• Iterative LQR with Discrete Barrier States for Efficient Collision Avoidance of Autonomous Vehicle

        Minsu Cho,Yeongseok Lee,Kyung-Soo Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2022 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2022 No.11

Ensuring safe motion planning of autonomous vehicles, especially on collision avoidance in an emergency, is challenging. Many optimal control methods have been proposed for safe and efficient nonlinear motion planning. It is well known that iterative linear quadratic regulator (iLQR) is particularly suitable for nonlinear optimization. Although many methods have been developed to solve the inequality constrained differential dynamic programming (DDP), this paper proposes a method for efficient vehicle motion planning by using discrete barrier states to iLQR. In the proposed method, multiple inequality constraints such as obstacle avoidance and road boundaries are reflected in a single barrier state in the collision avoidance scenario and applied to the iLQR/DDP framework. For comparison, both the unconstrained iLQR using the potential field method and the barrier state iLQR proposed in this study were simulated in the collision avoidance scenario. We tested on a real-time software-in-the-loop simulation using CarMaker and ROS. Compared with the unconstrained iLQR, our proposed method generated a safe and efficient optimized trajectory for autonomous vehicles in emergency situations such as fishhook tests.

Training Strategy and sEMG Sensor Positioning for Finger Force Estimation at Various Elbow Angles

        Minsu Cho,Younggeol Cho,Kyung-Soo Kim 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2022 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.20 No.5

Recently, several simultaneous proportional control techniques using surface electromyography (sEMG) have been developed to control protheses. However, there is a gap between research and clinical applications. This gap is due to estimation error in interposition and sEMG sensor parameters. Many previous studies have shown that the estimation accuracy of the model decreases at the interposition. Several studies have also found that the number and placement of sEMG sensors affect the performance of the models. In this paper, we propose a training strategy and guidelines for positioning sEMG sensors to reduce this gap. In this study, the finger force estimation model was trained by combining training data from various elbow angles into one feature vector. This training protocol reduced the root mean square error (RMSE) by 12.40% and increased the interdependency ratio (IR) by 3.40% in interposition. We also used the correlation coefficient between the finger force and sEMG signal as an evaluation index to determine the optimal placement of the sEMG sensor. The models trained using the channels with high correlation coefficients achieved better estimation performance, and the number of channels was reduced to four. When the model was retrained with the proposed training protocol using these 4 channels, the RMSE decreased by 10.73% and the IR increased by 1.87% in interposition. We expect the training strategy to close the researchapplication gap by reducing the number of sensors, finding the optimal placement of the sensors, and reducing the estimated error in interposition.

      • Evaluating the effect of best practices for business process redesign: An evidence-based approach based on process mining techniques

        Cho, Minsu,Song, Minseok,Comuzzi, Marco,Yoo, Sooyoung Elsevier 2017 Decision Support Systems Vol.104 No.-

Abstract

The management of business processes in modern times is rapidly shifting towards being evidence-based. Business process evaluation indicators tend to focus on process performance only, neglecting the definition of indicators to evaluate other concerns of interest in different phases of the business process lifecycle. Moreover, they usually do not discuss specifically which data must be collected to calculate indicators and whether collecting these data is feasible or not. This paper proposes a business process assessment framework focused on the process redesign lifecycle phase and tightly coupled with process mining as an operational framework to calculate indicators. The framework includes process performance indicators and indicators to assess whether process redesign best practices have been applied and to what extent. Both sets of indicators can be calculated using standard process mining functionality. This, implicitly, also defines what data must be collected during process execution to enable their calculation. The framework is evaluated through case studies and a thorough comparison against other approaches in the literature.

Highlights

This paper presents a methodology to assess the effects accrued by BPR initiatives.

The methodology provides evaluation measures to identify implementation and assess improvements.

The methodology defines how evaluation measures are calculated using process mining.

A couple of case studies demonstrates the applicability of the proposed methodology.

      • Development of wearable dry sEMG sensor and selection of optimal location through anatomical consideration for the prosthetic hand

        Younggeol. Cho,Minsu. Cho,Yeungseok. Lee,Kyung-Soo Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2019 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2019 No.10

The aim of this study is to design a wearable sensor device and to optimize the position of the sensor attachment, which is one of the important factors for the prosthetic hand control based on the surface electromyography (sEMG). Through anatomical examination of the arm, the independence of the surface electromyogram acquired in each channel is increased and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also increased by signal processing. We introduce a study on the research trend and sensor position of the surface EMG-based prosthetic hand in Introduction. In body, the design and characteristics of the developed sensor are explained, and correlation analysis between each channel and finger force is performed by selecting the position of the sensor through anatomical examination of the arm. In conclusion, we use the correlation analysis result and find the optimal sensor location.

