Incidence of Wolbachia and Cardinium Endosymbionts in the Osmia Community in Korea

Sex ratio distorting endosymbionts induce reproductive anomalies in their arthropod hosts. They have recently been paid much attention as firstly texts of evolution of host-symbiont relationships and secondly potential biological control agents to control arthropod pests. Among such organisms, Wolbachia and Cardinium bacteria are well characterized. This study aims at probing such bacteria in the Osmia community to evaluate their potential utilization to control arthropod pests. Among 17 PCR tested species, Osmia cornifrons and a parasitic fly are infected with Wolbachia and a mite species is infected with Cardinium. Phylogenetic tree analyses suggest that horizontal transfer of the bacteria occurred between phylogenetically distant hosts.

롯데그룹은 2006년도부터 본격적으로 여성인재 채용에 노력을 기울이기 시작한 이래 한국 기업 최초로 남성육아휴직 의무화, 여성 육아휴직 2년 부여, 다양성 헌장 배포 등 여성이 일하기 좋은 환경 구축과 일·가정양립 및 인력다양성 확대와 관련된 활동을 활발히 전개하고 있다. 또한 대졸 신입사원 채용 시 여성 비율 40% 의무화 등 여성고용 확대 정책을 실시함으로써 여성친화를 중심으로 한 다양성 조직으로 변화하고 있다. 본 연구는 롯데가 수행한 여성친화조직으로의 전환 활동을 Ely & Thomas가 제안한 다양성 패러다임(Diversity Paradigm) 관점에서 분석했다. 첫 번째 관점으로 롯데는 조직 내에 다양성 요인으로 일어날 수 있는 차별을 철폐하고자 다양성 헌장을 배포했으며, 신규 채용 시에 ‘스펙태클’ 채용을 통해 성별 등의 배경과 관계없이 공정하게 채용하는 방식을 도입했다. 두 번째 관점으로 남성의 육아휴직을 의무화했고, 여성 육아휴직 역시 2년까지 연장하였으며 여성임원 비율도 5년 내에 7배 이상 확대함으로써 제도 시행에 있어 정당성을 확보하고 성장 기회에 대한 접근을 확대하였다. 세 번째 관점인 조직학습 향상을 위해 계열사 내에 다양성 활성화 태스크포스를 설치하여 서로 다른 차이를 통해 상호 학습이 가능하도록 분위기를 조성하고 있다. 이 사례는 한국 기업 중에서 여성친화조직으로의 활동에 많은 노력을 펼치고 있는 롯데의 사례를 소개함으로써 더 많은 기업이 성별을 포함한 다양성 관리 활동을 효과적으로 도입하고 수행하는데 참조가 되도록 하였다. 이를 위해 롯데 내부 자료를 바탕으로 다양성 관련 활동의 전개를 Ely & Thomas 관점으로 구분하여 소개하고 그 결과를 다양성 풍토(Diversity Climate)를 통해서 제시했다. The chairman of Lotte, Shin Dong-Bin, has been leading pro-diversity initiatives since 2016, such as a ‘Diversity Charter,’ two years of mandatory maternity leave, and at least one month of mandatory paternity leave. In 2015, the company began to deliberately change its gender composition, requiring that more than 40 percent of new employees must be women, in order to become Korea’s most female-friendly company. This research has studied Lotte’s pro-diversity initiatives through the lens of Ely’s & Thomas’ diversity process. The first step for Lotte was to eliminate possible discrimination by revealing its Diversity Charter and adopting a blind hiring process, Spec-tackle. As a second step, Lotte became the first company to adopt the aforementioned maternity and paternity policies and increased the ratio of female to male managers by 8 times over the last 5 years. The third step was to set up a diversity task force team to engage more employees in diversity activities in order to become a learning organization. The case attempts to interest more Korean organizations in diversity issues by investigating diversity initiatives at a Korean company and their effectiveness based on internal research.

강섬유의 구조적 파라미터에 따른 콘크리트의 전자파 차폐효과 분석

강섬유는 콘크리트에 함유될 경우, 다양한 건축학적 장점이 있어 자주 쓰이는 소재이며, 이는 도전율이 큰 물질이기에 건축물의 전자파 차폐효과를 증가시키는 역할을 한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 강섬유 보강 콘크리트의 차폐효과를 강섬유의 구조적 파라미터에 따라 분석하였다. Jonscher 모델을 이용하여 콘크리트의 등가 유전율을 추출하였고, 전자기 시뮬레이션 툴을 이용하여 해당 콘크리트를 모델링하였으며, 강섬유의 방향, 개수, 길이에 따른 전자기적 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 강섬유의 구조적 파라미터에 따른 입사파의 편파, 차폐효과의 레벨, 그리고 공진 주파수의 인과관계를 도출하였다. Steel fiber is a material frequently used when contained in concrete because of its various architectural advantages, and it plays a role in increasing the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) of the building owing to its high conductivity. Thus, this study analyzed the SE of the steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) according to the structural parameters of the steel fiber. The equivalent permittivity of concrete was extracted using the Jonscher model; The concrete was modeled using the electromagnetic simulation tool, and the electromagnetic properties were analyzed according to the orientation, number, and length of the steel fiber. Thus, depending on the structural parameters of the steel fiber, the causal relationship of the polarization of the incident wave, level of the SE, and resonance frequency was derived.

Wolbachia infection in the Korean endemic firefly, Luciola unmunsana (Coleoptera: Lampyridae)

Wolbachia is one of the most prevalent endosymbiontic bacteria of arthropods. The bacterium induces sex ratio distortions in various host insects through processes such as cytoplasmic incompatibility, feminization, male killing, and parthenogenesis. We investigated if the Korean endemic firefly, Luciola unmunsana was infected with the bacterium because the species had an abnormal sex ratio in the field. The results show that some individuals are infected with the bacterium. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the bacterial strain infecting the firefly is closely related to strains that infect phylogenetically distant hosts.
