      • Synthesizing a comprehensive definition of spirituality and spiritual development and the construct validity of the optimism subscale of the Beliefs Systems Analysis Scale

        The purpose of this work is two-fold in an effort to narrow the approach to the topics of spirituality, spiritual development and assessment of spirituality. First, a comprehensive review of the literature will accumulate and critique available material on the dimensions that define spirituality and three spiritual development models for similarities, differences, contributions and omissions. Both theoretical and empirical works will be reviewed. Comparisons are made among the definitions of spirituality. The models are critiqued for each one's ability to explain how the concept of spirituality, as comprehensively defined by ASERVIC, develops in the model. Menke's Model of Spiritual Orientation is presented as a model that addresses the gaps found in the literature. Second, an investigation of the construct validity of the optimism subscale of the Belief Systems Analysis Scale (BSAS). The BSAS is a measure of Afrocentric worldview which is one of the reviewed constructs embroiled in spirituality and spiritual development in need of further investigation. Two focus groups are conducted to determine the necessity for rewording of items. The focus group data is presented to reflect the insights and ideas provided by the focus group. The reworded items and the entire revised scale are presented. The revised scale is distributed to 67 participants to complete. A factor analysis is conducted on the data 67 participants. It is concluded that rewording items in positive direction might improve factor loadings of the optimism subscale items and analysis with a larger population is needed.

      • The relationship of iron metabolism with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease

        Iron overload disorders, such as hereditary hemochromatosis, are characterized by an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis and electrical dysfunction. However, it is unclear whether the health risks associated with iron overload are present in people with elevated iron stores within the spectrum of normal iron metabolism. The purpose of this research was to investigate the association of elevated iron stores, reflected by plasma ferritin and transferrin saturation, with peripheral arterial disease. QT prolongation, diabetes, and mortality in general population samples without iron overload disorders. We investigated whether ferritin and transferrin saturation were associated with peripheral arterial disease in a representative sample of US adult men and postmenopausal women participating in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 3). There were no significant associations among men or postmenopausal women overall. However, after stratifying the analysis by cholesterol levels, ferritin and transferrin saturation were associated with peripheral arterial disease among men and postmenopausal women with total cholesterol levels ≥200 mg/dL, but not among those with total cholesterol <200 mg/dL. We also investigated whether ferritin and transferrin saturation were associated with QT, PR, and QRS interval among men and postmenopausal women ≥40 years of age participating in NHANES 3. We found no evidence of an association after multivariable adjustment. The association of ferritin and transferrin saturation with incident diabetes was investigated among Korean adults who received up to 4 medical exams at the Kangbuk Samsung Medical Center. Among men, higher levels of ferritin but not transferrin saturation were associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Among women, higher levels of ferritin and transferrin saturation were associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Finally, we investigated whether ferritin and transferrin saturation were associated with mortality among men, premenopausal women, and postmenopausal women participating in NHANES 3 Linked Mortality Study. After excluding participants with a history of cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline and participants taking iron supplements at baseline, ferritin and transferrin saturation were not associated with all-cause, cardiovascular, or cancer mortality among men, premenopausal women, or postmenopausal women.

      • Computational and matrix-isolation spectroscopy studies of cyanocyclobutadienes

        Cyclobutadienes have been molecules of great interest for some time. The properties of the ring are altered by the presence of substituents. This work focuses on how cyano substituents affect the properties of the ring. Chapter 2 computationally explores the effects the cyano groups have on the energy of the ring by using an isodesmic reaction, the singlet-triplet gaps, structural trends of the triplets, and the energies of C4H 4 isomers such as tetrahedrane. Chapter 3 covers additional computational work on the trimerization of cyanoacetylene to give tricyanobenzenes through the intermediate dicyanocyclobutadienes. The dipole moments and rotational constants of the unsymmetrical tricyanobenzenes were computed to aid in the identification of rotational transitions in FT-microwave experiments. With computational support for the production of cyanocyclobutadienes, the focus switched to attempting to produce and identify them using matrix isolation spectroscopy. The attempt to produce tetracyanocyclobutadiene from diazotetracyanocyclopentadiene is discussed in Chapter 4. Difficulties arose due to the lack of volatility of diazotetracyanocyclopentadiene and the inability to observe the formation of the photochemical intermediate tetracyanocyclopentadienylidene. Solution studies did lead to the production of the tetracyanocyclopentadienide ion. In another attempt to form a cyanocyclobutadiene, Chapter 5 covers the production of monocyanocyclobutadiene from the precursor cyanopyrone. Monocyanocyclobutadiene is identified in the matrix using IR spectroscopy. In an unrelated topic, Chapter 1 covers the computational studies to support earlier experimental work on 1,3-diphenypropynylidne. Through the use of computed IR spectra, the approximate geometry of 1,3-diphenylpropynylidne was deduced to be planar with an angle of 125° at the carbene carbon.

