Durability design and quality assurance of major concrete infrastructure
Gjorv, Odd E. Techno-Press 2013 Advances in concrete construction Vol.1 No.1
Upon completion of new concrete structures, the achieved construction quality always shows a high scatter and variability, and in severe environments, any weaknesses and deficiencies will soon be revealed whatever durability specifications and materials have been applied. To a certain extent, a probability approach to the durability design can take the high scatter and variability into account. However, numerical solutions alone are not sufficient to ensure the durability and service life of concrete structures in severe environments. In the present paper, the basis for a probability-based durability design is briefly outlined and discussed. As a result, some performance-based durability requirements are specified which are used for quality control and quality assurance during concrete construction. The final documentation of achieved construction quality and compliance with the specified durability are key to any rational approach to more controlled and increased durability. As part of the durability design, a service manual for future condition assessment and preventive maintenance of the structure is also produced. It is such a service manual which helps provide the ultimate basis for achieving a more controlled durability and service life of the given concrete structure in the given environment.
Applications in Powder Compaction of Iron Powder - Influence of Tool Material on Tool Life
Sandberg Odd,Krona Andreas,Berg Sigurd,Kaad Flemming,Nord Goran 한국분말야금학회 2006 한국분말야금학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2006 No.1
A high nitrogen PM tool steel has shown to have an excellent galling resistance due to the introduction of a high amount of a low friction phase predominantly consisting of VN. Tool making and heat treatment are according to standard procedures. An increase of tool life of more than two times compared to ordinary tool steels is found. Furthermore, the new low friction tool steel shows a potential for sintered parts with higher densities through the applica bility of increased compaction pressure or minimized lubricant amount.

This paper presents some of the efforts by the authors towards numerical prediction of springing of ships. A time-domain Higher Order Boundary Element Method (HOBEM) based on cubic shape function is first presented to solve a complete second-order problem in terms of wave steepness and ship motions in a consistent manner. In order to avoid high order derivatives on the body surfaces, e.g. mj-terms, a new formulation of the Boundary Value Problem in a body-fixed coordinate system has been proposed instead of traditional formulation in inertial coordinate system. The local steady flow effects on the unsteady waves are taken into account. Double-body flow is used as the basis flow which is an appropriate approximation for ships with moderate forward speed. This numerical model was used to estimate the complete second order wave excitation of springing of a displacement ship at constant forward speeds.
Theoretical Study of 1,4,6,9-Tetra chlorinated dibenzo-$\rho$-dioxin anion
Mhin, Byung-Jin,Odde, Srinivas,Han, Kang-Hyun,Lee, Jung-Eun,Choi, Won-Yong 배재대학교 자연과학연구소 2005 自然科學論文集 Vol.16 No.1
The equilibrium geometry, adiabatic electron affinity, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and infrared intensities of 1,4,6,9-Tetra chlorinated dibenzo-$\rho$-dioxin anion have been studied using B3LYP method. The local minimum conformation is found to be twisted form with $D_2$ symmetry. The predicted adiabatic electron affinity is 0.54 eV. The predicted inversion barrier between twisted and planar conformers was 0.9 kcal/mol, thus we expect that experimentally observed structure seems to be planar. the characteristic IR band of 1,4,6,9-TCDD anion appears at 1510 $cm^4$, which is a benzene ring skeleton vibration mode related with CaCb and C2C3 bond. this characteristic band could be sued for identication of 1,4,6,9-TCDD anion.
Hydrogen detachment of the hexahydrated hydroiodic acid upon attaching an excess electron
Lee, Han Myoung,Odde, Srinivas,Mhin, Byung Jin,Suh, Seung Bum,Kim, Kwang S. Taylor Francis 2007 Molecular physics Vol.105 No.19

A hydroiodic acid molecule is dissociated by more than four water molecules. Here, the effect of an excess electron on the hexahydated hydroiodic acid where the dissociated structure [H3O+(H2O)5I-] is much more stable than the undissociated one [(H2O)6HI], is investigated. Upon binding an excess electron (e-), the cluster releases a hydrogen radical and forms the stable hexahydrated iodide [(H2O)6I-] when the initial kinetic energy is above ∼200 K, due to the small transition barrier (∼0.5 eV). The system with the hydrogen radical released, [(H2O)6I- + H·], is much more stable than the systems with an excess electron, [(H3O)+{e-(H2O)5}I-] or [e-(H2O)2(H3O)+(H2O)3I-].

Effect of Structural Elasticity on Slamming Against Wetdecks of Multihull Vessels
Kvalsvold, Jan,Faltinsen, Odd M.,Aarsnes, Jan V. The Society of Naval Architects of Korea 1997 Journal of ship and ocean technology Vol.1 No.1
Hydroelastic slamming against the wetdeck of a multihull vessel is studied numerically and experimentally. The beam equations and a two-dimensional flow model are used to find the dynamic stresses in longitudinal stiffeners between two transverse stiffeners. The largest stresses in the structure occur in the time scale of the lowest wet natural period of the beam. A simple relation between the maximum stress, the local geometry and the impact velocity of the wetdeck is established. The stresses in the wetdeck are neither sensitive to the radius of curvature of the waves nor where the waves initially hit the wetdeck. It is concluded that the maximum impact pressure should not be used to find maximum bending stresses during wetdeck slamming.
