This paper presents an improvement in the thermal performance of universal motor, which improves the efficiency and increases the life of the motor. Excessive heating in the winding can lead to an insulation failure of a universal motor and reduce the life of a food mixer. Hence, to avoid hot spots in machine parts and obtain a homogenous temperature distribution, it is necessary to take the thermal limits into consideration. To monitor temperature increase, a lumped parameter thermal model is designed with 12 nodes for a food mixer driven by a universal motor. This paper proposes a reduced-order thermal model for a universal motor used in food mixers to monitor its thermal behavior. In this paper, a 12th-order model is reduced to a 5th-order model using a balanced truncation reduction method. The reduced-order model is validated through simulation and experimental results by comparing its response with a full-order model. A thermal analysis is carried out using AC and DC supplies along with experimentation. It can be seen that when the universal motor is operated with a DC supply, its thermal performance is improved, which increases the life of the machine. This results in energy savings, since the efficiency of the universal motor is increased when it is operated using the DC supply.
Sexuality Education in Singapore Primary Schools
Mercy Karuniah Jesuvadian 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2017 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2017 No.1
This paper examines the sexuality education approach and materials that are currently in use for P5- P6 (ages 11-12) children attending Singapore’s public schools. The paper adopts document analysis as its main methodology and examines the Framework on Sexuality Education and the Growing Years Series created by the Ministry of Education (MOE). It was found that the content design and materials were secular in nature and were age appropriate. However, contrary to what MOE documents note, the curriculum was not comprehensive. Instead, it was centered on abstinence as key and focused more on prevention, i.e. unwanted pregnancies and STDs. It also advocated family as the key support and place of intervention. The pedagogy suggested by the analysis of the in class materials and lesson plans also seem more teacher centered than child centered. The paper provides some recommendations on how the sexuality education curriculum can be less prescriptive and more child centered in order to enable greater engagement with the material.

Mercy, J. Rejula,Stephen, S. Elizabeth Amudhini,Edna, K. Rebecca Jebaseeli Techno-Press 2022 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.11 No.3
Non-Traditional Optimization methods are successfully used in solving many engineering problems. Shaft is one of important element of machines and it is used to transmit power from a machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power. In this paper, ten non-traditional optimization methods that are ALO, GWO, DA, FPA, FA, WOA, CSO, PSO, BA and GSA are used to find minimum weight of hollow shaft to get global optimal solution. The problem has two design variables and two inequality constraints. The comparative results show that the Particle Swarm Optimization outperforms other methods and the results are validated using ANSYS.

Purpose This study aimed to detect relationships between undergraduate students’ attitudes toward communication skills learning and demographic variables (such as age, academic year, and gender). Understanding these relationships could provide information for communication skills facilitators and curriculum planners on structuring course delivery and integrating communication skills training into the medical curriculum. Methods The descriptive study involved a survey of 369 undergraduate students from 2 medical schools in Zambia who participated in communication skills training stratified by academic year using the Communication Skills Attitude Scale. Data were collected between October and December 2021 and analyzed using IBM SPSS for Windows version 28.0. Results One-way analysis of variance revealed a significant difference in attitude between at least 5 academic years. There was a significant difference in attitudes between the 2nd and 5th academic years (t=5.95, P˂0.001). No significant difference in attitudes existed among the academic years on the negative subscale; the 2nd and 3rd (t=3.82, P=0.004), 4th (t=3.61, P=0.011), 5th (t=8.36, P˂0.001), and 6th (t=4.20, P=0.001) academic years showed significant differences on the positive subscale. Age showed no correlation with attitudes. There was a more favorable attitude to learning communication skills among the women participants than among the men participants (P=0.006). Conclusion Despite positive general attitudes toward learning communication skills, the difference in attitude between the genders, academic years 2 and 5, and the subsequent classes suggest a re-evaluation of the curriculum and teaching methods to facilitate appropriate course structure according to the academic years and a learning process that addressees gender differences.
Acoustically-enhanced particle dispersion in polystyrene/alumina nanocomposites
Philip, Mercy A.,Natarajan, Upendra,Nagarajan, Ramamurthy Techno-Press 2014 Advances in nano research Vol.2 No.2
Polymer nanocomposites are advanced nanomaterials which exhibit dramatic improvements in various mechanical, thermal and barrier properties as compared with the neat polymer. Polystyrene/ alumina nanocomposites were prepared by an ultrasound-assisted solution casting method at filler loadings ranging from 0.2 to 2% and also at different ultrasonic frequencies, viz. 58 kHz, 192/58 kHz, 430 kHz, 470 kHz and 1 MHz. The composites were subjected to mechanical property tests (tensile and impact tests) and cavitation erosion tests to study the enhancement in functional properties. Filler dispersion in the polymer matrix was observed by SEM analysis. The effect of frequency on filler dispersion in the matrix was studied by SEM analysis and functional property enhancement of the composite material. The composites prepared at dual (high/ low) frequency (192/58 kHz) were found to show better property enhancement at low filler loadings as compared with neat polymer and also with composites prepared without ultrasound, thus reinforcing the finding that ultrasound-assisted synthesis is a promising method for the synthesis of nanocomposites.

