Universal education is one of the millennial development goal set to be achieved in the world. According to UNICEF there are 31 million girls of primary school age not enrolled in school. Well how can we achieve this goal when girls are not enrolled in school or drop out due to early child marriages and other cultural practices such as female genital mutilation, poverty, lack of school fees, sexual violence and lack of SANITARY TOWELS? How can we achieve this goal when girls miss close to 5 days of school because they cannot afford sanitary towels? In this paper I have explained the problems girls schooling in the rural areas face during their menstruation cycle and the need for introducing an affordable option. Sanitary towels are very expensive and girls from poor families in the rural areas use unhygienic methods during their menstruation such as old pieces of clothes, tissue papers, cotton wool, blankets, tree leaves, feathers, some sit on soil and old goat skins. These girls are more likely to suffer from vaginal infections. Others end up engaging in transactional sex in order to get money to buy sanitary towels this exposes the young girls to risks of getting HIV/AIDS and some end up pregnant thus dropping out of school. The period around puberty many girls drop out of school or are absent for close to 5 days of school. Girls in primary school miss 18 weeks of school a year while girls from secondary school miss 24 weeks in a year. Limited access to safe, affordable, convenient and appropriate methods for dealing with menstruation has far reaching implications for the rights, physical, social and mental wellbeing of many adolescent girls in Kitui, Kenya. For a typical poor Kenyan family there is little money to barely cater for food. Sanitary towels are not a priority. We would like to introduce bio-degradable sanitary towels using banana fibers; they are eco-friendly, hygienic and affordable. Providing these bio degradable sanitary towels to girls would be a life changer for numerous reasons such as hygiene, health, education and empowerment. Because it can greatly improve a girl’s overall school experience, performance and boost self-esteem and confidence. The girls are able to participate fully in class and feel more comfortable.
