        Data Hiding Algorithm for Images Using Discrete Wavelet Transform and Arnold Transform

        In this paper, data hiding algorithm using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Arnold Transform is proposed. The secret data is scrambled using Arnold Transform to make it secure. Wavelet subbands of a cover image are obtained using DWT. The scrambled secret data is embedded into significant wavelet coefficients of subbands of a cover image. The proposed algorithm is robust to a variety of attacks like JPEG and JPEG2000 compression, image cropping and median filtering. Experimental results show that the PSNR of the composite image is 1.05 dB higher than the PSNR of existing algorithms and capacity is 25% higher than the capacity of existing algorithms.

      • Steganography Technique for JPEG2000 Compressed Images Using Histogram in Wavelet Domain

        In this work, a steganography technique using histogram shifting for JPEG2000 compressed images is proposed. Histogram of the wavelet coefficients of each wavelet subband is calculated and shifted to embed secret image data. This embedding is performed on the peak wavelet coefficients during wavelet decomposition process of JPEG2000 encoder using Lifting scheme. Optimal Pixel Adjustment Process (OPAP) is performed on stego images to enrich their visual quality. The results given in this work show that proposed technique provide large embedding capacity and better visual quality of stego images than existing steganography techniques for JPEG2000 compressed images. Extracted secret image using proposed technique is similar to its original secret image.

        A proposal for empowering slum dwellers as a viable way of addressing urbanization challenges in Katanga slum, Kampala, Uganda

        Slum settlement, a direct result of the rapid worldwide urbanization is a common site in most developing countries. Uganda is among the top African countries with high number of slums. The status of Katanga slum located in the low-lands between Mulago national hospital and Makerere University is a typical of many other slums within Uganda. This project proposal seeks to tackle urbanization challenges by specializing in slum upgrading as a sustainable way of curbing the menace. An integrated toilet, biogas, poultry and backyard gardening project is proposed as a channel of boosting the Katanga slum dwellers’ economic, sanitation and domestic energy status. Designed to serve up to 30 households, the project will utilize residual wastes from poultry houses and toilets to produce biogas and slurry. The biogas yield will provide clean cooking fuel and energy for lighting, while the slurry used as organic fertilizers to improve vegetable yields. The social, economic and environmental impacts of the project will empower the vulnerable women and children within the slums and reduce water pollution and land degradation. This affordable project can be applied in developing countries experiencing slum settlement challenges as a strategy for reducing urbanization pressure.

        MODELING OF A HELICALLY COILED HFC134a EVAPORATOR

        A computer simulation model has been developed for the performance analysis and design optimization of a helical coil and cylindrical shell type evaporator working with HFC-134a by using the appropriate empirical correlations of heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in the helical tubes as available in the literature. This model is based on a numerical method of cell discretization of shell side and tube side of the evaporator. The local values of variables are calculated and the mass, momentum and energy balance is applied to each small cell. The whole sequential and iterative procedure to satisfy the boundary conditions has been transformed in the computer codes. The model has been validated by comparing with the actual results of an experimental study which is also a part of this work. A detailed analysis of the effects of varying input parameters of both fluids on the performance of evaporator was carried out with the help of this model. It also gives the optimum values of mass velocity of refrigerant and the helical tube diameter against the available flow conditions of refrigerant and of external fluid and the required degree of vapor superheat at the exit of evaporator. Thus it provides an easy solution in both the cases of either the performance optimization of an existing evaporator or the design optimization of a new evaporator. The inherent errors in the outcome of correlations for heat transfer, pressure drop and refrigerant properties are the limitations of this model.

        EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM WORKING UNDER TRANSIENT CONDITIONS

        The impact of transient conditions along with varied capillary tube length and charge quantity over the performance of a simple refrigeration system under all time transient operations has been investigated in a specially designed experimental setup. A maximum drop of 75% in the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system was recorded by the end of the transient cooling period. The continuous deterioration in performance from start to end of the transient cooling job can be well minimized by the optimum selection of capillary tube length and charge quantity. This paper refers some of the existing methods to determine the appropriate length of the coiled capillary tube and charge quantity for a newly designed refrigeration machine working under steady state conditions and compares the experimental results of transient operation with these. Optimum charge quantity for transient operation in the present study is 3.5% to 5% less than that calculated by the existing analytical and numerical methods. The optimum length of coiled capillary tube for transient operation as found in this experimental study matches approximately with the length predicted by the existing dimensionless correlation on the basis of design parameters as estimated towards the end of the transient cooling period.
