Delta-catenin was first identified because of its interaction with presenilin-1, and its aberrant expression has been reported in various human tumors and in patients with Cri-du-Chat syndrome, a form of mental retardation. However, the mechanism whereby delta-catenin is regulated in cells has not been fully elucidated. We investigated the possibility that glycogen-synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) phosphorylates delta-catenin and thus affects its stability. Initially, we found that the level of delta-catenin was greater and the half-life of delta-catenin was longer in GSK-3beta(-/-) fibroblasts than those in GSK-3beta(+/+) fibroblasts. Furthermore, four different approaches designed to specifically inhibit GSK-3 activity, i.e. GSK-3-specific chemical inhibitors, Wnt-3a conditioned media, small interfering RNAs, and GSK-3alpha and -3beta kinase dead constructs, consistently showed that the levels of endogenous delta-catenin in CWR22Rv-1 prostate carcinoma cells and primary cortical neurons were increased by inhibiting GSK-3 activity. In addition, it was found that both GSK-3alpha and -3beta interact with and phosphorylate delta-catenin. The phosphorylation of DeltaC207-delta-catenin (lacking 207 C-terminal residues) and T1078A delta-catenin by GSK-3 was noticeably reduced compared with that of wild type delta-catenin, and the data from liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analyses suggest that the Thr(1078) residue of delta-catenin is one of the GSK-3 phosphorylation sites. Treatment with MG132 or ALLN, specific inhibitors of proteosome-dependent proteolysis, increased delta-catenin levels and caused an accumulation of ubiquitinated delta-catenin. It was also found that GSK-3 triggers the ubiquitination of delta-catenin. These results suggest that GSK-3 interacts with and phosphorylates delta-catenin and thereby negatively affects its stability by enabling its ubiquitination/proteosome-mediated proteolysis.

Designing Surface Chemistry of Silver Nanocrystals for Radio Frequency Circuit Applications
Oh, Hanju,Lee, Seung-Wook,Kim, Minsoo,Lee, Woo Seok,Seong, Mingi,Joh, Hyungmok,Allen, Mark G.,May, Gary S.,Bakir, Muhannad S.,Oh, Soong Ju American Chemical Society 2018 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.10 No.43

We introduce solution-based, room temperature- and atmospheric pressure-processed silver nanocrystal (Ag NC)-based electrical circuits and interconnects for radio frequency (RF)/microwave frequency applications. We chemically designed the surface and interface states of Ag NC thin films to achieve high stability, dc and ac conductivity, and minimized RF loss through stepwise ligand exchange, shell coating, and surface cleaning. The chemical and structural properties of the circuits and interconnects affect the high-frequency electrical performance of Ag NC thin films, as confirmed by high-frequency electromagnetic field simulations. An all solution-based process is developed to build coplanar structures, in which Ag NC thin films are positioned at both sides of the substrates. In addition, we fabricated flexible transmission lines and broadband electrical circuits for resistors, interdigitated capacitors, spiral and omega-shaped inductors, and patch antennas with maximum inductance and capacitance values of 3 nH and 2.5 pF at frequencies up to 20 GHz. We believe that our approach will lead to a cost-effective realization of RF circuits and devices in which sensing and wireless communication capabilities are combined for internet-of-things applications.
[FIG OMISSION]

Abstract

With a diffusion-assisted post-crosslinking method, polymer microspheres containing epoxy groups are crosslinked with ethylenediamine (EDA), gradually diffusing and reacting in the particles via amine/epoxy ring-opening reactions as confirmed by FT-IR and DSC results. Using a microcompression test, we find that the mechanical property (deformability under different applied force, breaking points, and recoverability) of the crosslinked microspheres is varied when different amounts of EDA are used in the system, resulting from different crosslinking density of the particles. An additional feature of the EDA treatment is to generate amine groups on the surface of the microspheres, enabling us to produce hybrid microspheres. We exploit them as immobilization sites for gold nanoparticles, forming gold-coated crosslinked microspheres. We also introduce a sequential functionalization method to fabricate crosslinked microspheres with selective functional groups on the surface. This approach can be a facile method to produce functional microspheres with controlled mechanical and surface properties.

Highlights

A synchronous crosslinking and amine-functionalization method for the polymer microsphere is introduced.

The method allows us to readily adjust the mechanical property of polymer particles.

Free amine functional groups on the surface of the microspheres can immobilize Au NPs.

