Globalization studies in Asia tend to highlight the positive influences or impacts that the mega-cities could benefit from in economic development, thereby gearing up to join ‘global cities’within the world city system. Micro-level observation within a mega-city, however, brings up the issue of unequal effects of globalization among the citizens. Economic globalization, in terms of its essential attribute, tends to converge on the key centers of production, distribution, services and finance, and thus their benefits are subjected to a preoccupation by ‘the haves’, rather than ‘the have-nots’. Paying attention to this likelihood of an ‘unequal world’, the paper attempts to examine the influence of economic globalization on the informal settlements in Bangkok and its vicinity. For this purpose, Section II analyzes changes in size and spatial distribution of informal settlements, followed by a discussion on globalization impacts on informal settlements from economic, social and physical perspectives in Section III. The last section includes conclusions and policy recommendations to promote a‘ trickle down’of the benefits of economic globalization to the urban poor.
An important role for peroxiredoxin II in survival of A549 lung cancer cells resistant to gefitinib

<P>Redox adaptation is an important concept that explains the mechanisms by which cancer cells survive under persistent endogenous oxidative stress and become resistant to certain anticancer agents. To investigate this concept, we determined the expression levels of peroxiredoxins (Prxs), antioxidant enzymes in drug-resistant non-small cell lung carcinoma cells. Prx II was remarkably increased only in A549/GR (gefitinib-resistant) cells compared with A549 cells, consistent with methylation/demethylation. Prx II was highly methylated in the A549 cells but was demethylated in the A549/GR cells. The elevated expression of Prx II resulted in the downregulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell death and upregulation of cell cycle progression in the A549/GR cells. When Prx II mRNA in the A549/GR cells was knocked down, the levels of ROS and apoptosis were significantly recovered to the levels of the controls. In addition, signaling molecules involved in apoptosis were increased in the A549/GR-shPrx II cells. There was no difference in the expression of MAPK/ERK between the A549/GR cells and A549/GR-shPrx II cells, but the phosphorylation of JNK was increased in the A549/GR cells and was markedly decreased in the A549/GR-shPrx II cells. Colony number and tumor growth were significantly decreased in the A549/GR-shPrx II cells compared with the A549/GR cells. Our findings suggest that Prx II has an important role in cancer cell survival via the modulation of signaling molecules involved in apoptosis and the phosphorylation of JNK by the downregulation of ROS levels in A549/GR cells.</P>

지리정보를 다루는 GIS는 크게 데이타 입력/저장, 공간분석, 디스플레이의 세부분으로 구성되어있다. 본 논문에서는 지리정보를 구성하는 공간자료와 속성자료가 유기적으로 통합되어 디스플레이 될 수 있는 디스플레이 시스템을 윈도우상 에서 설계하였다. 시스템의 기본적인 구조와 각종 지리요소의 디스플레이 기법을 기술한다.

아시아의 (대)도시는 경제성장의 엔진역할을 해 왔지만, 동시에 과도한 인구집중과 산업화로 빈곤과 양극화, 주택․기반시설 부족, 환경오염과 교통문제 등이 고착되면서 홍수, 태풍, 지진, 쓰나미 등 재난발생 시 많은 인적, 물적 피해를 경험하여왔다. 특히 최근에는 이러한 도시화의 부작용과 기후변화가 결합되면서 자연재난이 빈번해지면서 취약계층의 어려움은 가중되고 있다. 학제적이고 시론적인 본 논문은 도시화와 불평등한 취약성에 주목하고, 협력적 거버넌스 프레임을 참조하면서 최근 부상하고 있는 인도주의 건축 개념을 설명하고 건축가의 역할을 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 논문의 주된 내용은 다음과 같다. 먼저 급속한 도시화 결과의 양면성과 빈곤층의 재난취약성에 대하여 논의한 다음(2장), 주민의 현장지식과 참여그룹 간 협력을 기반으로 하는 재난관리단계별 주요활동을 설명하고(3장), 협력적 거버넌스를 위한 건축가의 사회적 책임과 인도주의 건축의 개념을 정리한 후, 인도주의 건축의 역할을 주도적 역할과 참여적 역할로 나누어 단계별로 제시한다(4장). Many cities of Asian region play leading roles of national economic development measured typically by their proportion of Gross Domestic Product(GDP). Nonetheless, these cities also expose such problems as poverty and polarization, shortage of housing and infrastructure, environmental pollution and traffic congestion due to excessive concentration of population and production facilities. Frequent occurrence of large-scale natural disasters including typhoon, flooding, earthquake, tsunami tend to further aggravate extent of vulnerability of disaster-prone areas and people in Asian cities. Focusing on the unequal vulnerability and referring to collaborative governance framework, this exploratory paper discusses and suggests the concept and role of humanitarian architecture recently emerging among academic arena as well as disaster areas. The remaining parts of the paper are organized following. Chapter II discusses double-edges of rapid urbanization and disaster vulnerability of the poor. Based upon people"s local knowledge and collaborative efforts among participants, stepwise activities required for disaster management are explained in Chapter III. The first half of Chapter IV discusses the issue of architect"s social responsibility, and provides an operational definition of the concept of humanitarian architecture. The second half explores/suggests possible role of architects in the humanitarian space.
