      • Evolution of asexual and sexual reproduction in the aspergilli

        Ojeda-Ló,pez, M.,Chen, W.,Eagle, C.E.,Gutié,rrez, G.,Jia, W.L.,Swilaiman, S.S.,Huang, Z.,Park, H.-S.,Yu, J.-H.,,novas, D.,Dyer, P.S. CBS Fungal Biodiversity Centre 2018 Studies in mycology Vol.91 No.-

<P><I>Aspergillus nidulans</I> has long-been used as a model organism to gain insights into the genetic basis of asexual and sexual developmental processes both in other members of the genus <I>Aspergillus</I>, and filamentous fungi in general. Paradigms have been established concerning the regulatory mechanisms of conidial development. However, recent studies have shown considerable genome divergence in the fungal kingdom, questioning the general applicability of findings from <I>Aspergillus</I>, and certain longstanding evolutionary theories have been questioned. The phylogenetic distribution of key regulatory elements of asexual reproduction in <I>A. nidulans</I> was investigated in a broad taxonomic range of fungi. This revealed that some proteins were well conserved in the <I>Pezizomycotina</I> (<I>e.g.</I> AbaA, FlbA, FluG, NsdD, MedA, and some velvet proteins), suggesting similar developmental roles. However, other elements (<I>e.g.</I> BrlA) had a more restricted distribution solely in the <I>Eurotiomycetes</I>, and it appears that the genetic control of sporulation seems to be more complex in the aspergilli than in some other taxonomic groups of the <I>Pezizomycotina</I>. The evolution of the velvet protein family is discussed based on the history of expansion and contraction events in the early divergent fungi. Heterologous expression of the <I>A. nidulans abaA</I> gene in <I>Monascus ruber</I> failed to induce development of complete conidiophores as seen in the aspergilli, but did result in increased conidial production. The absence of many components of the asexual developmental pathway from members of the <I>Saccharomycotina</I> supports the hypothesis that differences in the complexity of their spore formation is due in part to the increased diversity of the sporulation machinery evident in the <I>Pezizomycotina</I>. Investigations were also made into the evolution of sex and sexuality in the aspergilli. <I>MAT</I> loci were identified from the heterothallic <I>Aspergillus</I> (<I>Emericella</I>) <I>heterothallicus</I> and <I>Aspergillus</I> (<I>Neosartorya</I>) <I>fennelliae</I> and the homothallic <I>Aspergillus pseudoglaucus</I> (=<I>Eurotium repens</I>). A consistent architecture of the <I>MAT</I> locus was seen in these and other heterothallic aspergilli whereas much variation was seen in the arrangement of <I>MAT</I> loci in homothallic aspergilli. This suggested that it is most likely that the common ancestor of the aspergilli exhibited a heterothallic breeding system. Finally, the supposed prevalence of asexuality in the aspergilli was examined. Investigations were made using <I>A. clavatus</I> as a representative ‘asexual’ species. It was possible to induce a sexual cycle in <I>A. clavatus</I> given the correct <I>MAT1-1</I> and <I>MAT1-2</I> partners and environmental conditions, with recombination confirmed utilising molecular markers. This indicated that sexual reproduction might be possible in many supposedly asexual aspergilli and beyond, providing general insights into the nature of asexuality in fungi.</P>

      • Power Spectra and Spectral Signatures of Natural Images Under Varying Light Illuminations

        Juan Ojeda,Juan Luis Nieves,Javier Romero 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

