Gender Differences in Fashion Awareness and Clothing Expenditures
Vol.18 No.5
Interaction of Metal Ions with NADH Model Compounds. Cupric Ion Oxidation of Dihydronicotinamides
Vol.9 No.-
Kinetic studies on cupric ion (Cu^2+) oxidation of 1-benzyl- and 1-aryl-1,4-dihydronicotinamides (XNAH) in aqueous solution were performed. In the presence of dioxygen (O_2), the reaction followed first order kinetics with respect to both XNAH and Cu^2+. The oxidation reaction was found to be independent and parallel to the acid-catalyzed hydration reaction of XNAH. The catalytic role of Cu^2+ for the oxidation of XNAH in the presence of O_2 was attributed to Cu^2+/Cu^+ redox cycle by the reactions with XNAH and O_2. The second order rate constants of the Cu^2+ oxidation reaction k_Cu and acid-catalyzed hydration reaction k_H were strongly dependent on the nature of the substituents in 1-aryl moiety. The slopes of log k_Cu vs log K_H and log k_Cu vs σ_p of the substituents plots were 1.64 and -2.2, respectively. This revealed the greater sensitivity of the oxidation reaction rate to the electron density on the ring nitrogen than the hydration reaction rate. A concerted two-electron transfer route involving XNAH-Cu^2+ complex was proposed for mechanism of the oxidation reaction.
A Critical Interpretation of Vonnegut’s Jailbird : An Unceasing Quest for Justice
Vol.56 No.2
This paper examines the meaning of ‘becoming a jailbird’ through the behaviors of Starbuck in Vonnegut’s Jailbird. Starbuck, a Harvard graduate, works as an official in the Nixon administration. He is then summoned as a Watergate co-conspirator and ends up going to jail. When he is released from the prison, he happens to meet his first lover, a shopping bag-lady and president of RAMJAC and is finally changed by her mercy and good will, and is freed from his pessimistic view and despair. But later, in the face of Kathleen’s sudden death, he conceals her will, despite her testament, and goes to jail. As a result, this delays the collapse of RAMJAC and helps the poor and people in need. Before he returns to the prison, he fulfills his self-bestowed responsibility as did Billy of Slaughterhouse-Five, by prescribing corrective lenses for Earthlings thanks to his trip to Tralfamadore. When Starbuck tries to save many people from the corrupted society and the greed of capitalistic system, it shows his spirit of sublimity and sacrifice. At his trial, he invokes the Sermon on the Mount in his unceasing quest for justice. Consequently, Vonnegut seeks justice as a realizable goal through the behaviors of jailbirds such as Starbuck and Trout. Through Jailbird, a mixture of fictionality and historical fabrication, Vonnegut lets us know that we need the love of mankind in order to coexist and realize peace and justice in this absurd world.

Reductive transformations of gem-bromonitro compounds and ${\alpha}$-nitro ketones were carried out conveniently with sodium dithionite by using dioctyl viologen as an electron-transfer catalyst in dichloromethane-water two-phase system:the bromine atom in gem-bromonitro compounds and the nitro group in ${\alpha}$-nitro ketones are replaced by hydrogen.
Dual-channel charge transfer doping of graphene by sulfuric acid
Park Kwanghee,Ryu Sunmin 대한화학회 2022 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.43 No.1
Two-dimensional materials represented by graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides undergo charge transfer (CT) processes and become hole-doped in strong mineral acids. Nonetheless, their mechanisms remain unclear or controversial. This work proposes and verifies two distinctive CT channels in sulfuric acids, respectively, driven by oxygen reduction reaction involving O2/H2O redox couples and reduction of bisulfate or related species. Acid-induced changes in the charge density of graphene were in situ quantified as a function of oxygen content using Raman spectroscopy. At acid concentrations lower than 6 M, the former channel is operative, requiring dissolved O2. Above 6 M, the degree of CT was even higher because the former is cooperated with by the latter channel, which does not need dissolved oxygen. The mechanism revealed in this study will advance our fundamental understanding of how low-dimensional materials interact with chemical environments.
A Study on Kurt Vonnegut’s Use of Alter Ego as the Exploration of Narrative Strategy
Vol.54 No.1
Examining Vonnegut’s pursuit of developing narrative strategy, this paper reviews Vonnegut’s narrative quest and analyzes how the narrative strategy of taking advantage of alter ego effectively contributes to delivering his message and vision to his readers. As Vonnegut believed narrative strategy would help him effectively deliver his message to readers, he has always been concerned about his narrative quest, creating many characters who perform certain roles for him, particularly Kilgore Trout series. Trout, as an alter ego of Vonnegut, especially represents the author, accompanies him as a friend and leads the life of a writer in several of Vonnegut’s works. In addition to that, other repeated elements such as names and places also play roles in Vonnegut’s cosmos. Reviewing Vonnegut’s kaleidoscopic cosmos in which one should examine the mutations that shape his most striking literary techniques with his plots, anthropological issues and basic philosophical beliefs, we realize that analyzing his narrative strategy could be a good way to acknowledge the author’s main idea and messages, ultimately leading to a better understanding of his literary themes and apocalyptic vision. Vonnegut, with the narrative strategy in his mind, has effectively conveyed his messages and vision not only by having Trout, his alter ego, represent him but by distinguishing himself from his own alter ego.
