Objectives:This study aims to investigate the clinical characteristics and neuropsychological profiles of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their siblings. Methods:Eighteen children (age 8.2±1.7 years, 12 boys) with ADHD and their 18 siblings (age 7.8±1.6 years, 8 boys) completed Continuous Performance (CPT), Stroop, Children’s Trail Making, Rey-Kim Memory, and Kim’s Frontal Executive Function tasks. The parents of these subjects underwent the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale (ARS), 10-item Parent General Behavior Inventory (P-GBI), and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). Paired t-tests were used. Results:The inattention (p=.020), and hyperactivity-impulsivity (p=.001), scores of the ARS and the P-GBI score (p=.004) were significantly higher in children with ADHD than in their siblings. Deficits in social communication and motivation on SRS were higher in children with ADHD than in their siblings (p=.017 and p=.011, respectively). Z-scores of omission and commission errors as well as response time variability on visual CPT and omission errors on auditory CPT were in clinically significant range, and z-score of omission errors on auditory CPT was in borderline range in siblings. Omission (p=.018) and commission errors on Visual CPT (p=.007) were significantly higher in children with ADHD compared to their siblings. Recognition efficiency on Kim’s Frontal Executive Function Task was lower in children with ADHD compared to their siblings, but in normal range in both groups. Stroop interference and figure fluency on Kims Frontal Executive Function Task were in borderline range in ADHD group, and figure fluency was in borderline range in siblings. Conclusion:Our results support a preliminary evidence for mild degree of attention deficit in ADHD siblings. Further studies are needed to examine the cognitive functions of siblings with ADHD in larger samples.

A Healing Method of Tympanic Membrane Perforations Using Three-Dimensional Porous Chitosan Scaffolds
Kim, Jangho,Kim, Seung Won,Choi, Seong Jun,Lim, Ki Taek,Lee, Jong Bin,Seonwoo, Hoon,Choung, Pill-Hoon,Park, Keehyun,Cho, Chong-Su,Choung, Yun-Hoon,Chung, Jong Hoon Mary Ann Liebert 2011 Tissue engineering. Part A Vol.17 No.21
<P>Both surgical tympanoplasty and paper patch grafts are frequently procedured to heal tympanic membrane (TM) perforation or chronic otitis media, despite their many disadvantages. In this study, we report a new healing method of TM perforation by using three-dimensional (3D) porous chitosan scaffolds (3D chitosan scaffolds) as an alternative method to surgical treatment or paper patch graft. Various 3D chitosan scaffolds were prepared; and the structural characteristics, mechanical property, in vitro biocompatibility, and healing effects of the 3D chitosan scaffolds as an artificial TM in in vivo animal studies were investigated. A 3D chitosan scaffold of 5 wt.% chitosan concentration showed good proliferation of TM cells in an in vitro study, as well as suitable structural characteristics and mechanical property, as compared with either 1% or 3% chitosan. In in vivo animal studies, 3D chitosan scaffold were able to migrate through the pores and surfaces of TM cells, thus leading to more effective TM regeneration than paper patch technique. Histological observations demonstrated that the regenerated TM with the 3D chitosan scaffold consisted of three (epidermal, connective tissue, and mucosal) layers and were thicker than normal TMs. The 3D chitosan scaffold technique may be an optimal healing method used in lieu of surgical tympanoplasty in certain cases to heal perforated TMs.</P>
A database for allergenic proteins and tools for allergenicity prediction
Kim, ChangKug,Kwon, SooJin,Lee, GangSeob,Lee, HwanKi,Choi, JiWeon,Kim, YongHwan,Hahn, JangHo Biomedical Informatics Publishing Group 2009 Bioinformation Vol.3 No.8
<P>The AllergenPro database has developed a web-based system that will provide information about allergen in microbes, animals and plants. The database has three major parts and functions:(i) database list; (ii) allergen search; and (iii) allergenicity prediction. The database contains 2,434 allergens related information readily available in the database such as on allergens in rice microbes (712 records), animals (617 records) and plants (1,105 records). Furthermore, this database provides bioinformatics tools for allergenicity prediction. Users can search for specific allergens by various methods and can run tools for allergenicity prediction using three different methods.</P><P><B>Availability</B></P><P>The database is available for free at http://www.niab.go.kr/nabic/</P>