Although the power spectra of natural images has been extensively analyzed and studied, the influence of daylight in modeling other second order image statistics is not fully understood and has deserved little attention. The power spectra of natural images decreases as a function of frequency and it is well known that, on a log-log scale, amplitude as function of frequency lies on a straight lines. The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of daylight changes in the power spectra and signatures derived from 600 color images, which were rendered under 108 natural illuminants with Correlated Color Temperatures (CCT) from 2,735K to 25,889K. Our results suggest that the power spectra analyzed in terms of L*, a*, and b* components shows different behaviors. It seems that luminance information do not depend on the CCT as opposed to the analysis along chromatic a* and b* image components showing differences for different daylights. The spectral slope analysis of the corresponding power law shows local minima around 5,800K in the oblique orientation and are almost constant above 12,000K for all the orientations. The spectral signatures for the color Blue-Yellow and Red-Green components also show different areas and contours across daylights, being significant for the former. A reduction of the area that encloses power spectrum greater than 60% of its maximum value are found again around a CCT of 5,500K for the chromatic channels, with higher presence of vertical and horizontal frequencies in the b* component for that CCT.

Left Common Femoral to Right Common Iliac Venous Bypass Through a Retroperitoneal Exposure

        Cesar Cuen-Ojeda,Luis O Bobadilla-Rosado,Ramon Garcia-Alva,Luis H. Arzola,Javier E. Anaya-Ayala,Carlos A. Hinojosa 대한혈관외과학회 2018 Vascular Specialist International Vol.34 No.4

The endovascular recanalization of the iliocaval system has replaced venous surgical reconstructions as the primary treatment option in severe post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). We herein present a 51-year-old female with previous deep venous thrombosis, complicated with PTS with a large and complex circumferential calf ulcer measuring 25 cm of length in the left lower extremity. Venogram revealed a complete and extensive occlusion in the left iliofemoral system. A surgical bypass from the left common femoral vein to the right common iliac vein was performed. Patient recovered well and after 12 months postoperation her large wound is healing favorably with a clean and well granulated bed. Iliofemoral venous bypass is a feasible treatment for non-healing ulcer of lower extremity.

Preferences of ICT among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis: An Ecuadorian Cross-Sectional Study

        Ivan Cherrez-Ojeda,Miguel Felix,Valeria L. Mata,Emanuel Vanegas,Antonio W. D. Gavilanes,Peter Chedraui,Daniel Simancas-Racines,Juan Carlos Calderon,Fabian Ortiz,Guillermina Blum,Angela Plua,Gino Gonza 대한의료정보학회 2018 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.24 No.4

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the frequency of use, and preferences regarding information and communication technologies (ICTs) among Ecuadorian patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: We conducted an anonymous cross-sectional survey-based study from January 2016 to April 2017, involving 393 patients with end-stage renal disease from 9 hemodialysis centers, in which they rated their use and preferences of various ICTs through a modified version of the Michigan Questionnaire. The questionnaire collected information regarding demographics, patients’ interest in obtaining health-related information through ICTs, and interest in using ICTs as a potential way to communicate with their healthcare providers. A chi-square test for association and adjusted regression analyses were performed. Results: Among all patients who participated, 64.3% reported owning a cellphone, with less than a third reporting active Internet connection. The most used ICT for obtaining information about CKD and/or hemodialysis was web-based Internet, followed by YouTube. SMS was rated the highest to receive and seek health-related information, followed by Facebook. Younger age and higher levels of education were associated with a higher overall usage of ICTs. Finally, more than half of the patients reported interest in using WhatsApp for communicating with their healthcare providers. Conclusions: Understanding the preferences of ICTs among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis could help to improve their outcomes through the potential uses and benefits of ICTs. Further research is needed to assess their role in improving the care of patients with chronic diseases.

An extension of the discrete Lindley distribution with applications

        E. Calderín-Ojeda,E. Gómez-Déniz 한국통계학회 2013 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.42 No.3

An extension of the discrete Lindley distribution is obtained by discretizing the continuous failure rate model in the generalized continuous distribution in Zakerzadeh and Dolati [Zakerzadeh, Y., & Dolati, A. (2009). Generalized Lindley distribution. Journal of Mathematical Extension, 3(2), 13–25]. The result is a generalization of the geometric distribution which presents high versatility since covariates can be included in the model.

