Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of repeated uses and autoclaving in the instrumented area, fracture resistance, and time of instrumentation of thermally treated nickel-titanium reciprocating systems. Materials and Methods: Two hundred simulated canals were instrumented using Reciproc Blue and WaveOne Gold. Each file was used up to 10 times or until fracture. The instrumented area was measured in pre- and post-operative images, using ImageJ software. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis evaluated the number of uses of instruments before fracture. Instrumented area and time of instrumentation were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis. Correlations among the number of uses and instrumented area were measured. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Reciproc Blue presented a higher estimated number of uses in comparison with WaveOne Gold (p = 0.026), but autoclaving did not affect the resistance to fracture of instruments (p > 0.05). The instrumented area was different among the evaluated groups (p = 0.039), and the instrumented area along the uses of both tested instruments was reduced. With the time of instrumentation, there was also a significant difference among the evaluated groups; the groups without sterilization cycles were faster, in comparison to those submitted to autoclaving (p = 0.010). Conclusions: Reciproc Blue was more resistant than WaveOne Gold, suffering later fracture. Additionally, the sterilization cycles did not influence the estimated number of uses of thermally treated reciprocating instruments, but the instrumented area of root canals was reduced along with the repeated uses of both instruments.

A series of polymer semiconductors incorporating 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-5,6-dicarboxylicimide (BTZI) as strong electron-withdrawing unit and an alkoxy-functionalized head-to-head linkage containing bithiophene or bithiazole as highly electron-rich co-unit are designed and synthesized. Because of the strong intramolecular charge transfer characteristics, all three polymers BTZI-TRTOR (P1), BTZI-BTOR (P2), and BTZI-BTzOR (P3) exhibit narrow bandgaps of 1.13, 1.05, and 0.92 eV, respectively, resulting in a very broad absorption ranging from 350 to 1400 nm. The highly electron-deficient 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-5,6-dicarboxylicimide and alkoxy-functionalized bithiophene (or thiazole) lead to polymers with low-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (-3.96 to -4.28 eV) and high-lying highest occupied molecular orbitals (-5.01 to -5.20 eV). Hence, P1 and P3 show substantial and balanced ambipolar transport with electron mobilities/hole mobilities of up to 0.86/0.51 and 0.95/0.50 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively, and polymer P2 containing the strongest donor unit exhibited unipolar p-type performance with an average hole mobility of 0.40 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in top-gate/bottom-contact thin-film transistors with gold as the source and drain electrodes. When incorporated into bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells, the narrow bandgap (1.13 eV) polymer P1 shows an encouraging power conversion efficiency of 4.15% with a relatively large open-circuit voltage of 0.69 V, which corresponds to a remarkably small energy loss of 0.44 eV. The power conversion efficiency of P1 is among the highest reported to date with such a small energy loss in polymer:fullerene solar cells.

Nonlinear optimal control for reducing vibrations in civil structures using smart devices
Joaquin Contreras-Lopez,Fernando Ornelas-Tellez,Elisa Espinosa-Juarez 국제구조공학회 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.23 No.3
The frequently excessive vibrations presented in civil structures during seismic events or service conditions may result in users’ discomfort, or worst, in structures failure, producing economic and even human casualties. This work contributes in proposing the synthesis of a nonlinear optimal control strategy for semiactive structural control, with the main characteristic that the synthesis considers both the structure model and the semiactive actuator nonlinear dynamics, which produces a nonlinear system that requires a nonlinear controller design. The aim is to reduce the unwanted vibrations in the response of civil structures, by means of intelligent fluid semiactive actuator such as the Magnetorheological Damper (MRD), which is a device with a low level of power consumption. The civil structures for which the proposed control methodology can be applied are those admitting a state-dependent coefficient factorized representation model, such as buildings, bridges, among others. A scaled model of a three storey building is analyzed as a case study, whose dynamical response involves displacement, velocity and acceleration of each one of the storeys, subjected to the North-South component of the September 19th., 2017, Puebla-Morelos (7.1M), Mexico earthquake. The investigation rests on comparing the structural response over time for two different conditions: with no control device installed and with one MRD installed between the first floor and the ground, where a nonlinear optimal signal for the MRD input voltage is determined. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller for reducing the building's dynamical response.

Background The result of illicit polymer injection is chronic inflammation with foreign-body granuloma (FBG) formation. Treatment can be divided into medical and surgical. Some patients develop severe complications with need surgical treatment. This study aims to describe patients who underwent surgical removal of the FBGs and autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA); additionally, we evaluated the quality of life after surgery. Methods In this retrospective single-center study, the authors examined data of patients who underwent surgical removal of FBG caused by illicit polymer injection for cosmetic purposes and confirmed ASIA from 2015 to 2020 by three different surgical approaches. Descriptive summary statistics were reported on patient demographics, presenting symptoms and clinical examination features, treatment strategies, histopathology reports and quality of life. Results The cohort included 11 female patients with FBGs and ASIA. The most affected anatomical zones were the combination of gluteal region, thighs and legs (40%); and thighs with legs (20%). Main presentation was: skin hyperpigmentation (90.9%), skin induration (63.6%), chronic fatigue (63.6%), and ulcers (36.4%). Surgical modalities consisted of: ultrasonic-assisted liposuction in four patients (36.4%); open en bloc excision and primary closure in four patients (36.4%); and open en bloc excision and microsurgical reconstruction in three patients (27.2%). The postoperative quality of life visual analog scale score was 83.9. Conclusions ASIA treatment represents a challenge for the plastic surgeon. Adequate surgical treatment emphasizing, when possible, the total or near-total resection of the FBG must be performed to improve ASIA evolution.

Prebiotic effect of mucilage (MO) and pecticderived (PO) oligosaccharides from prickly pear cactus stems was assessed on both cultures and metabolic activity of microbial communities from the human colon. The MO treatment enhanced lactobacilli growth up to 23.8%, while PO increased the bifidobacteria population by 25%. Furthermore, the addition of MO produced a slight decrease in enterococci, enterobacteria, staphylococci, and clostridia of about 4%. Increased levels of the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were attained in the cultures at rates of 35 and 16% in response to MO and PO treatments, respectively. Propionic acid (propionate) and butanoic acid (butyrate) production increased at least 50% throughout MO and PO treatments. A decrease in the ammonium level of 11.5% was produced by MO treatment. This research indicates that a mixture of MO and PO oligosaccharides from nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) could act as prebiotic.

The degradation of solutions with paracetamol and diclofenac has been studied by electro-oxidation(EOx), in a reactor with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and a stainless steel cathode. Differentcurrent densities were applying: 1.56 to 6.25 mA/cm2. Close to 50% of mineralization is always achieveddue to the great concentration of OH generated at the BDD surface under EOx, with release of NH4+ andNO3ions. Same solutions have been comparatively treated with electro-Fenton (EF/BDD) process, improved the mineralization reached 80% of efficiency. Reversed-phase chromatography was carryingout to identify some by products that evolve under de degradation process.
