Equilibrium studies of ternary systems containing some selected transition metal ions, triazoles and aromatic carboxylic acids

Mohamed Magdy Khalil,Rehab Khaled,Abd-Elatty Radalla,Fatma Qasem 한국화학공학회 2014 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.31 No.1

Solution equilibria of the binary and ternary complex systems of the divalent transition metal ions Cu2+,Ni2+, Zn2+, and Co2+ with 1,2,4-triazole (TRZ), 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (TRZSH), and 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (TRZAM)and aromatic carboxylic acids (phthalic, anthranilic, salicylic, and 5-sulfosalicylic acid) have been studied pH-metrically at (25.0±0.1) oC, and a constant ionic strength I=1×10−1 mol L−1 NaNO3 in an aqueous medium. The potentiometric titration curves show that binary and ternary complexes of these ligands are formed in solution. The stability constants of the different binary and ternary complexes formed were calculated on the basis of computer analysis of the titration data. The relative stability of the different ternary complex species is expressed in terms of Δ log K values, log X and R. S.% parameters. The effect of temperature of the medium on both the proton-ligand equilibria for TRZAM and phthalic acid and their metal-ligand equilibria with Cu2+, Ni2+, and Co2+ has been studied along with the corresponding thermodynamic parameters. The complexation behavior of ternary complexes is ascertained using conductivity measurements. In addition, the formation of ternary complexes in solution has been confirmed by using UV-visible spectrophotometry.

“In Here, Life Is Beautiful”: Social Critique in the Musical Films Cabaret and Chicago

ELDAKHAKHNY DINA MAGDY MOHAMED MOHAMED 문학과영상학회 2016 문학과영상 Vol.17 No.1

The American Jazz-era musical films Cabaret (1972) and Chicago (2002) have enjoyed immense popularity worldwide from their release up until the present. While some believe that musicals provide little beside light entertainment, music and dance, this paper demonstrates how the two musicals deliver biting and enduring social critique. To that end, the paper first tackles the cross-cutting technique or associative montage through which both musicals use the stage to comment on reality either by means of representation or juxtaposition. Next the paper highlights how society’s passivity and complacence in the face of the show it sees onstage make it culpable in the rise of fascism, corruption and increased materialism which were prevalent in the roaring twenties and thirties. The paper finally turns its attention to an example of agency and positive social change, namely the rebellion of the central female figures against traditional patriarchal norms, which is once again facilitated through the stage and the medium of the non-traditional and subversive Jazz music of the flappers era.

Effect of propolis supplementation and breed on growth performance, immunity, blood parameters and cecal microbiota in growing rabbits

        Al-Homidan Ibrahim,Fathi Moataz,Abdelsalam Magdy,Ebeid Tarek,Abou-Emera Osama,Mostafa Mohamed,El-Razik Mohamed Abd,Shehab-El-Deen Mohamed 아세아·태평양축산학회 2022 Animal Bioscience Vol.35 No.10

Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the potential effects of dietary supplemented propolis in two growing rabbit breeds on growth performance, immune response, blood parameters, carcass characteristics, and cecal microflora composition. Methods: A total of 90 growing rabbits aged 6 weeks from two breeds (V-line and Jabali) were randomly allocated to 3 dietary propolis experimental treatments. The experimental treatments consisted of a 2×3 factorial arrangement with two rabbit breeds and three levels of dietary propolis supplementation (0, 250 mg/kg, and 500 mg/kg). Each sub-treatment has 15 rabbits. The experimental period lasted six weeks. Results: There were no significant differences in growth performance and carcass characteristics due to propolis administration. Propolis supplementation at a high level significantly increased (linear; p<0.05) cellular-mediated immunity compared with the unsupplemented group. Furthermore, the rabbits receiving propolis exhibited a significant increase (linear and quadratic; p<0.03) in IgM immunoglobulins compared to the control. The current study provides further evidence that the dietary inclusion of propolis can significantly reduce pathogenic bacterial colonization in growing rabbits. The total count of microflora, E. coli, and Salmonella spp. was significantly lower (linear; p<0.01) in supplemented rabbit groups compared to the control group according to the microbiological analysis of cecal digesta. Based on breed effect, the results indicated that Jabali rabbits (local) performed better than V-line rabbits (foreign) in the majority of the studied traits. Conclusion: Dietary propolis is promising for further investigation into improving intestinal health and enhancing immunity in growing rabbits. Characterization of electron beam irradiated natural rubber/modified starch composites

