Vol.16 No.2

The purpose of this study was to define the concept and component factors of career resilience, and to develop the college students’ career resilience scale. The subjects of the study were 217 university students in Seoul. The results of the study were as follows: First, career resilience was conceptualized as that ability to perceive things to be new, flexible, and challenging. Career resilience was composed as creativity, future orientation, challenging spirit, and flexibility. Second, the career resilience scale was developed by performing the result of the explaratory factor analysis based on the definition of career resilience and component factors. It included 20 items for 4 factors which were creativity(6 items), flexibility(5 items), challenging spirit(5 items), future orientation(4 items). In addition, the following limitations of the study and implication for the future studies were suggested. The limitation of the study was that the validity of career resilience scale was not presented. The confirmed factor analysis, content validity, and convergent validity should be performed. Also, it was not sufficiently discussed whether sociality should be included or not as a factor of career resilience. These limitations of the study was hoped to be complemented through the follow-up studies. In spite of these limitations, the present study is important in that it defines career resilience from new perspective, and provide the scale to measure it. The developed 20 items career resilience scale is a valid and reliable measurement. Therefore, this instrument will help to activate the studies of career resilience area.

Vol.52 No.4

In recent years, many scholars have recognized that despite institutional reforms, South Korea is falling into what Colin Crouch coins as post-democracy. They have observed that faltering on the verge of democratic consolidation, South Korea is experiencing a paradoxical process: while it is moving fast toward constitutional democracy in which election can make government more accountable and responsible for its conduct, its citizens gradually become a passive and incoherent mass responding intermittently only to the dramatic issue set by politicians and militant political activists. Yet too often how and why the post-democratic trivialization of participatory democracy and the dramatic development of citizen movement do intersect in South Korea remains unexplained. Being concerned with these observations, this interview with Amy Gutmann aims to explore a regulative principle which can guides thinking in the ongoing process in which citizens as well as experts consider what justice requires in the case of particular conflicts in specific contexts, with special but not exclusive attention to civic education. Specifically, addressing the principles and structure of Amy Gutmann’s liberal theory of justice in light of liberal egalitarianism, deliberative democracy, democratic education, and identity politics, this interview seeks to investigate her theories of democratic education in four aspects: the plausible reconciliation of liberal egalitarianism with redistribution and participation, the realization of democratic education through deliberative democracy, the need for civic education with respect to multicultural coexistence, and the applicability of democratic education especially in South Korea which is experiencing both political indifference and ideological antagonism.

Animal-Assisted Interventions for Improving Psychosocial Well-being and Quality of Life in Pediatric Oncology : A Systematic Review

        Amy Sitabkhan,Kaela Verbeck,Pamela Ruz,Kayleigh Pierce,Amy Ngo,Claudia L. Hilton,Diane M. Collins 대한작업치료학회 2020 대한작업치료학회지 Vol.28 No.3

Objectives: This systematic review examined the association of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) with quality of life (QoL) for pediatric oncology patients, for potential use in occupational therapy practice. Methods: Articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 2002-2019 from PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT), Journal of Oncology, SCOPUS, and OTSeeker were selected for AAI with therapy dogs specific to the target population of pediatric oncology patients undergoing treatment in clinical settings. Results: Moderate evidence was found for AAI and mood improvement, pain reduction, and stress relief; and low-level evidence supported AAI for decreasing anxiety. The most significant AAI improvements were seen in perceptions of pain, stress levels, and mood. Discussion: Evidence suggests that occupational therapists may want to consider incorporating AAI into therapy sessions as it serves as a distraction and short-term coping strategy for children undergoing oncological treatment.

