        Effect of Mn Addition on Corrosion and Biocompatibility Characteristics of a New Biodegradable Mg–1Ca–2Zn–1RE Alloy

        In this study, the effect of Mn addition on the corrosion properties and biocompatibility of a new biodegradable Mg–1Ca–2Zn–1RE–xMn alloy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 wt%) was investigated using Hank’s solution. The main purpose was to achievea biocompatible alloy with optimum corrosion properties which can be used to fabricate biodegradable implants. Thus aspecial composition of alloying elements was used. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that Mn addition does not induce anyMn intermetallic phase. Besides, Mn shifted the solute elements from the grain boundaries toward the matrix. The corrosionresistance of the alloys was efficiently improved by adding Mn, according to the electrochemical measurements. Thehighest corrosion resistance in comparison with other alloys was observed for the alloy with 0.9 wt% Mn. Moreover, theFourier-transform infrared spectroscopy test and scanning electron microscope images of the immersed specimens in Hank’ssolution, indicate that Mg–1Ca–2Zn–1RE–xMn is a biocompatible alloy as phosphate and carbonate groups are formed onthe specimens which are the fingerprint of hydroxyapatite formation.

        Development of a hybrid energy storage sizing algorithm associated with the evaluation of power management in different driving cycles

        In this paper, a hybrid energy storage sizing algorithm for electric vehicles is developed to achieve a semi-optimum cost-effective design. Using the developed algorithm, a driving cycle is divided into its micro-trips and the power and energy demands in each micro-trip are determined. The battery size is estimated because the battery fulfills the power demands. Moreover, the ultra-capacitor (UC) energy (or the number of UC modules) is assessed because the UC delivers the maximum energy demands of the different micro-trips of a driving cycle. Finally, a design factor, which shows the power of the hybrid energy storage control strategy, is utilized to evaluate the newly designed control strategies. Using the developed algorithm, energy-saving loss, driver satisfaction criteria, and battery life criteria are calculated using a feed-forward dynamic modeling software program and are utilized for comparison among different energy storage candidates. This procedure is applied to the hybrid energy storage sizing of a series hybrid electric city bus in Manhattan and to the Tehran driving cycle. Results show that a higher aggressive driving cycle (Manhattan) requires more expensive energy storage system and more sophisticated energy management strategy.

      • High Expression of Lung Resistance Protein mRNA at Diagnosis Predicts Poor Early Response to Induction Chemotherapy in Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

        Background: Treatment failure in leukemia is due to either pharmacokinetic resistance or cell resistance to drugs. Materials and Methods: Gene expression of multiple drug resistance protein (MDR-1), multidrug resistance-related protein (MRP) and low resistance protein (LRP) was assessed in 45 pediatric ALL cases and 7 healthy controls by real time PCR. The expression was scored as negative, weak, moderate and strong. Results: The male female ratio of cases was 2.75:1 and the mean age was 5.2 years. Some 26/45 (58%) were in standard risk, 17/45(38%) intermediate and 2/45 (4%) in high risk categorie, 42/45 (93%) being B-ALL and recurrent translocations being noted in 5/45 (11.0%). Rapid early response (RER) at day 14 was seen in 37/45 (82.3%) and slow early response (SER) in 8/45 (17.7%) cases. Positive expression of MDR-1, LRP and MRP was noted in 14/45 (31%), 15/45 (33%) and 27/45 (60%) cases and strong expression in 3/14 (21%), 11/27 (40.7%) and 8/15 (53.3%) cases respectively. Dual or more gene positivity was noted in 17/45 (38%) cases. 46.5 % (7/15) of LRP positive cases at day 14 were in RER as compared to 100% (30/30) of LRP negative cases (p<0.05). All 8 (100%) LRP positive cases in SER had strong LRP expression (p=<0.05). Moreover, only 53.3% of LRP positive cases were in haematological remission at day 30 as compared to 100% of LRP negative cases (p=<0.05). Conclusions: Our study indicated that increased LRP expression at diagnosis in pediatric ALL predicts poor response to early treatment and hence can be used as a prognostic marker. However, larger prospective studies with longer follow up are needed, to understand the clinical relevance of drug resistance proteins.

