Investigation of Li Dopant as a Sintering Aid for ScSZ Electrolyte for IT-SOFC

        Mori, Masashi,Liu, Yu,Ma, Shuhua,Hashimoto, Shin-ichi,Takei, Katsuhito The Korean Ceramic Society 2008 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.45 No.12

In this study, the effects of small amounts (${\leq}3\;mol%$) of Li doping on the sintering characteristics and electrochemical performance of $(ZrO_2)_{0.89}(ScO_{1.5})_{0.1}(CeO_2)_{0.01}$ (ScSZ) were investigated. By adding 3 mol% lithium, the densification temperature of ScSZ was reduced from the conventional temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. It was found that Li doping also led to changes in the Zr:Sc ratio at the grain boundaries. Correspondingly, the dispersion of lithium zirconia at the grain boundaries accelerated the growth of ScSZ grains and increased the grain boundary resistance at temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$. At elevated temperatures of $450{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the electrical conductivity of the ScSZ after doping remained almost unchanged under air and reducing atmospheres. These results suggest that the addition of lithium is promising for use in low temperature co-firing of ScSZ-based components for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Combination of a SARS-CoV-2 IgG Assay and RT-PCR for Improved COVID-19 Diagnosis

        Aoki Kotaro,Takai Kunitomo,Nagasawa Tatsuya,Kashiwagi Katsuhito,Mori Nobuaki,Matsubayashi Keiji,Satake Masahiro,Tanaka Ippei,Kodama Nanae,Shimodaira Takahiro,Ishii Yoshikazu,Miyazaki Taito,Ishii Toshi 대한진단검사의학회 2021 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.41 No.6

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is generally diagnosed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR or serological assays. The SARS-CoV-2 viral load decreases a few days after symptom onset. Thus, the RT-PCR sensitivity peaks at three days after symptom onset (approximately 80%). We evaluated the performance of the ARCHITECT® SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay (henceforth termed IgG assay; Abbott Laboratories, Lake County, IL, USA), and the combination of RT-PCR and the IgG assay for COVID-19 diagnosis. Methods: In this retrospective study, 206 samples from 70 COVID-19 cases at two hospitals in Tokyo that were positive using RT-PCR were used to analyze the diagnostic sensitivity. RT-PCR-negative (N=166), COVID-19-unrelated (N=418), and Japanese Red Cross Society (N=100) samples were used to evaluate specificity. Results: Sensitivity increased daily after symptom onset and exceeded 84.4% after 10 days. Specificity ranged from 98.2% to 100% for samples from the three case groups. Seroconversion was confirmed from 9 to 20 days after symptom onset in 18 out of 32 COVID-19 cases with multiple samples and from another case with a positive result in the IgG assay for the first available sample. Conclusions: The combination of RT-PCR and IgG assay improves the robustness of laboratory diagnostics by compensating for the limitations of each method.

X-ray Diffraction and Infrared Spectroscopy Studies on Crystal and Lamellar Structure and CHO Hydrogen Bonding of Biodegradable Poly(hydroxyalkanoate)

        Sato Harumi,Murakami Rumi,Zhang Jianming,Ozaki Yukihiro,Mori Katsuhito,Takahashi Isao,Terauchi Hikaru,Noda Isao The Polymer Society of Korea 2006 Macromolecular Research Vol.14 No.4

Temperature-dependent, wide-angle, x-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns and infrared (IR) spectra were measured for biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and its copolymers, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) P(HB-co-HHx) (HHx=2.5, 3.4, 10.5, and 12 mol%), in order to explore their crystal and lamellar structure and their pattern of C-H...O=C hydrogen bonding. The WAXD patterns showed that the P(HB-co-HHx) copolymers have the same orthorhombic system as PHB. It was found from the temperature-dependent WAXD measurements of PHB and P(HB-co-HHx) that the a lattice parameter is more enlarged than the b lattice parameter during heating and that only the a lattice parameter shows reversibility during both heating and cooling processes. These observations suggest that an interaction occurs along the a axis in PHB and P(HB-co-HHx). This interaction seems to be due to an intermolecular C-H...O=C hydrogen bonding between the C=O group in one helical structure and the $CH_3$ group in the other helical structure. The x-ray crystallographic data of PHB showed that the distance between the O atom of the C=O group in one helical structure and the H atom of one of the three C-H bonds of the $CH_3$ group in the other helix structure is $2.63{\AA}$, which is significantly shorter than the sum of the van der Waals separation ($2.72{\AA}$). This result and the appearance of the $CH_3$ asymmetric stretching band at $3009 cm^{-1}$ suggest that there is a C-H...O=C hydrogen bond between the C=O group and the $CH_3$ group in PHB and P(HB-co-HHx). The temperature-dependent WAXD and IR measurements revealed that the crystallinity of P(HB-co-HHx) (HHx =10.5 and 12 mol%) decreases gradually from a fairly low temperature, while that of PHB and P(HB-co-HHx) (HHx = 2.5 and 3.5 mol%) remains almost unchanged until just below their melting temperatures. It was also shown from our studies that the weakening of the C-H...O = C interaction starts from just above room temperature and proceeds gradually increasing temperature. It seems that the C-H...O=C hydrogen bonding stabilizes the chain holding in the lamellar structure and affects the thermal behaviour of PHB and its copolymers.