A quantitative meta-analysis of organizational ownership and technical efficiency: non-linear influence by facility types and time for nonprofit and for-profit healthcare providers Amy Freemana,

2020 International Review of Public Administration Vol.25 No.2

This study seeks to determine if for-profit healthcare organizations are more technically efficient than nonprofit organizations. We attempted to answer two questions: Does the technical efficiency of hospitals and nursing homes vary depending on ownership type? If so, how does time moderate the relationship between ownership and technical efficiency? Our findings do not show that for-profit healthcare providers are universally more technically efficient than nonprofit healthcare facilities. However, for-profit nursing homes are more technically efficient than nonprofit facilities, while there was no difference between nonprofits and forprofits in hospitals. An examination of healthcare facilities reveals that nonprofit institutions have only recently become efficient, while for-profit organizations were more efficient in the past. In conclusion, institutional changes in the healthcare delivery system of the US developed differently, depending on organization’s ownership and facility types. Theoretical and practical considerations were recommended as a policy tool in healthcare practices in terms of market and population for technical efficiency.

        Conquest, Occupation and Ethnic Cleansing

Vol.14 No.1

The recent adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1820 declared that crimes of sexual violence are to be excluded from amnesty provisions. In ensuing years the surviving “comfort women” and numerous supportive NGOs achieved significant moral victories and transformed human rights discourse, but did not attain their yearned-for legal redress, formal apology and official reparations. Among the arguments raised in opposition to the “comfort women” and their supporters was that rape, or more generally sexual violence, during war was not recognized as a violation of international law in the 1930s and early 1940s. It was also claimed that the treaties following World War II rendered the individuals subjected to the“comfort women”system without recourse. There is considerable debate about those propositions, although they were sustained in litigation. One hopes, however, that developments in the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century, particularly the Kunaric and Akayesu trials in the ICTY and the ICTR concerning the atrocities in Bosnia and Rwanda. But, one might ask, what do these developments “really mean”? The answer might be: not much; or at least not much right now. I am a pragmatist; and comfortable with being deemed doctrinally impure if I can contribute a scintilla to easing the lives of actual women who, as a result of rape and other sexual violence in armed conflicts are often physically and emotionally scarred, scared, silent, shunned, starving, sick, shelterless and sterile. Sensitivity to particular cultural, historical, religious, social and economic contexts is of critical importance in crafting effective, remedial strategies. There is some hope for success with the “help first, theory later” approach. It is purposefully hard to establish liability in criminal prosecutions, international or domestic. The liability theories in “official” rape or sexual violation cases that appear to hold the most promise are “command responsibility” or “participation in a joint criminal exercise”; although the theory of “conspiracy” has potential. At the very least, the United Nations and other regional bodies should adequately supply the troops and peacekeepers that they dispatch to regions that are in upheaval, train them to not exacerbate the problems of sexual violence, and guarantee serious negative consequences when their troops or peacekeepers violate the rules. There is no “single” appropriate remedy; they should be mixed and matched as the situations demand. The time to act is now.

Prevalence and predictors of naturopathic practitioners’ self-reported practice behaviours: results of an international survey

        Amie Steel,Iva Lloyd,Hope Foley,Matthew J. Leach 한국한의학연구원 2022 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.11 No.4

Background The naturopathic workforce spans over 108 countries and is estimated to provide care to over 5.5 million patients globally per month. Despite such demand, naturopathic practitioners are not well integrated into mainstream health systems, in part due to poor knowledge about naturopathy among policy makers and other health professionals. This study aims to describe naturopathic practitioners’ practice behaviours and examine the characteristics that predict the use of naturopathic treatments and practices around the world. Methods An international cross-sectional online survey was distributed through World Naturopathic Federation membership organisations and social media accounts. Multivariate reverse stepwise logistic regression was undertaken to examine potential predictors of practice behaviours, adjusting for the influence of demographic and practice characteristics Results A response rate of 78.4% was achieved (n=478). Lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, nutritional products and herbal medicines were most consistently prescribed Always or Most of the time. At least one-half of participants discussed nine of the ten health topics during clinical practice Always or Most of the time. More than one-half (55.1%) of participants practiced in a location with statutory regulation/occupational certification. Compared to participants located in countries with voluntary certification/no regulation, those in countries with statutory registration/occupational licensing had higher odds of prescribing nutritional products (adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=2.5) or IV/injection therapies (aOR=18.4). Conclusion The findings of this study provide important insights into contemporary naturopathic practice behaviour, which may help to overcome misconceptions about such practice among other health professionals, policy makers and the community.

