A 14-year-old male pomeranian was present with swollen left ear. The swelling occurred from base to apex of pinna. Otitis externa persisted for two years. Hematological and serum biochemistry values were not remarkable. The surgery treatment was the most appropriate method among indwelling drain, surgical, and steroid treatment in the aural hematoma because the dog was very sensitive to touching pinna and the size of aural hematoma. Longitudinal incision was applied after general anesthesia. Cefovecin was injected to prevent secondary infection. The outcome of surgery was good. There was no evidence of recurrence for one year.

A Shih-tzu(8-year-old, castrated male) was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with the history of relapsing pruritus, recurrent dermatitis. On the physical examination, generalized erythema, otitis externa, alopecia and lichenification were observed. Using Favrot's criteria for diagnishing atopic dermatitis, 7 criteria were satisfied out of 8 criteria. After treatment for infection, intradermal skin test was performed(positive allergen : Df, Dp). And then immunotherapy was performed, but clinical signs were not getting better. Next treatment of glucocorticoid shown little improvement of clinical signs, and adverse effect(diarrhea) was shown after cyclosporine application. So application of leflunomide which is used for human atopic dermatitis treatment in some case was planned. After 6 months of application of leflunomide, clinical signs were decreased gradually.

A 10 month-old Yorkshire Terrier was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with the history of lethargy, bile pigment in urine and anorexia. Blood smear showed Heinz body, polychromatocytosis, schistocytosis, anisocytosis, which were the results from the oxidative injury. Hematology demonstrated a moderate anemia(PCV 22.4%, reference rage 35-55%), which was regeneration based on the degree of RPI (4.03, reference rage > 1). Serum biochemistry demonstrated mild elevation in total bilrubin, and mild decrease in total protein and albumin concentration. A diagnosis of Heinz body hemolytic anemia secondary to onion ingestion was made and treated with fluid therapy, oxygen and antioxidant drugs. The dog recovered without any complication.

A 11-year-old Yorkshire terrier anesthetized for computed tomography. The dog showed cyanosis and syncope during postanesthetic recovery, therefore drug administrated parenterally. Goose-honking was noticed after full recovery. As a result of survey radiography and fluoroscopy, grade 4 tracheal collapse was diagnosed. Prescription for the dog was oral administration of hydrocodone 0.22 mg/kg. theophylline 20 mg/kg, prednisone 0.5 mg/kg, amoxicillin 22 mg/kg and chlorpheniramine 2 mg/kg twice a day for 3 days. A 10-year-old Pomeranian was diagnosed as grade 2 traceal collapse at the local animal hospital 2 years before being referred to the veterinary teaching hospital of Chungnam National University. On physical examination, goose-honking, coughing and intermittent open-mouth breathing. Tracheal narrowing was observed on survey einradiography and fluoroscopy. Oral administration of theophylline 13 mg/kg, enrofloxacin 5 mg/kg, chlropheniramine 0.5 mg/kg twice a day was prescribed for 2 weeks.
Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Ullung-do Island

Ullung-do is a solitary island in the East Sea of Korea. During October 1972∼June 1973, a total of 695 among 27,085 islanders was surveyed on the infection of intestinal parasites by the modified MIFC method (Cho et al., 1972). The results are summarized as follows: 1. Of 695 specimen examined, male was 367, and female numbered 328. The total positives for intestinal helminths were 408 (58.7%); Ascaris lumbricoides 39.4%, Trichuris trichivra 33.8%, hookworm 0.6%, Trichostrongylus orientalis 0.9%, Enterobius vermicularis 0.2%, Clonorchis sinensis 0.4% and Taenia species 0.9%. 2. The total positives for intestinal protozoa were 173(25.2%); Entamoeba histolytica 5.5%, Entamoeba coli 19.1%, Endolimax nana 3.2%. Iodamoeba bvtschlii 0.1%, Giar dia lamblia 2.9% and Chilomastix mesnili 0.3%. 3. The intestinal helminths and protozoa were more prevalent in female than in male. Age group of 40 ∼49 years showed the highest infection tate whereas the group of less than 10 years revealed lower rate. 4. Incidence of intestinal parasites in this island was relatively lower than that of the other islands and rural inland areas in Korea.

