        Distribution of Fluorescent Whitening Agents as an Indicator of Domestic Wastewater

        The distributions of fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) in the water of the Yasu River and their tributaries flowing into Lake Biwa (Japan) were surveyed on winter and summer. The FWA fluxes had linear correlation with the corrected resident population in catchments of the tributaries of Yasu River. Therefore, the FWAs in the rivers come from domestic wastewater, and those fluxes in the tributaries depended on the human population of their catchments. As an application of the FWA indicating domestic wastewater, we could assess seasonal changes in the sources of dissolved organic matter in the tributaries.

        Effects of Intramuscular Fat on the Sensory Characteristics of M. longissimus dorsi in Japanese Black Steers as Judged by a Trained Analytical Panel

        The effects of intramuscular fat on the sensory characteristics of M. longissimus dorsi in Japanese Black steers were investigated by a trained analytical panel (average 13.4 panelists). Five sets (10 head) of artificial identical twins were divided into 2 groups, high level of intramuscular fat group (HG) which utilized the fattening method of increasing intramuscular fat and low level of intramuscular fat group (LG) which did not use the above method. Regarding M. longissmus dorsi which was produced for use in the sensory evaluation, crude fat contents of HG and LG was 25.8% and 23.2% respectively (p<0.05). Warner-Bratzler shear force, water holding capacity, cooking loss and fatty acid composition of HG and LG were similar between the two groups. M. Longissimus dorsi taken from HG and LG were tested for their sensory characteristics by a trained panel. HG was given higher points for juiciness than LG (p<0.05). There were no significant differences for tenderness and flavor between the two groups. Overall acceptability which synthesized each of the sensory characteristics of HG and LG were 5.04 and 4.69 points respectively (p = 0.05). These results suggested that juiciness increased with the increase of intramuscular fat, and this raised the overall acceptability of M. longissimus dorsi.

        2011年5月、山本作兵衛の炭鉱記録画がユネスコ世界記憶遺産に、2015年7月には、三池炭鉱を含む8県11市にまたがる23の構成資産が、同一の歴史的背景を持つシリアルㆍノミネーションとしてユネスコ世界文化遺産となる。かつて燃料資源産出の場だった炭鉱は、現在観光資源として別の一面を見せるが、このような動向の背景には、炭鉱を「負の遺産」として抱えてきた現住民の訴えがある。現在の炭鉱の物語が、日本の輝かしい歴史を証言するものとして意味付けられていることに留意し、アントニオㆍグラムシとガヤトリㆍチャクラヴォルティㆍスピヴァクの理論を援用しつつ炭鉱労働を表象するということ自体を再検討する。 炭鉱労働とは、明治期の産業革命期には、国家の近代化を支えるものとして強制的支配と服従のイデオロギーの下で、また炭鉱労働の問題を提起するプロレタリア文学によっては、革命へ向かうための指導と同意のイデオロギーの下で語られる。複合的なイデオロギーに従属する炭鉱労働者をサバルタンとして捉え直し、炭鉱労働を表象することの困難さの素因を明らかにした。また、文学テクストから拾い上げられる表象から、炭鉱労働の歴史を語るための方策を考察した。 In May 2011, Sakubei Yamamoto’s documentary picture of coal mines was registered as a memory of the world by UNESCO. During the era of Meiji Industrial Revolution, work in coal mines was represented as a basis for modernizing the country under the forcible controls and the ideology of submission. In the proletarian literature which raises the problems of coal labors, by contrast, it was narrated under the ideology synonymous with the guidance for a revolution. We propose to view the mine workers who submitted to complex ideologies as subalterns, and reveal the causes of difficulty in representing coal labors. We also explore the means of narrating coal labors based on representations lurking in literary texts.

