ALARA for Nuclear Power Plant Operation

        Knapp,Peter James 대한방사선방어학회 1979 방사선방어학회지 Vol.4 No.1

Comparison of the risk of death due to radiation exposure with the same risk due to occupational hazards in other safe industries underlines the importance of the ALARA principle. The outlined responsibilities and listed examples presented here can serve as a basis for expanding and developing the concepts necessary for its successful application.

Social Minds and Family Systems -D. H. Lawrence`s Sons and Lovers and Alan Palmer`s Critical Theories-

        ( John V. Knapp ) 경남대학교 인문과학연구소 2010 人文論叢 Vol.26 No.-

In this essay, I focus on Alan Palmer`s ideas from Fictional Minds (2004) and Social Minds in Fiction (Style, spring 2011; Ohio State UP, January 2011) concerning aspectual points of view and situated identity. For Palmer, the concept of aspectuality serves as a reminder that ... the storyworld is ... being experienced differently, under other aspects, by all of the characters who are not currently being focalized in the text (22 in MS version of Style). He then notes my discussion (in the context of family systems theory) of the father, Walter Morel, in Lawrence`s Sons and Lovers as an example of how aspectuality is a way of bringing to centre stage previously marginalized characters whose voices may not often be heard (cf. also my Striking at the Joints, 1996). I elaborate on some reasons why previous discussions of literary character in Lawrence`s novel have been so relatively one-sided for/against either spouse, what this critical bias has meant generally for criticism, and why I think this example suggests how Palmer`s work is a major step in a useful critical direction.

      • Asia`s Diversity & Asia`s Dwellings: A Geographer`s Perspective

( Ronald G. Knapp ) 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2003 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.3 No.2

This paper explores some of the essential geographic elements relating to Asia that make it difficult generalizing about the continent as well as a challenge to map Asia`s vernacular architectural patterns. While generalizing about ``time`` and ``space`` are both important, one must guard against comparing housing patterns in relatively small countries with those of larger ones and suggesting a timelessness and homogeneity of building forms within Asia. Insufficient data sources further frustrate any effort to employ maps as analytical tools of analysis. Old dwellings in Asia are not the product of a motionless traditional culture in which values were stagnant and techniques static, yet the terms ``tradition`` and ``traditional`` are unfortunately loaded with ambiguities of agelessness, monotony, and permanence rather than revealing that ``traditions`` are recreated and remodified as time passes and as building structures are brought from one place to another. Spurred by accelerated economic development that has come on the heals of decades of neglect, warfare, and political upheaval, much of Asia`s inherited past has been vanishing rapidly. Yet, the nature of this crisis of a loss of heritage alarms some but certainly not all, and varies from country to country in the attention given to it. Market reforms, political squabbling, conflicting visions of planners, fluid property markets, poorly enforced or absent policies, indifferent public attitudes, as well as inertia and neglect continue to corrode the accumulated built heritage and frustrate efforts of those who wish to further enhance heritage preservation efforts. While this paper calls for increasing the use of maps when writing about Asia`s vernacular architecture in order to raise questions, kindle insights, and stimulate thinking about the analytical power of graphic representation of information, it recognizes inherent difficulties in the mapping enterprise.

Language, Gesture, and the Task of Theatre: András Visky’s Dramaturgical Ethics

        ( Jeremy D Knapp ) 한국영어영문학회 2020 영어 영문학 Vol.66 No.3

Beginning with András Visky’s seminal essay “In Search of a Lost Reality,” this article uncovers important insights for a 21st century understanding of theatre’s role in human culture. Moving from Visky’s essay to his Juliet and another play by Pamela Gien’s The Syringa Tree, this article locates the features of drama which correspond to Visky’s dramaturgy, and bids us understand some ethical implications of theatre. These ethics spring directly from the use of absurdist language, gesture, and the hope for theatre’s role in allowing communities to respond to violence, both political and personal. A comparison to Gien demonstrates that Visky’s dramatic approach is applicable even to plays which may, in their textual presentation, appear very different from Visky’s own, suggesting that the task of theatre envisioned by Visky applies beyond Visky’s own oeuvre. Whereas Visky as a dramaturg invites and calls actors to use gesture as a tool for enacting the ethic of theatre, Gien implies an agreement with Visky not only in her staged collaborations, but also in the textual directions for gesture which she provides in the play script itself. The comparison reveals theatre as a site for audience members to re-examine traumas within their own cultural memory and practice, whilst avoiding the worst tendencies of conscious self-victimisation. Finally, the essay briefly points to new work in the cognitive humanities which corroborates Visky’s stated aims and solidifies the claim that Visky’s theatrical ethic helps to deepen our understanding of theatre as a site of historical and political catharsis.

People Are Special, Animals Are Not: An Early Medieval Confucian’s Views on the Difference between Humans and Beasts

        ( Keith N. Knapp ) 성균관대학교 유교문화연구소 2024 儒敎文化硏究(中文版) Vol.0 No.41

Early Confucians viewed their world in an anthropocentric way - man was an embodiment of the cosmos and embodied the virtues of benevolence and righteousness. By the early medieval period (220-589), though, Confucian tales of virtuous animals flourished, betraying that Confucian attitudes towards animals had changed: the moral boundaries between animals and humans were fluid and beasts could serve as exemplars for humans. One of the few early medieval Confucian thinkers who spoke at length about animals was He Chengtian 何承天 (370-447), a famed historian, astronomer, classical scholar, musicologist, and numerologist. His view of what separates humans from animals emerges from letters and essays he wrote attacking Buddhism. To refute the idea that humans and animals are both sentient beings, he espoused the old belief that people had a privileged place in the universe because of their moral excellence. Moreover, even though there was a gap between sages and ordinary humans, the latter were still ethically superior to beasts. In addition, for him, meateating was both a natural and sacred activity. Ironically, man’s benevolence and righteousness are most visible in the humane ways that Confucians wanted people to hunt and fish. He Chengtian’s opposition to Buddhism thus seems to have pushed him to a more extreme view of animals than his contemporaries. Nevertheless, his attempt to refute the idea of karmic retribution through an example taken from the animal kingdom betrays that he saw humans and non-human animals on a more equal footing than he cared to admit.

Clustering Social Media Services and Messengers by Functionality

        Fischer, Julia,Knapp, Daniel,Nguyen, Bich Chau,Richter, Daniel,Shutsko, Aliaksandra,Stoppe, Melanie,Williams, Kelly,Ilhan, Aylin,Stock, Wolfgang G. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Informat 2020 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.8 No.4

The objective of this research is to analyze which functions make up web-based as well as mobile social media services and messengers. Services are clustered by their functionality. A total of 640 individual functions were identified, while investigating altogether 44 selected services in their web and mobile versions. Applying content analysis, functions were assigned to the services. The services were ranked by the number of implemented functions, and the functions were ranked by their occurrence in the services. Cluster analysis was applied to classify the services according to their functionality. Facebook and VKontakte were found to be the ones with the most functions; the most frequently implemented functions are support, profile, and account-related. Cluster analysis revealed six classes for mobile and seven classes for web applications. There is a noteworthy difference regarding the functionality scope between web and mobile applications of the same services. An example for this is Mendeley with 38 functions in the mobile and 91 functions in the web version. This is the first empirical attempt at clustering social media services based on their functionality.
