Predictive role of hematologic parameters in testicular torsion

        Mustafa Güneş,Mehmet Umul,Muammer Altok,Mehmet Akyuz,Cemal Selcuk İşoğlu,Fatih Uruc,Bekir Aras,Alpaslan Akbaş,Ercan Baş 대한비뇨의학회 2015 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.56 No.4

Purpose: To evaluate the predictive role of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet count (PLT) in the diagnosis of testicular torsion (TT) and testicular viability following TT. Materials and Methods: We analyzed two study groups in this retrospective study: 75 patients with a diagnosis of TT (group 1) and 56 age-matched healthy subjects (group 2). We performed a complete blood count as a part of the diagnostic procedure, and NLR, PLR, MPV, and PLT values were recorded. We compared the patient and control groups in terms of these parameters. Then, TT patients were divided into two subgroups according to the time elapsed since the onset of symptoms. Subsequently, we evaluated the relationship between the duration of symptoms and these parameters. Results: There were significant differences between groups 1 and 2 in NLR, PLR, and PLT (p<0.001 for all). There was no predictive role of MPV in the diagnosis of TT (p=0.328). We determined significantly high sensitivity and specificity levels for NLR in the prediction of TT diagnosis (84% and 92%, respectively). Furthermore, NLR was significantly related to the duration of symptoms in TT patients (p=0.01). Conclusions: NLR may be a useful parameter in the diagnosis of TT. Furthermore, NLR may be used as a predictive factor for testicular viability following TT.

In Vitro Effects of Rabeprazole on Human Pylorus Tone

( Necdet Fatih Yasar ),( Erdal Polat ),( Mustafa Duman ),( Meltem Dagdelen ),( Mehmet Yalcın Gunal ),( Orhan Uzun ),( Cebrail Akyuz ),( Kıvanc Derya Peker ),( Sinan Yol ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2015 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.21 No.2

Background/Aims It has been reported that proton pump inhibitors induce relaxation in different types of smooth muscles. The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro effects of proton pump inhibitors on human pylorus muscle. Methods Pyloric sphincters were studied in 10 patients who were operated for stomach cancer. In isolated organ bath, control and response to rabeprazole were recorded following contraction with carbachol. During the treatment experiment, while distilled water was applied during the control experiment in every 5 minutes, rabeprazole was administered in every 5 minutes at doses of 10-6, 10-5, 10-4, and 10-3 M respectively. Contraction frequencies, maximum contraction values and muscle tones were measured. Results The contraction frequencies in the control group were greater than the rabeprazole group in the second, third and fourth intervals while the maximum contraction values in the rabeprazole group were lower in the fourth interval. Even though muscles tones were not different in both groups during all intervals, it was remarkable that the muscle tone was significantly decreased in the rabeprazole group during the fourth interval compared to the first and second intervals. Conclusions In the present study, high doses of rabeprazole reduced contraction frequencies, maximum contraction values, and muscle tone of human pylorus. Posttreatment Effects of Olea Europaea L. Leaf Extract on Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Injury and Oxidative Stress in Rats

        Derya Ustuner,Emine Colak,Murat Dincer,Neslihan Tekin,Dilek Burukoglu Donmez,Fahrettin Akyuz,Ertugrul Colak,Umut Kerem Kolac,Emre Entok,Mehmet Cengiz Ustuner 한국식품영양과학회 2018 Journal of medicinal food Vol.21 No.9

The aim of this study is to examine the therapeutic effects of Olea europaea L. leaf extract on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver damage in rats. In the experiments, 3- to 4-month-old 28 male Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control, O. europaea leaf extract, CCl4, and curative. The CCl4 and curative groups received CCl4 (0.2 mL/kg) intraperitoneally for 10 days to form hepatic injury. O. europaea (80 mg/kg) leaf extract was given orally to the curative group dissolved in distilled water the following 14 days. Hepatic and antioxidant enzyme levels, p53, caspase 3, lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde (MDA), and also DNA fragmentation levels were determined to establish oxidative stress in hepatic cell damage and its consequences. After formation of liver damage, oral administration of the O. europaea significantly reduced CCl4-induced elevations of serum alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels (P < .001), MDA levels of both blood (P < .001) and liver tissues (P < .001), DNA fragmentation (P < .001), p53 (P < .001), and caspase 3 (P < .001) levels of liver tissues. Also this administration in curative group significantly increased CCl4-induced reductions of superoxide dismutase (SOD) (P < .001) and catalase (CAT) (P < .001) activity of blood samples and decreased SOD (P < .001) and CAT (P < .05) activity observed in liver tissue curative groups compared with CCl4 curative group. In CCl4 group, liver tissue samples exhibited remarkable damage because of CCl4 and reduction of these damages were observed in the curative group. Our results showed that O. europaea leaf extract was effective in reducing hepatic damage caused by CCl4 by reducing lipid peroxidation, regulating antioxidant enzymes, and minimizing DNA damage.
