Reliability analysis and evaluation of LRFD resistance factors for CPT-based design of driven piles

There has been growing agreement that geotechnical reliability-based design (RBD) is necessary for establishing more advanced and integrated design system. In this study, resistance factors for LRFD pile design using CPT results were investigated for axially loaded driven piles. In order to address variability in design methodology, different CPT-based methods and load-settlement criteria, popular in practice, were selected and used for evaluation of resistance factors. A total of 32 data sets from 13 test sites were collected from the literature. In order to maintain the statistical consistency of the data sets, the characteristic pile load capacity was introduced in reliability analysis and evaluation of resistance factors. It was found that values of resistance factors considerably differ for different design methods, load-settlement criteria, and load capacity components. For the total resistance, resistance factors for LCPC method were higher than others, while those for Aoki-Velloso's and Philipponnat's methods were in similar ranges. In respect to load-settlement criteria, 0.1B and Chin's criteria produced higher resistance factors than DeBeer's and Davisson's criteria. Resistance factors for the base and shaft resistances were also presented and analyzed.

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Anticholinergics are a key element in treating neurogenic detrusor overactivity, but only limited data are available in the pediatric population, thus limiting the application to children even for oxybutynin chloride (OC), a prototype drug. This retrospective study was designed to provide data regarding the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of OC in the pediatric population (0-15 years old) with spinal dysraphism (SD).</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Records relevant to OC use for neurogenic bladder were gathered and scrutinized from four specialized clinics for pediatric urology. The primary efficacy outcomes were maximal cystometric capacity (MCC) and end filling pressure (EFP). Data on tolerability, compliance, and adverse events (AEs) were also analyzed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Of the 121 patient records analyzed, 41 patients (34%) received OC at less than 5 years of age. The range of prescribed doses varied from 3 to 24 mg/d. The median treatment duration was 19 months (range, 0.3-111 months). Significant improvement of both primary efficacy outcomes was noted following OC treatment. MCC increased about 8% even after adjustment for age-related increases in MCC. Likewise, mean EFP was reduced from 33 to 21 cm H<SUB>2</SUB>O. More than 80% of patients showed compliance above 70%, and approximately 50% of patients used OC for more than 1 year. No serious AEs were reported; constipation and facial flushing consisted of the major AEs.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>OC is safe and efficacious in treating pediatric neurogenic bladder associated with SD. The drug is also tolerable and the safety profile suggests that adjustment of dosage for age may not be strictly observed.</P>
Humidity responsive single-layered film fabricated by hydrophilic titanium oxide nanotubes

<P> We fabricated a humidity responsive film comprising a bundle of titanium oxide tubes, which changes its curvature corresponding to the relative humidity. The mechanism of changing the curvature of the film can be explained by adsorption, condensation, and evaporation of water molecules within the film. During adsorption, a liquid bridge is formed because of the growth of a water layer between tubes, thus contracting the tubes. When vapor pressure exceeds the equilibrium vapor pressure, condensation occurs at the meniscus of the liquid bridge, thus expanding the gap between tubes. We obtained the adsorption and desorption isotherms for the humidity responsive film by determining physical adsorption. Additionally, we demonstrated the varying motions of the humidity sensing film when a water droplet was applied on the surface. The sensor could distinguish between saturated and oversaturated humidity conditions, such as fog and rain, respectively, which is not possible using resistive humidity sensors. This humidity responsive film can be applied to environmental monitoring systems and possibly even to energy harvesting systems. </P>
고도화 기상자료 적용을 위한 격자기반 관개용수량 산정 모형 개발

적정 관개용수량의 산정은 농업 가뭄을 관리하는 데에 필수적인 요소이다. 본 연구는 논과 밭이 혼재하여 있는 농업 단지 내 관개 용수량 산정 시 격자 기반의 고도화 기상자료를 이용함으로써 적정한 관개 필요수량을 산정하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서 실시한 토양물수지 모델링의 경우 유효강우, 지표 및 지하 유출수, 작물 증발산량의 인자 간의 상호작용을 활용하였으며 관개 필요수량을 산정하는 데에는 논의 경우 일별 담수심법, 밭의 경우 유효 수분법을 활용하였다. 본 연구는 기존 관개 필요수량 산정 방법의 경우 거리에 상관없이 인근 기상청의 기상자료를 그대로 적용하는 부적절한 면에 대한 개선책을 포함한다. 즉, 격자 기반 기상자료의 적용을 통해 임의 필지에 대한 기상자료 적용의 적정성을 높이고 농업 필지의 격자 분할 해석으로 농업 단지 내 필요한 관개용수량 산정을 실시하였다. 경기도 용인시 내 밭토양 시험 지역에 대한 지점별 관개 용수량 산정결과 2004년부터 2013년 10년간 최대 300㎜ 최소 100㎜ 평균 190㎜의 관개 필요수량이 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 고도화 격자 기상자료를 이용한 격자별 관개필요수량 해석이 이뤄지며 이는 GIS(Graphic Information System)와의 연계적 활용으로 농업 단지내 전체 관개용수량 산정의 효율적과 적정성을 향상시킬 것으로 기대된다.