<P>We present a metal-ion-chelating organogel electrolyte, thermally gelated within cells, to solve the problems triggered by metal dissolution from cathodes of lithium ion batteries. The organogel significantly improved the capacity retention of lithium manganese oxide spinel during cycling. The organogel mitigated metal deposition on anodes by capturing metal ions (anode protection). Interestingly, the organogel inhibited metal dissolution by keeping dissolved metal ions highly concentrated around the cathode surface (cathode protection by Le Chatelier's principle).</P>
<i>TGFBI</i> gene mutations in a Korean population with corneal dystrophy

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>To investigate the clinical and genetic features of Korean patients with corneal dystrophies associated with mutations in the human transforming growth factor-β-induced (<I>TGFBI</I>) gene.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>In this study, 387 subjects (71 families and 89 individuals - 268 patients having <I>TGFBI</I> corneal dystrophies and 119 normal relatives) were assessed. All subjects underwent a complete ophthalmologic evaluation, including biomicroscopic inspection and dilated fundus examination. As a control, 100 individuals without corneal disease were selected from the general population. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing were used to screen for mutations in <I>TGFBI</I>.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>All subjects recruited exhibited a range of corneal dystrophies, including Thiel-Behnke corneal dystrophy (TBCD, R555Q; 6 families and 4 individuals), granular corneal dystrophy type 2 (GCD2, R124H; 61 families and 80 individuals), lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD; 4 families and 5 individuals; 7 with type 1 [R124C], and 2 with a variant [L527R, P542R]). The disease showed an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern in all families.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>R124H in GCD2 was the most common mutation. GCD1 and Reis-Bucklers corneal dystrophy were not found. In the GCD2 patients there were a large number of laser refractive surgery-induced corneal opacities. A spontaneous R124H mutation was confirmed in an already mutated allele that resulted in a change from a heterozygous into a homozygous form. Also, a novel mutation, P527R, was identified in LCD.</P>

<P>Photochemical reactions of <I>N</I>-trimethylsilylmethyl-substituted uracil, pyridone and pyrrolidone derivatives were carried out to determine if silicone containing substituents have an impact on excited state reaction profiles. The results show that ultraviolet irradiation of <I>N</I>-trimethylsilylmethyl substituted uracils in the presence of substituted alkenes leads to efficient formation of both dimeric and cross [2+2]-cycloaddition products. Qualitatively similar observations were made in a study of the photochemistry of <I>N</I>-trimethylsilylmethyl-2-pyridone. The combined results demonstrate that [2+2]-photocycloaddition is a more efficient excited state reaction pathway for the uracil and pyridone substrates as compared to other processes, such as ylide-forming trimethylsilyl group C-to-O migration. Finally, photoreactions of <I>N</I>-trimethylsilylmethyl-2-pyrrolidone in solutions containing dipolarophiles, such as methyl acrylate, lead to the formation of the desilylation product, <I>N</I>-methyl-2-pyrrolidone by way of a simple, non-ylide generating, protodesilylation process. In addition, observations were made which show that orbital symmetry allowed photocycloreversion reactions of dimeric uracil derivatives, involving cyclobutane ring splitting, to take place. These processes, which lead to the formation of monomeric uracils, appear to be stimulated by the presence of electron donor groups on the cyclobutane ring, a likely result of a new SET promoted cyclobutane ring cleavage pathway. Histoacryl을 이용한 분쇄 골절된 안면골 골편들의 재조합

It is not uncommon to encounter multiple bone fragments during open reduction of facial bone fractures. When these fragments are few and their sizes large, there is no problem. But multiple, small, and thin bone fragments are difficult to handle, making accurate reduction with interfragmentary wires very difficult. This is frequently encountered in fractures of the anterior maxillary wall, orbital floor, orbital roof, and frontal sinus. In this study, 10 patients who sustained facial fractures with multiple, small, and thin fragments were treated with tissue adhesive(N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate). Post-operative 3 dimensional computer assisted tomography(CT) scans demonstrated an excellent reconstruction following this technique.