In this paper several sufficient conditions for some classes of functions are investigated. The authors apply Jack's Lemma, to obtain this conditions. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for strongly starlike and convex p-valent functions of order ${\gamma}$ and type ${\beta}$, are also considered.

      • Multi-Objective Optimal Operation with Demand Management and Voltage Stability

        Due to the electric power liberalization, many power producers are entering into the deregulated power market. Most of the electrical power companies are introducing Renewable Energy Sources (RES), which will increase the power system uncertainty. Consequently, the underlyng uncertainty imposed by RES will increase the likelihood of voltage instability and voltage collapse. Also, fluctuations in supply and demand are increased by the introduction of renewable energies. On the other hand, Demand Response Program (DRP) is one of the potential solutions that reduces the power fluctuations. In this study, we proposed multi-objective optimal operation based Unit Commitment (UC) considering voltage stability and demand response. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results using the MATLAB.

        Geographical Differences in Wound Complication Rates Following the Sinus Tarsi Approach in Displaced Intra-articular Calcaneal Fractures: A Systematic Review of the Literature

        Background: The sinus tarsi approach (STA) has gained popularity for the treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures. No large studies comparing wound complications worldwide after STA surgery are available. The aim of this systematic review was to compare postoperative wound complication (POWC) and postoperative wound infection (POWI) rates following STA surgery between continents and countries and their differences in climate. Methods: A literature search was performed using the databases of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Studies published before January 1, 2000, including < 10 patients and written in a language other than English were excluded. Results: In total, 86 studies containing 4,392 surgeries via STA from 20 different countries were included. The mean POWC was 5.9% and the mean POWI was 4.4%. The highest median POWC rate was in North America (8.5%) and the lowest in South America (2.0%). No significant differences were found in the POWC and POWI rates between countries (p = 0.178 and p = 0.570, respectively), but significant differences were found between the POWC and POWI rates between continents (p = 0.011 and p = 0.036, respectively). The number of surgeries per year and climate differences, as represented by mean local temperature, were not correlated with both the POWC/POWI rates and functional outcome scores. Conclusions: Significant differences between the POWC and POWI rates were found between continents but not between individual countries. With a mean POWC of 5.9% and a mean POWI rate of 4.4%, STA has an intrinsic low risk for complications given the minimally invasive nature of the approach and is inevitably becoming the gold standard for calcaneal surgery.

        Assessing Social and Work Environmental Factors Towards Women Upward Career Development: An Empirical Study from Pakistan

        The goal of this research was to find the relationship between the work environment and societal issues that impede women’s advancement to senior management positions. The study included 500 women professionals from diverse firms in Pakistan’s business sector, of whom 100 were chosen as the sample size using a purposive sampling method. Experts confirmed the validity of the study tool, which was a questionnaire, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to verify its reliability (0.704–0.982). The model’s standardized regression coefficients suggested that social factors (0.298) were the most important factors determining women’s empowerment in terms of career development and that they were further influenced by factors related to the work environment (0.411). It was concluded that organizational rules for female employees assist them to maintain a balance between work and family, resulting in a less stressful working environment. The role of the social factor as a mediator is also thought to be important in maintaining a healthier work environment in companies. It was also determined that much more work needs to be done on promotional regulations, as well as gender-blind legislation so that women’s professional advancement is not limited to middle management.

        The effect of ball size on the hollow center cracked disc (HCCD) in Brazilian test

        Hollow center cracked disc (HCCD) in Brazilian test was modelled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked disc. The pre-existing edge cracks in the disc models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modelled samples. The effect of particle size on the hollow center cracked disc (HCCD) in Brazilian test were considered too. The results shows that Failure pattern is constant by increasing the ball diameter. Tensile cracks are dominant mode of failure. These crack initiates from notch tip, propagate parallel to loading axis and coalescence with upper model boundary. Number of cracks increase by decreasing the ball diameter. Also, tensile fracture toughness was decreased with increasing the particle size. In this research, it is tried to improve the understanding of the crack propagation and crack coalescence phenomena in brittle materials which is of paramount importance in the stability analyses of rock and concrete structures, such as the underground openings, rock slopes and tunnel construction.