Regulation of Ca2+ Signaling in Pulmonary Hypertension

2013 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.17 No.1

Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH) remains imperative if we are to successfully improve the quality of life and life span of patients with the disease. A whole plethora of mechanisms are associated with the development and progression of PH. Such complexity makes it difficult to isolate one particular pathway to target clinically. Changes in intracellular free calcium concentration, the most common intracellular second messenger, can have significant impact in defining the pathogenic mechanisms leading to its development and persistence. Signaling pathways leading to the elevation of [Ca2+]cyt contribute to pulmonary vasoconstriction, excessive proliferation of smooth muscle cells and ultimately pulmonary vascular remodeling. This current review serves to summarize the some of the most recent advances in the regulation of calcium during pulmonary hypertension.

Validation of New Symptom-Based Fibromyalgia Criteria for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Co-morbidity Studies

( Ami D Sperber ),( Smadar Akiva ),( Moshe Leshno ),( Zamir Halpern ),( Dan Buskila ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2011 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.17 No.1

Background/Aims There is significant co-morbidity between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). However, FMS is diagnosed by physical examination, which limits the conduct of co-morbidity studies in a large population-based study. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic validity of a new symptom-based criteria in patients with FMS and/or IBS using the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria as a gold standard. Methods The study participants consisted of women with FMS (n=30), IBS (n=27) and controls (n=28). A new symptom-based diagnostic criteria for FMS comprised a regional pain scale and a visual analogue scale for fatigue. All subjects underwent a physical examination for FMS (ACR criteria) and structured questionnaires of regional pain scale and visual analogue scale for fatigue. A fibromyalgia intensity score was calculated and thresholds of tenderness were determined by a dolorimeter. Results The number of participants diagnosed with FMS in the entire study population (n=85) was 31 by the new criteria. Compared to the ACR, the sensitivity of the new criteria was 82.9%, specificity 96.0%, positive predictive value 93.5% and negative predictive value 88.9%. In addition, new criteria were useful for the diagnosis of FMS among the subjects with IBS. A fibromyalgia intensity score was significantly correlated with the threshold of tenderness (r=-0.62, P<0.001). Conclusions The new symptom-based diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of FMS can be used in large-scale clinical and epidemiological co-morbidity studies, in which physical examination is unfeasible. Gastroenterologists investigating the effects of co-morbid FMS in IBS patients can use these new ciriteria with confidence. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2011;17:67-72)

Injury Fear, Stigma, and Reporting in Professional Dancers

2019 Safety and health at work Vol.10 No.3

Background: Professional dance is a physically demanding career path with a high injury prevalence, yet an ingrained culture of hiding or pushing through injuries. Developing better knowledge surrounding the cultural beliefs and behaviors related to injury reporting is critical to understand their incidence and burden. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate injury fear and injury reporting behaviors in professional dancers in Australia. Methods: This study utilized data collected in a cross-sectional survey of professional dancers in Australia. Descriptive analysis of injury fear and reporting stigma are presented with comparisons between subgroups (full-time versus part-time dancers; men versus women) conducted using two-sided Fisher’s exact tests. Results: A total of 146 professional dancers were included. Over half (63%) of the respondents reported that they fear sustaining a dance-related injury, that they believe there is still a stigma surrounding injuries in dance (62%), and that this stigma has led to a delay in reporting or seeking care for an injury (51%). A lower proportion of part-time than full-time dancers reported that they would usually tell someone within their dance employment about an injury (35.1% vs. 59.6%, p ¼ 0.006). Conclusion: Professional dancers are at risk of losing contracts or roles if they are injured, and therefore, it is common to dance through their occurrence. Many dancers, particularly those dancing part-time, are unwilling to tell their employers about their injuries. Action is required to improve this culture regarding injury reporting and help seeking for more effective injury understanding, prevention, and management in dance.
