Although human activities in the World Wide Web are rapidly increasing due to the advent of many online services and applications, we still need to appraise how things such as a merchandise in a store or pictures in a museum receive attention in the real world. To measure people’s attention in the physical world, we propose a Sensor of Physical-world Attention using Lasers canning(SPAL). It is challenging to use alaser scanner because it provides only front-side circumference of any detected objects in a measurement area. Unlike cameras, a laser scanner poses no privacy problem because it does not recognize and record an in dividual. SPAL includes many important factors when calculating people’s attention, i.e., lingering time, direction of people, distance between people and a target object. To obtain such information for calculation, we develop three processing modules to extract information from raw data measured by a lasers canner. We define two attention metrics and two measurement models to compute people’s attention. To validate the proposed system, we implemented aprototype of SPAL and conducted experiments in the real-world environment. The results show that the proposed system is a good candidate for determining people’s attention.

Thermal imaging technique is useful for detecting 2-dimensional spatial distribution and temporal variation of temperature. Thermal images of foods during the cooking process and/or pulse heating process are observed for evaluating the quality of foods in the volume fabrications. Inhomogeneous temperature distribution of a pancake can be observed during the baking process. Water concentration of flour can be measured from temporal evaluation of thermal images.

Photoluminescence (PL) imaging is curried out using Cr doped spinel sensors at various temperatures for 2-dimensional fluorescence thermometer application. PL images can be clearly observed using a CCD camera and UV, green and/or blue LED illuminations. Brightness of PL images from Cr doped spinel sensor decrease with temperature up to 250 oC. PL imaging is suggested to be useful for 2-dimensional fluorescence thermometer applications.

Red colored photoluminescence (PL) images have been observed from Cr doped garnet, Y3Al5O12 (YAG) sensor using a CCD camera system. PL image from YAG sensor increases linearly with temperature from 25 to 250 oC. Temperature can be measured using PL image from Cr doped YAG sensor. Image processing techniques, such as line scanning, histogram and integration of brightness are effective for two-dimensional fluorescence thermometer application.

Temperature monitoring is essentially important for stable control of fabrication processes. In order to develop a convenient 2-dimensional temperature monitoring system using a thermo-paint, photoluminescence (PL) images are observed from the luminous paints at various temperatures. Commercially available and in-house modified luminous paints are evaluated for improving temperature sensitivity and stability of the thermo-paints. Temperature dependences of PL images from various luminous paints are reported for developing temperature monitoring procedure using a thermo-paint.

Spinel crystals (Cr doped MgAl2O4) with various Cr2O3 and MgO concentrations are grown using floating zone technique for fluorescence thermometer application. Temperature dependence of photoluminescence (PL) intensity is evaluated using spinel crystal and/or composite of spinel with silicone resin. PL intensity from spinel crystal and composite decreases linearly with temperature. Spenel crystal and composite are useful as sensor materials in fluorescence thermometer.
