Catalytic properties of Zirconium phosphonates layered structure (ZPLS) catalysts with organic sulfonic acid pendant groups have been studied. The NaOH titration demonstrated the presence of sulfouic acid groups. The ZPLS contained acid sites per weight similar to or slightly less than those for catiun exchanged resins. the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate and the esterification of acetic acid with ethanol were studied as lest reactions. Accessibility of the reactants to the acid sites present in the interltyer spacing of ZPLS was a determining factor for the activity. Thus the activity depended on the ease of swellin and particle size of the ZPLS.

Flexoelectricity is emerging as a fascinating means for exploring the physical properties of nanoscale materials. Here, we demonstrated the unusual coupling between electronic transport and the mechanical strain gradient in a dielectric epitaxial thin film. Utilizing the nanoscale strain gradient, we showed the unique functionality of flexoelectricity to generate a rectifying diode effect. Furthermore, using conductive atomic force microscopy, we found that the flexoelectric effect can govern the local transport characteristics, including spatial conduction inhomogeneities, in thin-film epitaxy systems. Consideration of the flexoelectric effect will improve understanding of the charge conduction mechanism at the nanoscale and may facilitate the advancement of novel nanoelectronic device design.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Zirconium phosphonates layered structure(ZPLS) materials with various organic pendant groups have been synthesized. Their physical properties were investigated by means of SEM, BET, XRD, TGA/DTA and FT-IR. These properties, crystallinity in particular, depended strongly on preparation condition and the nature of the pendant. In general, samples with a sulfonic acid pendant were not as crystalline as the carboxylicacidanalogs. Crystalline samples exhibite daplate like morphology as commonly observed for Layered structure materials. Interlayer spacing of these materials was roughly proportional to the size of the pendant. In comparison with a conventional cation exchanged resin(Amberlyst 15), the layered structures with a sulfonic acid pendant showed similar IR characteristics, but much better thermal stability.

A surface diffusion model with diffusional interference has been presented for the analysis of multicomponent adsorption of phenols by activated carbon. Surface diffusion coefficients for multicomponent adsorptions were estimated from the relationship between the surface diffusion coefficient of each species and the surface coverage. The diffusional interference coefficients, W_(ij) was determined from experimental counter-adsorption data. The numerical values of W_(ij) were in the range of 0.4-0.9, which show that the introduction of diffusional interference is necessary to analyze multicomponent counter-adsorptions properly. The proposed model successfully simulates the behaviour of phenols-activated carbon system in a batch absorber.
Azacytidine pretreatment induces chemosensitivity in MCF7 breast cancer cells to doxorubicin

Chemoresistance is one of the main problems to treat different kinds of cancers or cancer cells. Therefore, it is necessary to find out the strategies to make the cancer cells sensitive to chemotherapy along with optimal dosage of drugs. We examined sensitivity of MCF7 cells through pretreating with an epigenetic modulator, azacytidine (AzaC) to doxorubicin (Dox). The cells were treated with 5 and 10 mM of AzaC for a week, subsequently with 50, 100 and 500 nM of doxorubicin for 24 and 48h. It was found that pretreatment of AzaC significantly enhance the sensitivity of MCF7 cells to Dox, inducing cell death. After 24h 15% cells underwent apoptosis in 500 nM dox treatment group while 23.4% cells death occurred in AzaC pre treatment group. After 48h MCF7 cells treated with Dox showed 19.0% cell death while AzaC sensitized cells showed 50.0% cells death when exposed to 500 nM of Dox for 48h. Western blot analysis showed the upregulations in the expression of bax, caspase-3, caspase-9 and p53 in AzaC-sensitized MCF7 cells treated with Dox as compared to those treated with only Dox. There was no clear indication for pro-apoptosis genes in the cells treated with individual drugs. These results showed that pretreatment with the epigenetic modulator significantly increased the sensitivity of MCF7 cells to Dox. Therefore it is concluded that demethylation event might enhance the activity of DNA intercalating agents to induce DNA damage in breast cancer cells.
