Effects of Topical Tamoxifen on Wound Healing of Burned Skin in Rats

Mehrvarz, Shaban,Ebrahimi, Ali,Sahraei, Hedayat,Bagheri, Mohammad Hasan,Fazili, Sima,Manoochehry, Shahram,Rasouli, Hamid Reza Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2017 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.44 No.5

Background This study aimed to assess the effects of the topical application of tamoxifen on wound healing of burned skin in Wistar rats by evaluating 3 healing characteristics: fibrotic tissue thickness (FTT), scar surface area (SSA), and angiogenesis in the healed scar tissue. Methods Eighteen male Wistar rats were used in this study. A third-degree burn wound was made on the shaved animals' back, measuring $2{\times}2{\times}2cm$. In the first group, a 2% tamoxifen ointment was applied to the wound twice daily for 8 weeks. The second group received a placebo ointment during the same period. The third group did not receive any treatment and served as the control group. Results The median (interquartile range=[Q1, Q3]) FTT was 1.35 (1.15, 1.62) mm, 1.00 (0.95, 1.02) mm, and 1.25 (0.8, 1.5) mm in the control, tamoxifen, and placebo groups, respectively (P=0.069). However, the FTT in the tamoxifen group was less than in the placebo and control groups. The median angiogenesis was 3.5 (3.00, 6.25), 8.00 (6.75, 9.25), and 7.00 (5.50, 8.25) vessels per high-power field for the control, tamoxifen, and placebo groups, respectively (P=0.067). However, the median angiogenesis was higher in the tamoxifen group than in the control group. No significant difference was observed in the mean SSA between the tamoxifen group and the control group (P=0.990). Conclusions Local application of tamoxifen increased angiogenesis and decreased the FTT, with no change in the SSA in burned skin areas. These effects are expected to expedite the wound healing process, reducing contracture and preventing hypertrophic scar and keloid formation.

Adsorptive separation of CO2 and CH4 by the broom sorghum based activated carbon functionalized by diethanolamine

Elaheh Mehrvarz,Ali Asghar Ghoreyshi,Mohsen Jahanshahi 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.2

A low-cost activated carbon (AC) was produced from the broom sorghum stalk using KOH as the chemical activating agent, and then the surface of AC was functionalized with diethanolamine to enhance CO2/CH4 selectivity. Characteristics of pristine and DEA-functionalized ACs were determined through different analyses such as Boehm’s method, BET, FT-IR, SEM, and TGA. The adsorption behavior of pure carbon dioxide and pure methane on these adsorbents was investigated in a temperature range of 288-308 K and pressure range of 0-25 bar using an apparatus based on a volumetric method. Results indicated that amine functionalization significantly improved the selectivity of CO2/CH4. The enhancement of CO2 ideal adsorption selectivity over CH4 from 1.51 for the pristine AC to 5.75 for the AC-DEA was attributed to adsorbate-adsorbent chemical interaction. The present DEA-functionalized AC adsorbent can be a good candidate for applications in natural gas and landfill gas purifications.

      • Serum Gastrin and the Pepsinogen I/II Ratio as Markers for Diagnosis of Premalignant Gastric Lesions

        Shafaghi, Afshin,Mansour-Ghanaei, Fariborz,Joukar, Farahnaz,Sharafkhah, Maryam,Mesbah, Alireza,Askari, Kurosh,Geranmayeh, Siamak,Mehrvarz, Alireza,Souti, Fatemeh,Sokhanvar, Homayoon,Fakhrieh, Saba,Ami Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

Background: Iran is a country with very high incidences of stomach cancer, especially in Northern parts. Here we assessed prognostic value of serum screening biomarkers among people >50 years old for early detection of precancerous lesions in a hot spot for gastric carcinoma in Guilan Province, North Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted on 1,390 residents of Lashtenasha city with the mean age (SD) of 61.8 (9.02) years old (50.8% females) to assess the association of gastrin and the pepsinogen (PG) I/II ratio with premalignant gastric lesions. Blood samples were taken for CBC, blood group, and serologic exams (PGI, PGII, and gastrin 17) from each subject. Expert gastroenterologists performed upper GI endoscopy and ROC curves were generated to determine appropriate cutoff points. Results: Mean values of PGI, PGII, PGI/PGII and gastrin were significantly different between patients with and without atrophy or metaplasia (P<0.05). To diagnose atrophy and intestinal metaplasia, a significantly higher AUC was observed for the PGI/PGII ratio (70 and 72%, respectively) compared to the PGI (56, 55%), PGII (63, 64%) and gastrin (59, 61%) (all p<0.001). Conclusions: Biomarker tests such as the PGI/II ratio can be used in the screening and diagnosis of subjects at high gastric cancer risk in our region.
