Autoimmunity and intestinal colonization by Candida albicans in patients with type 1 diabetes at the time of the diagnosis

Gursoy, Semra,Kockar, Tuba,Atik, Sezen Ugan,Onal, Zerrin,Onal, Hasan,Adal, Erdal The Korean Pediatric Society 2018 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.61 No.7

Purpose: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic and immune-mediated disease, which is characterized by the progressive destruction of pancreatic beta cells. T1DM precipitates in genetically susceptible individuals through environmental factors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of autoimmunity and intestinal colonization of Candida albicans on the development of T1DM. Methods: Forty-two patients newly diagnosed with T1DM and 42 healthy subjects were included in this monocentric study. The basic and clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded. T1DM-, thyroid-, and celiac-associated antibodies were evaluated. Stool cultures for C. albicans were performed to assess whether or not gut integrity was impaired in patients with T1DM. Results: The evaluation of T1DM- and thyroid-associated antibodies showed that the prevalences of islet cell antibodies and antithyroperoxidase positivity were higher in the study patients than in the patients in the control group. Furthermore, the direct examination and culture of fresh stool samples revealed that 50% of the patients with T1DM and 23.8% of the control subjects had fungi (C. albicans). Conclusion: Through this study, we suggest that the presence of intestinal C. albicans colonization at the time of the diagnosis of T1DM may indicate impairment of normal intestinal microbiota. We also suggest that there may be a tendency of T1DM in patients with a high prevalence of intestinal C. albicans.

Real Life Data of Treat and Extend Intravitreal Ranibizumab and Aflibercept Therapy in Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration Patients: 3-Year Results

Ozgul Ugurtay,Alev Kockar,Elvan Alper Sengul 대한안과학회 2021 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.35 No.4

Purpose: To compare functional and anatomic outcome of intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) and intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) treatments in neovascular age-related macular degeneration by using the treat and extend (TE) protocol. Methods: In this retrospective chart study, treatment naïve 74 eyes of 74 age-related macular degeneration patients treated with IVR and IVA (38 eyes in IVR and 36 eyes in IVA group) with TE protocol were included. Following three consecutive monthly intravitreal injections, TE protocol was applied to each group. Patients were followed up for at least 36 months. Mean change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macula thickness (CMT) and injection numbers over 3 years were compared. Results: Among 36 months period, the mean number of injections was 17 ± 4 for both groups (p > 0.05). In terms of CMT, there was no statistically significant difference between groups at 36 months compared to baseline. A decrease of 72.55 ±39.37 μm in CMT was detected in IVR group, whereas the decrease was 70.58 ± 33.96 μm in IVA group (p > 0.05). There was a significant increase in BCVA at 36 months of measurements. In addition, BCVA demonstrated an increase of 4.1 ± 0.44 letters in IVR group and 4.36 ± 0.67 letters in IVA group after 36 months compared to the baseline (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Both IVR and IVA injections provided significant improvements and stability in BCVA and CMT, however there was no significant difference between IVR and IVA injections with TE protocol of 36 months.

Emulsifier-Free Emulsion Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate Containing Hydrophilic Magnetite Nanoparticles

        Seda Beyaz,Taner Tanrisever,Hakan Kockar 한국고분자학회 2010 Macromolecular Research Vol.18 No.12

Emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in the presence of hydrophilic magnetite nanoparticles using a persulfate initiator. Before the magnetic nanoparticles were placed into the polymerization system, they were dispersed and stabilized electrostatically with perchloric acid in water (magnetic sol). For magnetic nanoparticles in the sol, the hydrodynamic radius and polydispersity index (PDI) measured by dynamic light scattering was 18.8 nm and PDI of 0.282, respectively. The latex sizes also were determined to be 125-223 nm with a PDI of 0.009-0.065. Magnetic measurements by vibrating sample magnetometry confirmed that the magnetite nanoparticles and magnetic poly(methyl methacrylate) nanospheres exhibited superparamagnetism with zero coercivity. The saturation magnetization of the magnetic polymeric nanospheres ranged from 0.2 to 1.19 emu/g depending on the magnetite content. The polymer chain terminations were affected by the addition of magnetite nanoparticles to the polymerization system. In addition, the magnetite that reduced the average molecular weight of the polymers obtained by gel permeation chromatography should be defined as a transfer agent.

Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire in Older People

        Merve Karapinar,Ferdi Baskurt,Zeliha Baskurt,Ayla Gunal,Muhammet Cem Kockar 대한노인병학회 2020 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.24 No.4

Background: Activities and participation play important roles in the maintenance of healthy aging. The maintenance of these factors optimizes social life to increase the quality of life with aging. However, there is a lack of questionnaires in Turkish to evaluate activity and participation among older people. This study translated and cross-culturally adapted the Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire (Ox-PAQ) into Turkish and investigated its psychometric properties in the older adult population. Methods: The Turkish version of the Ox-PAQ was produced after a translation and back-translation process. The Ox-PAQ was administered to 230 and 60 individuals for construct validity and reliability analyses, respectively. To assess the test-retest reliability of the Turkish Ox-PAQ, the questionnaire was reapplied 7 days after the first interview. Cronbach’s alpha (α) was used to evaluate the internal consistency. The Ox-PAQ was compared to the Short Form-12 and the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living Scale to determine its validity. Results: The Turkish Ox-PAQ showed excellent internal consistency (α=0.98) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.98, 0.96, and 0.97 for the subscales of routine activity level, social engagement, and emotional well-being, respectively). In the validity analysis, factor analysis demonstrated a probable structure of the three factors that together explained 66.35% of the total variance. The Turkish Ox-PAQ was correlated with the other comparison measures used in this study. Conclusion: The Turkish Ox-PAQ is a reliable and valid questionnaire to evaluate the participation and activity levels of older people (Clinical Trial Number: NCT04368754).
