Electromagnetically Excited Audible Noise in Electrical Machines

With the rising utilisation of electrical machines to increase the output-Power of the device several problems occur. Next to probable additional losses and other parasitic effects, aspects concerning the audible noise radiated by the device are of particular interest. This contribution is intended to give an overview to the problematic of the analysis of vibrations and audible noise radiated by electrical machines. It is not the intention of the authors to set off a scientific firework with various complicated equations in this contribution. The paper should rather give an insight in a complicated technical matter and should help to understand the mechanism of vibration and parasitic noise generation in electrical machines. Rotating machines, such as the induction motor as well as non-rotating electrical machines, such as inductors or transformers are studied. The origin of vibrations leading to noise radiations is studied and discussed to illustrate the way in which the analysis of the governing effects can be performed. Magnetically generated radial pullout force waves in rotating electrical machines are the main cause of the excited audible noise, whereas magnetostriction plays an important role in transformers.

This paper proposes the rotor position and rotor speed estimation for an interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) using Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) in alpha-beta coordinate system. Conventional algorithms using UKF are based on the simple observer model of IPMSM in d-q coordinate system. Rotor acceleration is neglected within the sampling step. An expansion of the observer model in an alpha-beta coordinate system with the consideration of the rotor speed variation provides the improved rotor position and speed estimation. The results show good stability concerning the expansion of observer model for the IPMSM.
Sensorless Control for Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines at Low Speed

This paper proposes a sensorless speed control based on a novel extension of the torque producing flux (active flux) observer for the surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SPMSM) without additional high frequency signal injection. From the estimated torque producing flux, the rotor position and speed can be calculated at low speed due to their independency. Therefore, no rotor position sensor is required. Two approaches of the torque producing flux observer are presented and compared. The results show the stability and robustness of the expansion of the torque producing flux observer at low speed for the SPMSM.
Comparative Study on the Optimization Methods for a Motor Drive of Artificial Hearts

Worldwide cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death. Aside from heart transplants, which are limited due to the availability of human donor hearts, artificial hearts are the only therapy available for terminal heart diseases. For various reasons, a total implantable artificial heart is desirable. But the limited space in the human thorax sets rigorous restrictions on the weight and dimensions of the device. Nevertheless, the appropriate functionality of the artificial heart must be ensured and blood damage must be prevented. These requirements set further restrictions to the drive of this device. In the this paper, two optimization methods, namely, the manual parameter variation and Differential Evolution algorithm, are presented and applied to match the specifications of an artificial heart.
A Study of a Novel Wind Turbine Concept with Power Split Gearbox

This paper focuses on the design and control of a new concept for wind turbines with a planetary gearbox to realize a power split. This concept, where the generated wind power is split into two parts, is to increase the utilization of the wind power and may be particularly suitable for large scale off-shore wind turbines. In order to reduce the cost of the power electronic devices, a synchronous generator, which is driven by the planetary gear, is directly connected to the power grid without electronic converter. A servo drive, which functions as the control actuator, is connected to the power grid by a power electronic converter. With small scale power electronic device, the current harmonics can also be reduced. The speed of the main shaft is controlled to track the optimal tip speed ratio. Meanwhile the speed of the synchronous generator is controlled to stay at the synchronous speed. The minimum rated power of the servo motor and the converter, is studied and discussed in this paper. Different variants of the wind turbine with a planetary gear are also compared. The controller for optimal tip speed ratio and synchronous speed tracking is given.
Design of Braille cell Setting Actuators for the Application in the Braille Mouse Concept

Refreshable Braille displays have already been developed in the past, but they remain quite bulky and expensive. Small displays contain only a single or a few Braille cells, with pins pushing into the fingertips. However, they are not as successful as larger displays because the skin is more sensitive to lateral movement than to orthogonal pressure. This, paper presents the design of linear electromagnetic actuators, which allows a considerable reduction in size and cost for such refreshable Braille displays. Different actuator concepts are compared. A new actuator is proposed and optimised by means of finite element simulations, which are verified with measurements on a prototype.

This research presents a topology optimization for manipulating the main heat flow in coupled magneto-thermal systems. The heat generated by eddy currents is considered in the design domain assuming an adiabatic boundary. For a practical optimization, the convection condition is considered in the topological process of the thermal field. Topology design sensitivity is derived by employing the discrete system equations combined with the adjoint variable method. As numerical examples, a simple iron and a C-core design heated-up by eddy currents demonstrate the strength of the proposed approach to solve the coupled problem.

Range extender modules are one option to compensate for short drive ranges of electric vehicles. The close interaction of combustion engine and generator poses new challenges in development. A key requirement for range extender systems is to be light and virtually imperceptible in operation. High-speed electrical machines aim at increasing power density. However, their introduction in a range extender requires a gearbox. The combustion engine torque fluctuations can lead to rattle in the gearbox. The rattle can be overcome by a dual mass flywheel. An interdisciplinary model is developed and used to analyse three different range extender systems: one with a low speed generator without gearbox, one with a high-speed generator, and one with a high-speed generator and a dual mass flywheel. The efficiency was found to be higher for the system with a low speed generator, whereas the power density and the costs are beneficial for the high-speed concept. A dual mass flywheel eliminates the changes of torque direction in the gearbox. It reduces the speed fluctuations of the gearbox and generator by over 90 % compared to the low speed setup. But it increases rolling moment and subsequently chassis excitation compared to a setup with only a gearbox.