        Magdy M. Senna,Rasha M. Mohamed,Amira N. Shehab-Eldin,Sabrnal El-Hamouly 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.5

The effects of electron beam irradiation on thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of natural rubber/starch blends were investigated. The results of thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of natural rubber was improved by the addition of modified starch and by irradiation. On the other hand, thermal stability of irradiated natural rubber and natural rubber/unmodified starch blends is lower than that of pure natural rubber. The tensile strength of natural rubber (2.01 MPa) was improved to 3.82 MPa with the addition of 5 phr unmodified starch. There was a further increase from 2.01 MPa to 6.44 MPa when 5 phr modified starch was used.

Prevalence of Eosinophilic Esophagitis in Adult Patients with Upper Gastrointestinal Symptoms in a Locality in Upper Egypt

        Magdy Fouad,Yasser Mahrous Fouad,Hamdy Ahmed Mokareb,Dalia Mohammed Abdel-Rehim 대한소화기내시경학회 2018 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.51 No.4

Background/Aims: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is gaining importance in the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) symptoms. Diagnosis is based on the clinical presentation of esophageal dysfunction and pathological findings in the absence of other causes oftissue eosinophilia. Our study was designed to evaluate EoE prevalence in patients with UGI symptoms in our locality (El-Minia, Egypt). Methods: This single-center, cross-sectional study recruited all patients with UGI symptoms who agreed for endoscopic evaluation. Esophageal biopsy samples were obtained and histological evaluation for the presence of eosinophils was performed for every patient. EoE was defined when at least 15 eosinophils were present in a single high-power field, in the absence of other causes of esophagealeosinophilia. Results: Between 2013 and 2015, 218 of 476 adult patients with UGI symptoms underwent upper endoscopy after giving consent. Amongthe 218 patients, only 4 (1.87%) had the diagnosis of EoE based on the presence of eosinophils in esophageal biopsies and exclusion ofother causes of esophageal eosinophilia. Three patients with EoE presented mainly with dysphagia (75%) and/or other UGI symptoms, such as heartburn. Conclusions: We observed a low prevalence of EoE in our locality. The diagnosis of EoE should be considered in patients withdysphagia and/or heartburn.

Torsional flexural steady state response of monosymmetric thin-walled beams under harmonic loads

Mohammed A. Hjaji,Magdi Mohareb 국제구조공학회 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.52 No.4

Starting with Hamilton’s variational principle, the governing field equations for the steady stateresponse of thin-walled beams under harmonic forces are derived. The formulation captures sheardeformation effects due to bending and warping, translational and rotary inertia effects and as well astorsional flexural coupling effects due to the cross section mono-symmetry. The equations of motion consistof four coupled differential equations in the unknown displacement field variables. A general closed formsolution is then developed for the coupled system of equations. The solution is subsequently used to developa family of shape functions which exactly satisfy the homogeneous form of the governing field equations. Asuper-convergent finite element is then formulated based on the exact shape functions. Key features of theelement developed include its ability to (a) isolate the steady state response component of the response tomake the solution amenable to fatigue design, (b) capture coupling effects arising as a result of sectionmono-symmetry, (c) eliminate spatial discretization arising in commonly used finite elements, (d) avoidingshear locking phenomena, and (e) eliminate the need for time discretization. The results based on the presentsolution are found to be in excellent agreement with those based on finite element solutions at a smallfraction of the computational and modelling cost involved.