Effect of Cu surface treatment in graphene growth by chemical vapor deposition

        Cho, Seong-Yong,Kim, Minsu,Kim, Min-Sik,Lee, Min-Hyun,Kim, Ki-Bum North-Holland 2019 Materials letters Vol.236 No.-

Abstract

Cu foils with various initial roughness were prepared and graphene was grown on each Cu foil. Graphene nuclei density was highly related to the initial surface roughness of Cu foil. Smoothing was done on Cu foil and initial roughness was relieved during 3 h annealing, but Cu surface with high surface roughness and impurity atoms provides larger nuclei density for the graphene growth. Heteronuclei effect of size variations of impurity atoms on multilayer graphene formation was calculated. Electropolishing was carried out to suppress the heteronuclei effect and the nuclei formation on Cu surface as well. For electropolished Cu substrate, nuclei density of graphene was extremely low even without extended pre-annealing step.

Highlights

Graphene growth behavior was studied on Cu foils with various roughness.

Heteronuclei effect was calculated based on classical thermodynamics model.

Electropolishing suppressed graphene nuclei density significantly.

The Effects of Metalinguistic and Exemplar-based Written Corrective Feedback on English Verb Complementation Accuracy in Multimedia-based EFL Writing Instruction

( Minsu Kim ),( Young Woo Cho ) 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회 2016 Multimedia Assisted Language Learning Vol.19 No.2

This study compared metalinguistic and exemplar-based written corrective feedback (CF) for their effects on Korean university students’ grammatical accuracy improvement regarding English verb complementation errors. This study was conducted in a writing class where two types of multimedia components were used for writing instruction: mini-lessons based on PowerPoint slides and a movie. This study also investigated how learners perceived the CF they received. Fifty-two learners, divided into two groups (i.e., metalinguistic and exemplar), participated in this class for 10 weeks. A sentence completion test and a narrative writing test were administered to measure learners’ verb complementation knowledge before and after the treatment. In the treatment sessions, learners were given a mini-lesson on English verb complementation using PowerPoint slides, watched part of a Korean movie, and then wrote a summary of the given movie part. Learners received either of the two types of CF on their written errors. This treatment procedure lasted for eight weeks. The results revealed that both feedback types were beneficial. Learners in both groups significantly improved their verb complementation knowledge. Though no significant difference between both groups was found, more learners preferred exemplar-based to metalinguistic CF.

      • Characteristics of early repolarization parameters and prognostic implications in the general ambulatory Korean population

        Cho, Min Soo,Kwon, Chang Hee,Nam, Gi-Byoung,Lee, Woo Seok,Hwang, Ki Won,Kim, Yong Giun,Choi, Hyung Oh,Kim, Sung-Hwan,Kim, Jeongsoon,Nam, Hyo-Jung,Min, Sun-Yang,Kim, Minsu,Lee, Ji Hyun,Hwang, You Mi,Jo Elsevier 2017 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY Vol.227 No.-

Abstract

Background

We tested a hypothesis that the 2 fundamental components of early repolarization (ER), J wave and ST elevation (STE) might have different prevalence and prognostic implications.

Methods

The study population comprised 26,345 general ambulatory Korean subjects (mean 48.0±10.2years old, 53.2% male) who underwent medical checkups from January 2002 to December 2002. ER was found in 2950 subjects (11.2%), who were divided into 3 groups (J [J wave only, n=1874, 7.1%], JST [both J wave and STE, n=489, 1.8%], and ST [STE only, n=587, 2.3%]).

Results

The prevalence of STE decreased with age, whereas J waves remained at a constant level in all age groups. The most common pattern of ER was the J pattern, with a horizontal/descending ST segment in the inferior leads; in lateral precordial leads, ST or JST patterns with ascending ST segments were more common. During the mean follow-up of 126.0±11.1months, a total of 710 subjects died (2.7%). Subjects in the J group were at higher risk (Hazard ratio 1.60, 95% confidence interval 1.27–2.01, p<0.001), while those in the JST and ST groups showed similar survival outcomes compared to controls without J waves or STE.

Conclusions

J waves and STE showed different age and lead distributions and prognostic implications. The presence of the J wave itself was associated with a higher relative risk of mortality. However, due to the low event rate, its clinical significance appears to be limited.
