Primary Limited Lumbar Discectomy with an annulus Closure Device: One-Year Clinical and Radiographic Results from a Prospective, Multi-Center Study

        Michiel B. Lequin,Martin Barth,Claudius Thomė,Gerrit J. Bouma 대한척추신경외과학회 2012 Neurospine Vol.9 No.4

Objective: Discectomy as a treatment for herniated lumbar discs results in outcomes after surgery that are not uniformly positive. Surgeons face the dilemma between limited nucleus removal which is associated with a higher risk of recurrence, or more aggressive nucleus removal which may lead to disc height loss and persistent back-pain. annulus closure devices may allow for the benefits of limited nucleus removal without the increased risk of recurrence. This is an interim report of an ongoing 24-month post-marketing study of the Barricaid® annulus closure device, consisting of a flexible polymer mesh that blocks the defect, held in place by a titanium bone anchor. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 45 patients at four hospitals, and implanted the Barricaid® after a limited discectomy. annulus defect size and volume of removed nucleus were recorded. Reherniations were reported, pain and function were monitored and imaging was performed at regular intervals during 24 months of follow-up. Results: At 12 months postsurgery, pain and function were significantly improved, comparing favorably to reported results from limited discectomy. Disc height has been well maintained. One reherniation has occurred (2.4%), which was associated with a misplaced device. No device fracture, subsidence or migration has been observed. Conclusion: The use of an annulus closure device may provide a reduction in reherniation rate for lumbar discectomy patients with large annulus defects who are at the greatest risk of recurrence. Using such a device should provide the surgeon increa- sed confidence in minimizing nucleus removal, which, in turn, may preserve disc height and biomechanics, reducing dege- neration and associated poor clinical outcomes in the long-term. A randomized multicenter study evaluating limited discectomy with and without the Barricaid® is currently underway, and will provide a higher level of evidence. • Templates of "Chineseness" and Trajectories of Cambodian Chinese Entrepreneurship in Phnom Penh

Michiel Verver 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2012 Cross-Currents Vol.- No.4

In the 1960s, William Willmott described Cambodia as a plural society in which different ethnic groups occupy different places in the economic structure. The Chinese made up the economic class, active in trade and commerce, and formed a definable ethnic community, both socioculturally and politically. Since Willmott’s seminal studies, Cambodia’s ethnic Chinese have endured the destruction and repression of both private enterprise and Chinese sociocultural life (1970–1990), followed by a revitalization of Chinese business. Through ethnographic case studies, this paper explores the relationship between “Chineseness” and business life in trajectories of Cambodian Chinese entrepreneurship in Phnom Penh. How do entrepreneurs deploy notions of Chinese business? The author argues that Chinese family businesses, trust-based networks, patronage arrangements, and cultural representations have indeed been greatly revitalized over the last few decades, but that they also remain challenged in certain contexts. Moreover, such revitalization has taken a fundamentally different form from Willmott’s description. Practices of Chinese business can no longer be ascribed to an ethnic Chinese “community” in Phnom Penh. Rather, as the latter has become increasingly multiform, Chinese business has developed into a template at the deployment (or neglect) of a broader category of Cambodian Chinese entrepreneurs.

Adapted Performance Measures and the Performance of Dutch Municipalities in Reducing Crime Rates

        Michiel S. de Vries,Christiaan J. Lako 연세대학교(미래캠퍼스) 빈곤문제국제개발연구원 2009 地域發展硏究 Vol.18 No.1

This article proposes to change performance measurement in such a way that it becomes possible to relate outcomes to the public policies involved, taking into account the complexity of the context. It involves a five step procedure, including quantitative and qualitative analysis. It is argued that this method can also be used as a search-light to detect best practices. This five step procedure is applied to the problem of crime rates in Dutch municipalities. The outcomes suggest that just looking at crime rates as such can distort conclusions about the effectiveness of municipalities. The remarkable finding for the Netherlands is that among those cities experiencing high crime rates there are nevertheless also cities having exemplary policies to combat crime.

TOWARDS UNIQUENESS OF MPR, THE MAIYENUTO-POITIER-REUTENAUER HOOF ALGEBRA OF PERMUTATIONS

        Michiel Hazewinkel 호남수학회 2007 호남수학학술지 Vol.29 No.2

A very important Hopf algebra is the graded Hopf algebra Symm of symmetric functions. It can be characterized as the unique graded positive selfdual Hopf algebra with orthonormal graded distinguished basis and just one primitive element from the distinguished basis. This result is due to Andrei Zelevinsky. A noncommutative graded Hopf algebra of this type cannot exist. But there is a most important positive graded Hopf algebra with distinguished basis that is noncommutative and that is twisted selfdual, the Malvenuto-Poirier-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Thus the question arises whether there is a corresponding uniqueness theorem for MPR. This prepreprint records initial investigations in this direction and proves that uniquenees holds up to and including the degree 4 which has rank 24.

On geography’s skewed transnationalization, anglophone hegemony, and qualified optimism toward an engaged pluralist future; A reply to Hassink, Gong and Marques

Michiel van Meeteren 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2019 도시과학국제저널 Vol.23 No.2

This reply to Hassink, Gong and Marques’ ‘Moving beyond Anglo-American economic geography’ raises several issues relevant to formulating a unified paradigm that escapes Anglo-American bias. First, the reply identifies different meanings of Anglo-American dominance that do not necessarily align. Remedying concerns that engage with the problems of anglophone hegemony do not necessarily solve institutional issues of Anglo-American dominance, exclusions of contributors, places and viewpoints, or postcolonial critiques. Second, the essay investigates the origins of anglophone dominance, how the skewed transnationalization of geographical practice came about, to excavate solutions from geography’s past. Based on these assessments, several epistemological issues are brought up that might hamper development of a unified paradigm. The reply concludes with encouragement to engage in the Sisyphean labour associated with the quest toward a unified paradigm for economic geography.