Percutaneous Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair with INCRAFT Endograft Guided by CO2 Digital Subtraction Angiography in Patients with Renal Insufficiency

        Cesar Cuen-Ojeda,Javier E. Anaya-Ayala,Rene Lizola,Julio A. Navarro-Iniguez,Lizeth Luna,Manuel Guerrero-Hernandez,Carlos A. Hinojosa 대한혈관외과학회 2020 Vascular Specialist International Vol.36 No.1

Iodinated contrast is the most common contrast agent used during endovascular abdominal aneurysm repair (EVAR). However, its use may worsen kidney function in patients with renal insufficiency. Previous studies have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of carbon dioxide (CO2)-EVAR. Here, we report cases of three male patients with mild renal insufficiency (mean age: 79 years) that successfully underwent CO2-EVAR using INCRAFT ultra-low profile endografts. CO2 angiography provided the necessary vascular roadmap for safe and effective percutaneous EVAR, eliminating the need for iodinated contrast media and preventing contrastinduced nephropathy.

A New Mixture Criterion for the Improvement of the Compressive Strength of Adobe Using Zeolite as Stabilizer

Rosa Angélica Lara-Ojeda,Juana María Miranda-Vidales,Lilia Narváez-Hernández,Juan Manuel Lozano de Poo 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.26 No.8

The use of zeolite as a stabilizer for adobe has proven to have the ability to improve its physical and chemical properties. This is shown in the positive results in terms of strength gain and water absorption resistance in adobe blocks. In this work, an investigation was carried out to evaluate the use of zeolite as adobe stabilizer. The adobes were made with two different types of soil with different content of zeolite (5, 10, 15, 20% by weight) maintaining the zeolite-lime ratio 1:1. The samples were tested on compressive strength and water absorption. The deterioration of the adobes was analyzed under conditions of extreme humidity. The results of this study revealed that adobe behavior is influenced by the synergistic relationship between soil, zeolite and lime, showing significant changes in compressive strength even under extreme humidity conditions. It was also observed that the chemical composition of the soil influenced the development of the pozzolanic reaction. The stabilization of adobes with 15% of zeolite showed the best mechanical behavior, before and after deterioration assay. Hence, zeolite promises to be a good alternative as a stabilizer in adobe construction systems.

Integrating Y-Chromosome, Mitochondrial, and Autosomal Data to Analyze the Origin of Pig Breeds

        Ramirez, O.,Ojeda, A.,Tomas, A.,Gallardo, D.,Huang, L.S.,Folch, J.M.,Clop, A.,Sanchez, A.,Badaoui, B.,Hanotte, O.,Galman-Omitogun, O.,Makuza, S.M.,Soto, H.,Cadillo, J.,Kelly, L.,Cho, I.C.,Yeghoyan, S. Oxford University Press 2009 Molecular biology and evolution Vol.26 No.9

<P>We have investigated the origin of swine breeds through the joint analysis of mitochondrial, microsatellite, and Y-chromosome polymorphisms in a sample of pigs and wild boars with a worldwide distribution. Genetic differentiation between pigs and wild boars was remarkably weak, likely as a consequence of a sustained gene flow between both populations. The analysis of nuclear markers evidenced the existence of a close genetic relationship between Near Eastern and European wild boars making it difficult to infer their relative contributions to the gene pool of modern European breeds. Moreover, we have shown that European and Far Eastern pig populations have contributed maternal and paternal lineages to the foundation of African and South American breeds. Although West African pigs from Nigeria and Benin exclusively harbored European alleles, Far Eastern and European genetic signatures of similar intensity were detected in swine breeds from Eastern Africa. This region seems to have been a major point of entry of livestock species in the African continent as a result of the Indian Ocean trade. Finally, South American creole breeds had essentially a European ancestry although Asian Y-chromosome and mitochondrial haplotypes were found in a few Nicaraguan pigs. The existence of Spanish and Portuguese commercial routes linking Asia with America might have favored the introduction of Far Eastern breeds into this continent.</P>