      • Counseling psychology doctoral trainees' satisfaction with clinical methods training

        Counseling psychology doctoral trainees' satisfaction with their clinical methods training is an important predictor of their self-efficacy as counselors, persistence in graduate programs, and probability of practicing psychotherapy in their careers (Fernando & Hulse-Killacky, 2005; Hadjipavlou & Ogrodniczuk, 2007; Morton & Worthley, 1995). Much of the extant literature related to assessing psychology graduate students' satisfaction with their training has focused on supervision processes and has not adequately assessed other elements of training such as coursework, clinical experiences, and the learning contexts of practicum sites and program settings. Additionally, the available research is largely quantitative data based on geographically restricted samples that does not adequately explain reasons for trainees' satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The purpose of the present study was to broadly identify factors that contribute to counseling psychology doctoral students' satisfaction with their clinical methods training in coursework, clinical experiences, supervision, and practicum and program contexts. Eight advanced doctoral trainees from APA-accredited programs in counseling psychology were interviewed about their satisfaction with their training experiences. Data was analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (Hill, 2012). Results indicated that trainees generally entered programs with broad/unclear expectations, but some identified preferences for practicum settings, developing clinical skills, learning approaches to psychotherapy, and training in multicultural competence. Participants expressed higher satisfaction with courses that included multicultural content, training in theoretical approaches to therapy, and clinically-applicable content using teaching methods that included combining lecture with dialogue and experiential exercises. Diversity in clients' demographics, presenting concerns, therapeutic modalities, and distress levels contributed to higher satisfaction with clinical experiences. Additionally, participants expressed their value for the opportunity to accrue client contact towards internship requirements. Strong supervisory relationships were most frequently identified as contributing to participants' satisfaction with supervision. Participants expressed highest satisfaction with supervisors who conveyed care and support; were respectful, invested, competent, and experienced; provided new learning and feedback; and demonstrated multicultural competence. Practicum sites which provided an appropriate balance of training and clinical work, met trainees' expectations for developmentally-appropriate training and clinical experiences, and fostered positive relationships between trainees and competent, invested staff members were described to produce highest satisfaction. Participants also expressed highest satisfaction when they had open, safe interpersonal relationships with faculty and felt secure in their ability to secure practicum placements in a range of settings. All participants stated they would feel more satisfied with their programs if more courses were available, but opinions varied as to the type of additional training desired. Findings are considered from the perspective of experiential learning theory (Kolb, 1984) and situated learning theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991). Implications for program faculty, practicum staff, and future research are discussed.

      • The acquisition of Spanish Vowels by native English-Speaking students in Spanish immersion programs

        Native-like pronunciation is necessary for membership into some social groups and to be considered a legitimate speaker of a language. Language immersion education aims to develop bilingual individuals, able to participate in multiple global communities, and while the lexical, syntactic, and sociolinguistic development of immersion learners is well documented, their phonological skills are not. This study set out to address this gap by investigating immersion learners' pronunciation of Spanish vowels, a sound class known to lead to a foreign accent, comparing the vowel productions of native English-speaking learners in one-way (foreign language) immersion and two-way (bilingual) immersion programs to those of their native Spanish-speaking peers and their teachers. A total of 85 immersion students participated in this study. A cross-sectional sample of students from each of the program/language groups was taken; students from each of four grade levels (first, third, fifth, and seventh) participated. Students completed an animal picture sorting task in pairs during which their speech was audio and video recorded. Up to twenty tokens of each of the five Spanish vowels, for a possible total of 100 tokens per subject, were isolated and examined via spectrographic analysis in order to measure first and second formant values. The tokens examined for each vowel were balanced for their occurrence in stressed and unstressed syllables. Students also completed a written questionnaire in order to gather data about extralinguistic factors (i.e., attitudes and motivation) that have been shown to influence pronunciation. The findings indicate that the vowel productions of immersion learners differ from those of native Spanish-speaking peers. In general, the vowel space of the learner groups is larger than that of the native speaker peer group. Over time, the number of differences between one-way NES learners and native speakers increase while the number of differences between two-way NES learners and native speakers decrease. This finding suggests that there may be an effect of program model; however, differences in the ethnic background and exposure to Spanish outside of school between the two learner groups may also play a role and thus make it difficult to attribute differences solely to the effect of program model. Differences in attitude between the groups do not reach statistical significance and do not correlate with more native-like vowel pronunciations.

      • Exciton Transport in Organic Semiconductors

        Photovoltaic cells based on organic semiconductors are attractive for their use as a renewable energy source owing to their abundant feedstock and compatibility with low-cost coating techniques on flexible substrates. In contrast to photovoltaic cells based traditional inorganic semiconductors, photon absorption in an organic semiconductor results in the formation of a coulombically bound electron-hole pair, or exciton. The transport of excitons, consequently, is of critical importance as excitons mediate the interaction between charge and light in organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). In this dissertation, a strong connection between the fundamental photophysical parameters that control nanoscopic exciton energy transfer and the mesoscopic exciton transport is established. With this connection in place, strategies for enhancing the typically short length scale for exciton diffusion (L D) can be developed. Dilution of the organic semiconductor boron subphthalocyanine chloride (SubPc) is found to increase the LD for SubPc by 50%. In turn, OPVs based on dilute layers of SubPc exhibit a 30% enhancement in power conversion efficiency. The enhancement in power conversion efficiency is realized via enhancements in LD, optimized optical spacing, and directed exciton transport at an exciton permeable interface. The role of spin, energetic disorder, and thermal activation on L D are also addressed. Organic semiconductors that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence and efficient intersystem and reverse intersystem crossing highlight the balance between singlet and triplet exciton energy transfer and diffusion. Temperature dependent measurements for LD provide insight into the inhomogeneously broadened exciton density of states and the thermal nature of exciton energy transfer. Additional topics include energy-cascade OPV architectures and broadband, spectrally tunable photodetectors based on organic semiconductors.
