Magnolol induces apoptosis via caspase-independent pathways in non-small cell lung cancer cells

        Jong-Rung Tsai,Inn-Wen Chong,Yung-Hsiang Chen,Jhi-Jhu Hwang,Wei-Hsian Yin,Hsiu-Lin Chen,Shah-Hwa Chou,Chien-Chih Chiu,Po-Len Liu 대한약학회 2014 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.37 No.4

Magnolol, a hydroxylated biphenyl agent isolatedfrom herbal planet Magnolia officinalis, is a componentof traditional Asian herbal teas. It has been reported tohave anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-canceractivity. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines(A549, H441 and H520) and normal human bronchialepithelial cells (HBECs) were used to evaluate the cytotoxiceffect of magnolol. We show that magnolol inhibitedcellular proliferation, increased DNA fragmentation, anddecreased mitochondrial membrane potential in all NSCLCcells, but had no cytotoxic effect on HBECs. Magnololtriggered the release of pro-apoptotic proteins: Bid, Bax and cytochrome c from mitochondria, but did not activatethe caspase-3, -8, and -9, suggesting that magnolol inducesapoptosis of NSCLC cell lines via a caspase-independentpathway. The caspase-independent pathway is mediatedthrough the activation of nuclear translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor, endonuclease G and cleaved poly(-ADP-ribose) polymerase, which played important roles inmediating cell death. Furthermore, magnolol inhibitedPI3K/AKT and ERK1/2 activity, but up-regulated p38 andJNK activity in A549 cell lines. The results of this studyprovided a basis for understanding and developing magnololas a novel treatment of NSCLC.

Clinical Features and Computed Tomography Characteristics of Non-Klebsiella pneumoniae Liver Abscesses in Elderly (>65 Years) and Nonelderly Patients

        Chih-Weim Hsiang,Wei-Chou Chang,Chang-Hsien Liu,Hsiu-Lung Fan,Kai-Hsiung Ko,Chih-Yung Yu,Hong-Hau Wang,Wen-I Liao,Hsian-He Hsu 연세대학교의과대학 2015 Yonsei medical journal Vol.56 No.2

Purpose: To compare the clinical and computed tomography (CT) appearances of liver abscesses caused by non-Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterial pathogens in elderly and nonelderly patients. Materials and Methods: Eighty patients with confirmed non-Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscesses (non-KPLAs) were enrolled and dividedinto two age groups: elderly (age ≥65 years, n=42) and nonelderly (age <65 years, n=38). Diagnosis of non-KPLA was established by pus and/or blood culture. We compared clinical presentations, outcomes, and CT characteristics of the two groups, and performed multivariate analysis for significant variables and receiver-operating-characteristic analysis to determine the cutoff value of abscess diameter for predicting non-KPLA. Results: Elderly patients with non-KPLA were associatedwith a longer hospital stay (p<0.01). Regarding etiology, biliary sources had a strong association in the elderly group (p<0.01), and chronic liver diseases were relatedto the nonelderly group (p<0.01). Non-KPLAs (52.5%) tended to show a large, multiloculated appearance in the elderly group and were associated with bile duct dilatation (p<0.01), compared with the nonelderly group. The abscess diameter (cutoff value, 5.2 cm; area under the curve, 0.78) between the two groups was predicted. In multivariate analysis, underlying biliary tract disease [odds ratio (OR), 3.58, p<0.05], abscess diameter (OR, 2.40, p<0.05), and multiloculated abscess (OR, 1.19, p<0.01) independently predicted elderly patients with non-KPLA. Conclusion:In the elderly patients with non-KPLA, a large, multiloculated abscess with a diameter greater than 5.2 cm was the predominant imaging feature.

Determining optimal number of cores in a submarine power cable

        Hsieh Meng-Chang,Chen Bang-Fuh,Wang Yanyang,Chang Hsun-Cheng,Liu Wen-Hsiu,Hsu Hung-Lin 대한조선학회 2022 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.14 No.1

Submarine power cables must be reinforced and must possess suitable mechanical properties to meet operational requirements for complex marine environments. This study numerically investigated the mechanical properties of submarine power cables under tensile, torsional, and compressive loading. The optimal number of cores was determined according to the variation in tensile and torsional stiffness with radial compressive pressure. As the radial compressive pressure increased, the tensile and torsional stiffness of the four- and five-core cable models decreased marginally compared with those of the threecore cable model; thus, the five-core cable model was superior to the two-, three-, and four-core cable models in terms of radial deformation and contact stress. The two-core cable model was superior to the three-, four-, and five-core cable models in terms of tensile and torsional strength. The results of this study can serve as a reference in the design of submarine power cables.
