Search for strange tribaryons in the He4(K<i>stop</i>−,n<sup>π±</sup>) reaction

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We have recently reported on an indication of the strange tribaryon state, S<SUP>+</SUP>, with a mass M∼3140 MeV/<SUP>c2</SUP> and width Γ<23 MeV/<SUP>c2</SUP>, in the neutron time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum of the He4(K<I>stop</I>−,n<SUP>π±</SUP>) reaction of the KEK-PS E471 experiment in a search for the deeply bound narrow <SUP>K−</SUP>ppn (total isospin T=0) state. In an attempt to confirm the state and search for other possible T=0, 1 tribaryonic states, we have re-measured the neutron energy spectrum of the same reaction in the KEK-PS E549 experiment with an upgraded setup for which the TOF resolution was improved 1.5 times and the statistics was increased 6 times. However, in the neutron spectra, we find such a smooth distribution that we conclude the state is either not so strong to stick out of the inclusive background or too broad to be identified as a distinct peak. We estimated the upper limits of the formation probability of the possible tribaryonic state for three widths, 0, 20, and 40 MeV/<SUP>c2</SUP>. The obtained upper limit (95% CL) for a state as narrow as 20 MeV/<SUP>c2</SUP> is at most 1% per stopped kaon over the wide mass range of 3000–3200 MeV/<I>c</I><SUP>2</SUP>, while it reaches to 4∼5% at around 3140 MeV/<I>c</I><SUP>2</SUP> for Γ⩾40 MeV/<SUP>c2</SUP>, implying the possible existence of unknown processes including tribaryonic formation.</P>

Color and its stability in venison, longissumus dorsi (LD) and quadriceps femoris (QF) muscles, from 8 wild Cervus nippon yesoensis (Japanese Yeso Deer) were investigated by means of the CIE L$^{*}a{*}b{*}$ measurement and autoxidation rate recorded using partially purified myoglobin. It was observed a common feature of the change of three mean values($L^{*}$, $a^{*}$ and $b^{*}$) in both LD and QF that mean value increased at 1 or 2 day post-mortem and then decreased during storage. The differences between 1 and 7 days was the largest in $a^{*}$ value than those in $L^{*}$ and $b^{*}$ values. The mean differences among storage days were only significant in $a^{*}$ except for $b^{*}$ of LD. It was same tendency that the mean difference of CIE $L^{*}$, $a^{*}$ and $b^{*}$ values during refrigerator storage was larger in $a^{*}$ than both in $L^{*}$ and $b^{*}$ reported in beef(Sekikawa et al., 1995) and venison(Stevenson et al., 1989) during storage. The smaller $a^{*}$ value was indicated that bright red of meat changed to dull red, brown red causing met-Mb formation. To compare of color stability with respects to the Mb autoxidation rate, we measured this rate of deer and horse muscles, because horse Mb was considered to have the fastest autoxidation rate among domestic animals, and we used crude Mb and pH 6.0, which might be reflected to the intact meat. Mean value of the autoxidation rate measured in this study in deer was 0.037 and that was 0.026 in horse(sigma). Although there was no significant mean difference and were different Mb purity between deer(A409/A 280 nm = 4.0) and horse(5.6), in generally Mb purity was the higher and the faster autoxidation rate, but this rate in deer was faster than in horse. These results might indicate that venison meat discolors at faster rate compared with beef.

<P>In this review, we discuss the progress of emerging dry processes for nanoscale fabrication. Experts in the fields of plasma processing have contributed to addressing the increasingly challenging demands in achieving atomic-level control of material selectivity and physicochemical reactions involving ion bombardment. The discussion encompasses major challenges shared across the plasma science and technology community. Focus is placed on advances in the development of fabrication technologies for emerging materials, especially metallic and intermetallic compounds and multiferroic, and two-dimensional (2D) materials, as well as state-of-the-art techniques used in nanoscale semiconductor manufacturing with a brief summary of future challenges. A voltage-control spintronics memory (VoCSM) which has a potential of low energy consumption uses the spin-Hall effect (SHE) and the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect for its write operation. In this work, the relationship between the critical switching current (Icsw) and the SHE electrode thickness (tN) is investigated in the range of 5 nm < tN < 8 nm. In the fabrication process, we develop highly-selective patterning process to stop MTJ etching precisely on the surface of the SHE electrode. Using the technique, Icsw is reduced by half as tN is varied from 8 nm to 5 nm, and Icsw of 112 mA at 20 ns write current pulse is obtained for MTJ size of 50 × 150 nm2 on Ta(2 nm)/TaB (3 nm) electrode. The results indicate that the decrease in the SHE electrode thickness is a promised method to reduce Icsw, which leads VoCSM to a low-energy-consumption device.

<P> We have measured a proton energy from the stopped K<SUP>-</SUP> reaction on <SUP>4</SUP> He to search for strange tribaryon states at KEK 12 GeV PS. No statistically significant signal was observed in the missing mass spectrum obtained by the inclusive <SUP>4</SUP> He ( stopped K<SUP>-</SUP>, p) measurement. Upper limits of the formation branching ratio at the 95 % C.L. were derived for neutral tribaryon states with strangeness -1 to be (0.4 ~ 6) × 10<SUP>-4</SUP>, (0.2 ~ 6) × 10<SUP>-3</SUP> and (0.06 ~ 5) × 10<SUP>-2</SUP>/(stopped K<SUP>-</SUP>) for assumed natural widths of 0, 20 and 40 MeV /c<SUP>2</SUP>, respectively. </P>

Precision measurement of the 3d->2p x-ray energy in kaonic <sup>4</sup>He

We have measured the Balmer-series x-rays of kaonic <SUP>4</SUP>He atoms using novel large-area silicon drift x-ray detectors in order to study the low-energy K@?-nucleus strong interaction. The energy of the 3d->2p transition was determined to be 6467+/-3(stat)+/-2(syst) eV. The resulting strong-interaction energy-level shift is in agreement with theoretical calculations, thus eliminating a long-standing discrepancy between theory and experiment.

<P>We report on the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity of the heavy fermion compounds CeNiGe<SUB>2−<I>x</I></SUB>Si<SUB><I>x</I></SUB> (<img ALIGN='MIDDLE' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/16/46/018/cm185233ieqn1.gif' ALT='0\leq x \leq 1 '/>). Compounds with <I>x</I><1 show antiferromagnetic order, which with increasing <I>x</I> shifts toward lower temperature owing to increased exchange coupling between the localized 4f magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Eventually, the magnetic order almost becomes absent, for <I>x</I> = 1. An anomaly observed in the specific heat is well interpreted by the Kondo model for a degenerate impurity spin <I>J</I> = 1/2 in the Coqblin–Schrieffer limit. A coherence peak indicative of the formation of a Kondo lattice is found in the electrical resistivity, whose features are consistent with the results for the specific heat. Interestingly, there is a significant deviation from Fermi-liquid behaviour at the critical concentration <I>x</I> = 1. This deviation is attributed to a quantum phase transition in a model with two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations.</P>
