        Surface sediment geochemistry for understanding the recent sedimentary environment in northwestern Karnataka, south India

        Geochemical study of 195 stream sediment samples (in less than 75 μm grain size) distributed in parts of Belgaum, Dharwad, and Uttar Kanada districts (bounded by latitudes from15°15'00'' to 15°30'00'' and longitudes from 74°30'00'' to 74°45'00'') were studied for the major oxide, trace and rare earth element content. The objective of this study is to understand the recent sedimentary environment by establishing the generalized climatic conditions, chemical weathering, sediment sorting and recycling, sediment sources, and the tectonic setting of the study area. Geochemical signatures of the sediments indicate a semi-arid to the moist climate in the study area. Geochemical proxies show that annual rainfall in the study area varies from 378 to 692 mm, higher in the western part compared to that in the eastern side. The chemical index of alteration (67.70–94.01) and chemical index of weathering (76.24–97.37) collectively suggest moderate to high chemical weathering. Studied samples show a wide variation in major oxides and trace elements. Fe2O3, MnO, K2O, P2O5, Rb, Zr, and Sc display a positive correlation with Al2O3 confirming their possible hydraulic fractionation. Zr/Sc vs. Th/Sc plot and correlation between CIA vs. Al2O3 indicate strong sediment recycling and sorting. Bulk geochemistry data suggests the involvement of granite and other felsic rocks, intermediate and mafic rocks as the sources of surface sediments. Our observations are very well matching with the geology of the area. Major and trace element set of discrimination diagrams demarcates the passive margin settings for the studied samples, except for a few samples plotting into an active continental margin tectonic settings.

        Investigations of thermoelectric properties of different gallium nitride polytypes through first-principles approach

        In recent years, exploring new polytypes of III-V semiconductors has been widely practiced for the development of thermoelectric devices of high efficiency. In this work, the thermoelectric properties of new polytypes, namely the wurtzite(wz), Berrylium oxide (β-BeO), Nickel arsenide (NiAs), Silicon carbide (SiC), and Titanium arsenide (TiAs) phases of GaN have been investigated using the first-principles approaches. It is found that the p-type of doping induces enhancement of the power factors (PFs) and figure-of-merits (zT) of the GaN polytypes. The optimal p-type doping for PFs has been recognized as - 1.67 eV for wz-GaN, - 1.78 eV for β-BeO-GaN, - 1.33 eV for NiAs-GaN, - 1.58 eV for SiC-GaN, and - 1.48 eV for TiAs-GaN. These optimal p-type doping has induced the room-temperature PFs as high as 13.75 × 1010 W/mK2s recorded for wz-GaN, 13.61 × 1010 W/mK2s for β-BeO-GaN, 41.14 × 1010 W/mK2s for NiAs-GaN, 14.06 × 1010 W/mK2s for SiC-GaN, and 49.21 × 1010 W/mK2s for TiAs-GaN. Furthermore, the PFs of the GaN polytypes are enhanced by increasing the temperature. Due to such significant PFs, the zT values corresponding to p-type doping have been recorded as 1.013 for wz-GaN, 0.998 for β-BeO-GaN, 1.00 for NiAs-GaN, 1.015 for SiC-GaN, and 0.999 for TiAs-GaN. Moreover, we comprehensively discussed the electrical and thermal conductivities and Seebeck coefficients (S) for the predicted GaN polytypes. The results of the thermoelectric properties presented in this study reveal the predicted GaN polytypes may find interesting applications in thermoelectric devices for clean energy harvesting.

        Six generations (P$_1$, P$_2$, F$_1$, BC$_1$, BC$_2$ and F$_2$) of four bivoltine silkworm crosses (SKAU-R-1 ${\times}$ Yakwei, SKAU-R-6 ${\times}$ Yakwei, CSR$_2$ ${\times}$ CSR$_4$ and SH$_{6}$${\times}$ NB$_4$D$_2$) were evaluated in a completely randomized block design with 5 replications for each treatment. The generation mean 2 in respect of 3 metric traits (single cocoon weight, single shell weight, and shell ratio %), were subjected to Cavallis joint scaling test. Additive dominance model was found to be adequate in CSR$_2$${\times}$CSR$_4$ and SH$_{6}$${\times}$ NB$_4$D$_2$ for single cocoon weight and shell weight and SKAU-R-6 ${\times}$ Yakwei for shell ratio(%). Whereas, in rest of the crosses epistasis was evident in the traits under investigation. Magnitude of additive gene effect (d) was greater than dominance(h) in SH$_{6}$${\times}$NB$_4$D$_2$ and SKUA-R-6${\times}$Yakwei for shell ratio (%) and in CSR$_2$${\times}$ CSR$_4$ for shell weight. Thus selection for these traits in early segregating generations of these crosses would be effective for obtaining considerable genetic gain. gain.
