Innovation in Telecom Services-Framework and Analysis Based on the Case of International Pre-paid Calling Cards In Japan

( Kumiko Miyazaki ),( Edmar Wiggers ) 기술경영경제학회 2005 Journal of Technology Innovation Vol.13 No.2

Much work on innovation has focused on the manufacturing sector. In this paper, we propose a framework for analyzing innovation in services centred on capability and technology integration. We illustrate the theoretical points made by conducting a case study on an international telephone communications provider Brastel, which introduced significant innovations in international calling services, in the form of rechargeable pre-paid calling card, through effective application of standard IT. Brastel is situated against its main competitors, considering two dimensions of price and service breadth and convenience. A novel technique for measuring competitiveness based on price and service index is introduced. The following competitors were selected: NTT, KDDI, Japan Telecom, Fusion Communications, J-Call / World Link, G-Call, ASP Check, Primus, QuickPhone, and MCI. To create the service index, factors such as ease of use, convenience, number of languages in which the services are available, and additional features were taken into account. The company itself and the rechargeable card innovation were analyzed through in-depth interviews and data collection. It was shown that a competitive advantage was maintained through internal and external integration capabilities.

Innovation strategy and technological competence building to provide next generation network and services through convergence – the case of NTT in Japan

Kumiko Miyazaki,Evelyn Giraldo 기술경영경제학회 2015 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.23 No.-

Telecommunications industry has been through major structural changes in recent years due tothe Internet. Technological, economic, and social drivers have caused the telecommunicationsmarket to converge, with boundaries between diverging technologies, industries, and servicesbecoming blurred. In this paper, an analysis is made of the impact of the paradigm shift of nextgeneration network services on the R&D and technology strategies of Nippon telegraph andtelephone (NTT) in its transition to become a leader in the provision of services, integratingtechnological competences in application technologies with competences in the underlyingnetwork technologies. Changes in the R&D organisation and strategy were identified toenable NTT to shift its focus to the upper-layer businesses.

Heterogeneity and typology of product innovation in embedded software: the case of Japanese automotive software

Zhongquan Xie,Kumiko Miyazaki 기술경영경제학회 2014 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.22 No.1

We are currently in surroundings with ubiquitous software-embedded products, while there is less understanding on innovations of the invisible embedded software (ESW). Because of its significant role in automobiles and big market share in the Japanese ESW sector, automotive software (ASW) is selected as the case for our research on heterogeneity and typology of product innovation in ESW. Based on the embedded nature of ASW, the role of Japanese automobiles in the USA and the advantage of using patenting in large third countries as a good proxy measure for national innovation activities, we employ ASW-related patents in the USPTO patent database as an indicator of ASW product innovation. Through analysing the heterogeneities of product innovation in terms of function and actors’ innovation activities over the period 1981–2010 by classifying ASW functions into fields of power train control, battery and electric power control, safety control, body control and information communication and telecommunication system, we extract the product innovation typology of ESW and conclude that the heterogeneous requirements for real-time operation and accumulation of specific knowledge are the main reasons of heterogeneity of product innovation in ESW. These results imply different R&D strategies and innovation trajectories.

Technological and non-technological innovations in B2B mobile services in Korea

Seunghye Hong,Kumiko Miyazaki 기술경영경제학회 2013 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.21 No.1

This article examines the characteristics of business-to-business (B2B) mobile services inKorea in order to identify technological and non-technological innovations. A statisticalanalysis of 242 services was done to characterize B2B mobile services in Korea. Subsequently, service products were grouped into seven types based on servicecharacteristics: mobile office/education solutions, network solutions, multimedia broadcastsolutions, business analytical solutions, security and safety solutions, payment processingsolutions and machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions for facility management. From acharacteristics-based approach, ‘new’ service characteristics after 2009–2010 are linkedwith radical innovation while service characteristics prior to 2009–2010 (but have been‘improved’) are linked with incremental innovation. A combination of ‘improved’ and ‘new’service characteristics are linked with semi-radical innovation. Subsequently, incremental, radical and semi-radical innovations were distinguished. From the perspective of nontechnologicalinnovation, recombinative and customized innovations were identified to focuson the direct competences of service providers and users.

An Empirical Analysis of the Valley of Death: Large-scale R&D Project Performance in a Japanese Diversified Company

Osawa Yoshitaka,Miyazaki Kumiko The Korean Society for Technology Manageme and Eco 2006 Journal of Technology Innovation Vol.14 No.2

The purpose of this study is to contribute reference material that provides insight into innovative process management that increases R&D output in commercializing new products. A model of a process from research to commercialization with the cumulative profit and loss curve is put forward and hypotheses related to success and failure are developed at the stages up to product launch. Seventeen large projects that have resulted in successful product launches have been examined from the initial research stage to commercialization. Prefect duration, standardized cumulative R&D expenditures and research resource concentration are analyzed in terms of statistical method and patterns in cumulative profit and loss curves after product sales, as well as the reasons for and other aspects of success/failure are investigated and analyzed. Consequently, valuable information on future management tasks has been obtained such as: (1) project duration differs depending on market sectors, product types and presence/absence of materials research (2) cumulative profit and loss curves can be categorized into four patterns (3) reasons for failure can be divided into technological and market problem categories and (4) these factors have an impact on product sales.

Analysis of the Open Source Software Sector in China

( Qiong Wu ),( Krzysztof Klincewicz ),( Kumiko Miyazaki ) 기술경영경제학회 2006 Journal of Technology Innovation Vol.14 No.2

The paper describes the status and context of the Chinese Open Source Software (OSS) industry and ecosystem based on the analysis of the components of the China OSS Promotion Union. The analysis involves comparisons of several main Chinese developers of Linux operating system and makers of open source counterpart of the popular Microsoft Office package as well as several main Chinese OSS communities. Comparisons concern the technological and business aspect. The findings reveal peculiarities of the divergence of innovative activities of Chinese companies, as well as indicate that the strong government support may at the same time limit the technology selection under rigid competition, especially as foreign open source companies are found to be more focused on hobbyist developers and are able to maintain larger independent communities. Implications of the paper include the need to coordinate global development efforts and adjust science & technology policies in order to stimulate both the development and the diffusion of open source among Chinese companies and individual hobbyists.