In July 2015, 23 composing properties including Miike Coal Mines, which are located over 8 prefectures (comprising 11 cities), were registered as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO, a case of a “serial nomination” with the same historical background. These coal mines, which used to serve as a place for producing fuel sources, are now a place for tourism. This shift reflects the local people’s conception of the coal mines as “negative legacy.” In this article, we note that the narrative of contemporary coal mines is regarded as a testament of Japan’s glory history, and revisit the issue of representing coal labors within the theory developed by Antonio Gramsci and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.         Gastric Adenocarcinoma of Fundic Gland Type with Aggressive Transformation and Lymph Node Metastasis: a Case Report

        A 55-year-old man visited our hospital for a detailed examination of a gastric submucosal tumor that was first detected 10 years prior. The tumor continued to grow and had developed a depressed area in its center. A histopathological examination of biopsy specimens revealed gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (GA-FG). It was diagnosed as T2 based on the invasion depth as determined by white-light endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography. A total gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy was performed and a GA-FG in the mucosa and submucosa was confirmed histopathologically. However, there was a gradual transition to an infiltrative tubular adenocarcinoma with poorly differentiated components in the muscular and subserosal layers. Metastasis was identified in a dissected lymph node (LN). This is the first report of a GA-FG progressing to an aggressive cancer with LN metastasis. These findings modify our understanding of the pathophysiology of GA-FG.

        일본의 가금산업 -역사와 현실-

        Chicken has been one of the most useful animals for life. They have been not only one of the most economical and adundant sources of valuable nutrients, but also the very good experimental animal to develop modern sciences. In Japan, eggs laid by the chickens have long been good sources of cash income for farmers and in many cases even for Samurais. Although nearly 50 millions of chickens were raised and they were of considerable importance in Japanese agricultre before the World War II, the industrialization or specializatin started after the War, Substantiallysince the 1960s. Among other spcies of poultry then chickens, ducks and Japanese quails are of some importane in Japan. Duck meat is often used in various cuisines at higher class restaurants and Japanese quail eggs are widely used. Hower those those species of commpared with chickens.

      • Changes in Hemolymph Vitellogenin and Ecdysteroid Levels during the Reproductive and Non-Reproductive Molt Cycles in the Freshwater Prawn Macrobrachium nipponense

        Hemolymph vitellogenin and ecdysteroid levels were traced during the reproductive and non-reproductive molt cycles in adult females of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium nipponense, in which the reproductive development coincides with the molt cycle. During the reproductive molt cycle, vitellogenin levels began to increase at stage B. High levels were maintained during stages C₁-D₃ in concomitance with ovarian growth, and these levels decreased following the prespawning ecdysis. Vitellogenin was at undetectable levels during the non-reproductive molt cycle, and correspondingly, ovarian maturation did not advance. The predominant ecdysteroids in the hemolymph of M. nipponense were determined by HPLC-RIA analysis as 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and immunoreactive high polarity products(HPP). 20E and HPP levels peaked at stage D₃ during both molt cycles. 20E levels declined rapidly to low levels after ecdysis in the reproductive molt cycle. On the other hand, 20E levels decreased slowly during stages A-C₁in the non-reproductive molt cycle. HPP levels immediately declined prior to spawning at stage A_0 and showed a small peak after spawning at stage A₁in the reproductive molt cycle, whereas in the non-reproductive molt cycle levels were still high at stage A and declined slowly during stages B-C₁. These differences in ecdysteroid levels suggest a possible relationship between ecdysteriod levels and vitellogenesis.

        Recent Advances in the Relationship between Endocrine Status and Nutrition in Chickens - Review -

        A large number of investigations have shown that changes in nutritional condition affect endocrine status in avian species. Herein, recent findings including novel peptides discovered by the development of the techniques in the field of molecular biology have been reviewed. The insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) found in chickens have been characterized and shown to be 70 and 66 amino acid polypeptides, respectively. Plasma IGF-I level is very responsive to nutrition, Le. varying dietary proteins and energy intakes, and food restriction. Plasma IGF-II concentration is altered by nutritional deprivation to a much smaller extent than plasma IGF-I concentration. Almost all of the serum and tissue IGFs are found in a complex composed of IGF and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP). In the chicken plasma, the major IGFBP differs from that in mammalian plasma. The proglucagon mRNA encodes glucagon and two glucagon-like peptides (GLP-I and GLP-2). The intracerebroventricular administration of GLP-l strongly decreased food intake of chicks, and it was indicated that the inhibition of food intake by GLP-l was associated with neuropeptide Y, which is one of the neurotransmitters reported to enhance food intake.