Eccentric Versus Concentric Exercises in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis and Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy: A Randomized Comparative Study

        Mina Magdy Wahba,Mona Selim,Mohammed Moustafa Hegazy,Rasmia Elgohary,Mohammed Shawki Abdelsalam 대한재활의학회 2023 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine Vol.47 No.1

Objective To determine the efficacy of concentric vs. eccentric exercise in improving shoulder function, pain, and tendon characteristics for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and rotator cuff tendinopathy. Methods Forty patients with rheumatoid arthritis and rotator cuff tendinopathy were divided into either concentric or eccentric exercise groups, with 20 patients in each group. Patients received 12 sessions at a pace of 3 sessions per week. Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), the visual analogue scale (VAS), supraspinatus and subscapularis thickness, echo pixels, and the Disease Activity Score-28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS-28-ESR) were assessed at baseline and post-treatment. Results There was a significant difference between the concentric and eccentric groups regarding SPADI and VAS scores in favor of the eccentric group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding tendon thickness, echo pixels, or DAS-28-ESR. Conclusion Eccentric exercises were more effective than concentric exercises in improving shoulder function and pain intensity. However, neither of the two types of exercises was superior in improving tendon characteristics or disease activity.

Green tea ameliorates the side effects of the silver nanoparticles treatment of Ehrlich ascites tumor in mice

        Ahmed Magdy,Emad Sadaka,Nemany Hanafy,Mohammed A. El‑Magd,Nasr Allahloubi,Maged El Kemary 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2020 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.16 No.3

Background Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have anti-cancer effects with fewer side effects than standard chemotherapeutic agents, however, they exert oxidative stress-based adverse effects on normal cells and so their applications have raised concern about possible health and environmental risks. Objective We evaluated whether green tea extract (GTE), which contains potent antioxidants, could ameliorate AgNPs geno-, cyto-, and histotoxicities without decreasing their therapeutic potential against Ehrlich ascetic carcinoma (EAC). Results GTE enhanced the anti-cancer effect of AgNPs against EAC cells and ameliorated the genotoxic effect of AgNPs as indicated by lowering chromosomal aberrations and micronucleus frequencies. Additionally, GTE relieved most of degenerative histological changes induced by AgNPs. GTE restored the increased MDA and the decreased SOD, GPx and CAT serum levels induced by AgNPs to levels comparable to normal. The pre-treatment with GTE and AgNPs showed better improvement than the post-treatment strategy. Conclusions GTE can not only ameliorate AgNPs-induced adverse effects but also improve their anti-cancer effect against EAC. So, it could be useful in the treatment of liver dysfunction associated with AgNPs.

Recovery of Tin as Tin oxide nanoparticles from waste printed circuit boards for photocatalytic dye degradation

Dina Magdy Abdo,Sabah Mohamed Abdelbasir,Shakinaz Taha El-Sheltawy,Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim 한국화학공학회 2021 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.38 No.9

A simple eco-friendly process is proposed to retrieve tin from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) as tin oxide nanostructured powders. The WPCBs were leached in disodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (Na2- EDTA) chelating agent comparing results with acid leaching. Parameters affecting the leaching process such as sample particle size, pH, temperature, time, liquid/solid ratio, and concentration of Na2-EDTA were investigated. A 100% of Sn can be recovered by leaching in 0.1mol/L Na2-EDTA solution for 3 hours at 80 oC with optimum conditions of pH: 5, liquid/solid ratio: 30, particle size -0.07 mm, and constant stirring of 400 rpm. Kinetic data suggest a diffusion-controlled process as the rate-determining step for the Na2-EDTA extraction of tin from WPCBs with an activation energy of 15.28 KJ·mol-1. Selective precipitation of Sn as tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles (NPs) from leachant solution was performed via a simple route using sodium hydroxide. Characterization tests (XRD, FTIR, EDX, FE-SEM, and TEM) were made to confirm the morphology of the nanoparticles. The prepared SnO2 NPs, having a size range of 8-12nm, showed an excellent photocatalytic action towards methylene blue (MB) dye under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination with 90% efficiency after 180min and showed good reusability after five consecutive cycles.
