Nonparametric estimation of regression level sets using kernel plug-in estimator

        T. Laloë,R. Servien 한국통계학회 2013 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.42 No.3

Let (X, Y) be a random pair taking values in Rd×J, where J ⊂ R is supposed to be bounded. We propose a plug-in estimator of the level sets of the regression function r of Y on X,using a kernel estimator of r. We consider an error criterion defined by the volume of the symmetrical difference between the real and estimated level sets. We state the consistency of our estimator, and we get a rate of convergence equivalent to the one obtained by Cadre (2006) for the density function level sets.

Evaluation of Serum Zonulin and Occludin Levels in Bipolar Disorder

        Zengil Sertaç,Laloğlu Esra 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.4

Objective The etiology of bipolar disorder (BD) is still not fully understood. Little is currently known about the relationship between the interaction the gastrointestinal system and brain function and BD. Zonulin is the only known physiological modulator of tight junctions and is a biomarker for intestinal permeability (IP). Occludin is an integral transmembrane tight junction protein involved in the maintenance and assembly of such junctions. The current study aims to determine whether zonulin and occludin levels are altered in BD and whether they can serve as clinical biomarkers of disease. Methods Forty-four patients with BD and 44 healthy controls were included in this study. The Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) was used to determine the severity of manic symptoms, while the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was used to determine the severity of depressive symptoms, and the Brief Functioning Rating Scale (FAST) to assess functionality. Venous blood samples were taken from all participants and serum zonulin and occludin levels were measured. Results The mean serum zonulin and occludin levels of the patients were significantly higher compared to the healthy control group. There was no difference between manic, depressive, and euthymic patients in terms of zonulin and occludin levels. There was no correlation between the total number of attacks, duration of disease, YMRS, HDRS, FAST scores, and zonulin and occludin levels in the patient group. The groups were divided into three according to body mass index as normal, overweight, and obese. Zonulin and occludin levels increased as body mass index increased and were highest in the obese group. Conclusion The study shows that zonulin and occludin levels in BD increase independently of the disease stage. Consideration of the role of IP in the pathogenesis of BD may be helpful in determining the appropriate treatment modality.

Variability of Stem-Base Infestation and Coexistence of Fusarium spp. Causing Crown Rot of Winter Wheat in Serbia

        Radivoje Jevtić,Nemanja Stošić,Vesna Župunski,Mirjana Lalošević,Branka Orbović 한국식물병리학회 2019 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.35 No.6

Investigations related with factors influencing root and crown rot are rare and mainly related to farming practice and soil management. The main objective of this study was to examine broader range of factors influencing stem-base infestation of winter wheat in the field conditions. The effect of spatial distribution of infected plants on disease index (DIs) assessments was also investigated. Analysis of factors influencing DIs of crown rot of wheat demonstrated significant influence of the growing seasons (P < 0.001) and extreme fluctuations in winter temperatures (P < 0.001). In addition to that, localities together with their interaction with the growing season also significantly influenced DIs (P < 0.001). Aggregation of infected plants influenced variability of DI estimations, and it was pointed out that more extensive investigation should be conducted on broad range of DI in order to establish sampling method giving uniform sampling precision. Fusarium graminearum was shown to be predominant Fusarium species in Serbia (72.6%) using sequence-characterized amplified region analysis. Interestingly F. oxysporum was isolated in higher frequencies (27.4%) than it was reported in the literature. Given that there were no reports on the diversity of Fusarium species causing crown rot of wheat in Serbia, this study presents first report on this important subject. It also indicated that more attention should be focused on combined effects of abiotic and biotic factors influencing stem-base infestation of winter wheat. This knowledge will contribute to better understanding of factors influencing root and crown rot of wheat which would ensure sustainable disease management in the future.

Characterization of a carbon black rubber Poisson’s ratio based on optimization technique applied in FEA data fit

Debora Francisco Lalo,Marcelo Greco,Matias Meroniuc 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.76 No.5

The paper presents a study regarding rubber compressibility behavior. The objective is to analyze the effect of compression degree of rubber on its mechanical properties and propose a new methodology based on reverse engineering to predict compressibility degree based on uniaxial stretching test and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In general, rubbers are considered to be almost incompressible and Poisson’s ratio is close to 0.5. Since this property is intimately related to the rubber packing density, little changes in Poisson’s ratio can lead to significant changes regarding mechanical behavior. The deviatory hyperelastic constants were obtained through experimental data fitting by least squares method for the most relevant constitutive models implemented in commercial software Abaqus, such as: Neo-Hooke, Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden, Yeoh and Arruda-Boyce, whereas the hydrostatic part was determined through an optimization algorithm implemented in the Abaqus environment by Python scripting. The simulation results presented great influence of the Poisson’s ratio in the rubber specimen mechanical behavior mainly for high strain levels. A conventional pure volumetric compression test was also carried out in order to compare the results obtained by the proposed methodology.

Serum bilirubin as a prognostic marker in patients with acute decompensated heart failure

( Jayakrishna Chintanaboina ),( Matthew S Haner ),( Arjinder Sethi ),( Nimesh Patel ),( Walid Tanyous ),( Alexander Lalos ),( Sameer Pancholy ) 대한내과학회 2013 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.28 No.3

Background/Aims: Several prognostic markers for heart failure (HF) have been determined but the importance of liver function tests (LFTs) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic significance, if any, of abnormal LFTs in acute decompensated HF. Methods: All adult patients (> 18 years of age) who were admitted to a community hospital with a diagnosis of acute decompensated HF during the period January 2008 to December 2009 were identified. Exclusion criteria included acute coronary syndrome, active hepatobiliary disease, renal failure (serum creatinine ≥ 2 mg/dL), and malignancy. The primary end point was readmission secondary to acute exacerbation of HF. The Cox proportional hazard model was used for statistical analyses. Results: Univariate analysis showed that serum total bilirubin (TB, p < 0.01), serum B-type natriuretic peptide (p < 0.05), ejection fraction (EF, p < 0.05), and heart rate (p < 0.05) were significant predictors of hospital readmission secondary to acute decompensated HF. Multivariate analysis showed that high serum TB (> 1.3 mg/dL) on admission was an independent predictor (p < 0.05) of hospital readmission secondary to HF. The ‘at-risk’ group.patients with serum TB > 1.3 mg/dL and/or EF < 35% on admission.had a readmission rate that was 87% ± 20% (p < 0.05) higher than those with neither criterion. Conclusions: In patients with acute decompensated HF, elevated serum TB on admission with or without low EF (< 35%) predicts a worse prognosis and early future readmission, secondary to HF.