A sequential functionalization method is introduced to selectively functionalize the surface and to crosslink the interior.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Oh, Min-Hee,Park, Ae-Hyun,Kim, MinSoo,Kim, Eun-A,Cho, Jin-Hyoung The Korean Association Of Orthodontists 2021 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.51 No.1
Objective: This study aimed to identify the perceptions of orthodontic treatment among Korean adults and determine the factors that drive them to seek orthodontic treatment. Methods: A total of 2,321 adults aged 19-64 years were surveyed using an internet research system from a specialized research company. The participants were divided into the following groups based on their experience of and willingness to undergo orthodontic treatment: experience, acceptance, and non-acceptance groups. The characteristics of the participants were compared using analysis of variance with post-hoc analysis. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed in all three models with the non-acceptance group as a reference. Results: In terms of demographic characteristics, age, gender, marital status, and education had significant influences on orthodontic treatment decisions in adults in the experience and acceptance groups (p < 0.001). When all the factors were analyzed, age, marital status, past dental treatment experience, regular oral examinations, demand for orthodontic treatment, optimal treatment period, health insurance coverage, information on orthodontic treatments, perceptions regarding orthodontic treatment, and psychosocial impact of dental esthetics significantly influenced orthodontic treatment decisions in adults in the experience and acceptance groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: These findings suggest that various factors influence orthodontic treatment decisions in adults. Individuals who seek orthodontic treatment were found to undergo more regular dental treatment and oral examination than those who did not. They also had a better perception of orthodontic treatment and more negative values for the psychosocial impact of dental esthetics.
Dissolution Rate of Solid Iron into Liquid Fe-C Alloy
Minsoo Shin,Joon Seok Oh,Jeoungho Lee,Sukkwang Jung,이준호 대한금속·재료학회 2014 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.20 No.6
Dissolution rate of solid iron into liquid Fe-C alloy was investigated using a sampling method at a fixedreaction area. The initial carbon concentration of the bulk liquid Fe-C alloy was set as 4.23, 3.29 and 2.17 wt%for the experiments at 1503, 1597, and 1688 K, respectively. The temperature dependence of the rate constantwas obtained as follows: ln k(m/s) = -3.47 - . The activation energy was estimated to be 74 kJ/mol. Adimensionless analysis was carried out separately to confirm the rate-determining step. The measured valuesshowed reasonable agreement with the calculated values from the dimensionless analysis. Therefore, it isconcluded that the mass transfer in the liquid boundary layer is the rate-determining step for the dissolution ofsolid iron in the liquid Fe-C alloy. The liquid boundary layer was estimated approximately 100 m, whichslightly decreased with increasing temperature. Present experimental results would be helpful to understandthe mechanism of liquid iron formation in the ironmaking and steelmaking processes as well as inthe reduction of iron-containing slags.
ANALYZING DNA CHIP DATA FOR CLUSTERING AND CLASSIFYING GENES
Minsoo Lee,Hyejung Yoon,Kyong Oh Yoon,Hye Yeon Choi,Dae Hyun Kim,Keun il Lee,Dae Young Kim 한국멀티미디어학회 2007 한국멀티미디어학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2007 No.-
Data mining techniques have been applied on massive amounts of various types of data. Typically large amounts of business data were the target for finding new meaningful trends or patterns. As the new field of biotechnology is emerging, new types of biological data in massive amounts are becoming available. These new types of data include DNA chip data, which are produced by scanning DNA chip experiment results. The DNA chip data can be processed and provided in a form that makes it possible to perform data mining operations such as clustering and classification. Clustering is an important process used for grouping together similar entities. Although there are many clustering algorithms available, we suggest an algorithm based on the ant colony system. In addition, we have developed a classification algorithm based on the ant colony system. We tested the algorithm with a test data of 100 to 1000 genes and 24 samples and show promising results for applying these algorithms to clustering and classifying biological data.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) disease is a condition in which the stomach contents return to the larynx and pharynx via the esophagus, causing mucosal injury. While conventional treatments, such as proton pump inhibitors, have limitations, acupuncture has been shown to reduce LPR symptoms. However, its effectiveness has not been systematically assessed. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating LPR. We review 10 electronic databases with a consistent search strategy, and 2 independent reviewers screened the articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study selected and analyzed 7 randomized controlled trials after the screening to assess primary outcomes, including reflux symptom index and reflux finding score, and secondary outcomes, including upper and lower esophageal sphincter pressure. The results revealed the statistically significant effectiveness of acupuncture in combination with conventional treatment in reducing LPR symptoms compared with conventional treatment alone. The most commonly used acupuncture points were CV22, ST36, and LR3. However, the meta-analysis demonstrated low reliability, as assessed using the GRADE Tool. Further research is needed to improve the evidence and draw clear conclusions regarding the clinical use of acupuncture for treating LPR.