Vitamin E, phytosterol, and phospholipids are classes of lipids that are also referred to as nutraceuticals. These lipids are components of foods, which have nutritional as well as numerous other health benefits, and consumption has been shown to prevent certain deadly diseases. These compounds can only be obtained from plant products; there is therefore a need for more research on the availability of these compounds from common food sources. Oils extracted from Citrullus colocynthis and Parkia biglobosa seeds were analysed for vitamin E, phospholipid, and phytosterol contents using a chromatographic technique. The seeds had total vitamin E contents of 53.47 and 42.57 mg/100 g, phytosterol contents of 260 and 451 mg/100 g, and phospholipid contents of 409 and 1,603 mg/100 g for C. colocynthis and P. biglobosa, respectively. Thus, consumption of these two plants as condiments will help people consume these essential lipids and could serve as dietary supplements to prevent and combat occurrence of certain deadly diseases; this is important as the world is revolving towards disease prevention rather than curing, which is often more expensive and difficult.
Thermal and Rheological Studies of Ricinodendron Heudelotii Wood for Its Pulp Production Potential
Bolade Mercy Ogunleye,James Sunday Fabiyi,Joseph A. Fuwape 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 2016 Journal of Forest Science Vol.32 No.4
Thermal stability and rheological behaviors of Ricinodendron heudelotii wood were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis conducted at a heating rate of 10oC/min from 20 to 600oC in a nitrogen atmosphere indicated that there was no variation in the decomposition of the onset and final temperature for all the polymers. The thermal behaviours were investigated at a temperature range from 130 to 0oC at 3oC/min, multi-frequencies of 0.1-10 Hz using dynamic mechanical analysis. N-methyl-2-pyrolidone saturated specimens were tested while submerged under the same solvent. Polymers decomposition pattern during thermogravimetric analysis are similar in the radial position of the wood. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of R. heudelotii is 45±1oC at 0.1 Hz. The Tg differs from the innerwood to outerwood. The Tg showed that N-methyl-2-pyrolidone saturated R. heudelotii would require low energy consumption during chemi-thermomechanical pulping.

This paper explored the effect of different calcination temperatures on the catalytic performance of HFC-134a conversion over Al2O3. The catalyst (Al2O3) used here was prepared by calcinating it at different temperatures, i.e. 500℃, 650℃, 700℃ and 800℃. These calcined catalysts were placed in a plug flow reactor-GC/MS system and their efficiency in decomposing HFC- 134a was investigated. It was found that Al2O3-650 (calcined at 650℃) exhibited the best decomposition rate with more than 99% decomposition lasting for 7 hours. It was followed by Al2O3-800, Al2O3-700 and the least decomposition potential by Al2O3-500. A valuable by-product trifluoroethylene (TrFE) was obtained at the expense of the HFC-134a decomposition and the yield of TrFE over a period of 18 hours was the greatest over Al2O3-650 and the least over Al2O3-500. Al2O3-800 and Al2O3-700 closely followed but the yield of TrFE started drastically declining after 8 hours. The yield of CO2 was also relatively lesser over Al2O3-650 than the other calcination temperatures. It was concluded that calcinating Al2O3 at 650℃ extended the lifetime of the catalyst due to greater surface area, greater number of weak acidic sites and lesser number of strong acidic sites.
