      • Confining grains of textured Cu2O films to single-crystal nanowires and resultant change in resistive switching characteristics.

        <P>By confining columnar grains of textured oxide film using anodized aluminum oxide template, we could obtain a grain-boundary-free (GB-free) cuprous oxide (Cu(2)O) nanowire arrays with a narrow diameter distribution and a high density under the same electrochemical deposition condition. A two-terminal device fabricated using an individual GB-free nanowire and Au/Cr electrodes exhibits bipolar resistive switching contrary to the unipolar one of a textured film, and Schottky-like conduction. On the other hand, a nanowire device with Pt electrodes reveals non-switching behavior and Ohmic conduction. Thus, we can propose that the bipolar switching of a nanowire device with Au/Cr electrodes may result from the modulation of Schottky barrier at the interface by migration of oxygen vacancies while the unipolar one of a textured film may be defined as the bulky filamentary switching along the GBs in the GB-embedded texture films.</P>

      • Ion-selective detection by plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane in glass nanopipette with alternating voltage modulation.

        <P>An alternating current (AC) voltage modulation was applied to ion-selective observations with plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membranes in glass nanopipettes. The liquid confronting the membranes in the nanopipettes, the conditioning process, and AC voltage modulation play important roles in the ion-selective detection. In the AC detection system developed by us, where distilled water was used as the liquid within the nanopipettes, potassium ions were selectively detected in the sample solution of sodium and potassium ions because sodium ions were captured at the membrane containing bis(12-crown-4) ionophores, before the saturation of the ionophores. The membrane lost the selectivity after the saturation. On using sodium chloride as the liquid within the nanopipette, the membrane selectively detected potassium and sodium ions before and after the saturation of ionophores, respectively. The ion-selective detection of our system can be explained by the ion extraction-diffusion-dissolution mechanism through the bis(12-crown-4) ionophores with AC voltage modulation.</P>

      • Well-Controlled Microcellular Biodegradable PLA/Silk Composite Foams Using Supercritical CO<sub>2</sub>

        <P>PLA biodegradable composites reinforced with various silk fibroin powder contents (0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt.-%) were prepared by solution processing technique using CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB> as solvent. After that the composites and virgin PLA were foamed by using supercritical CO<SUB>2</SUB>. The influence of silk contents on PLA/silk fibroin powder composite foams were investigated by using SEM, XRD and DSC. Compared with PLA foam, the composite foams exhibited a reduction in cell size and increase in cell density at high silk content. With an increase in saturation temperature and pressure, the cell size was increasing and both the cell density and foam density were decreased simultaneously.</P><P> <img src='wiley_img/14387492-2009-294-9-MAME200900103-gra001.gif' alt='wiley_img/14387492-2009-294-9-MAME200900103-gra001'> </P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Supercritical CO<SUB>2</SUB> was used to foam biodegradable PLA composites reinforced with silk fibroin in CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB> solution.         Analysis of biaxial proportional low-cycle fatigue and biaxial accumulative plasticity of hull inclined-crack plate

        Fracture induced failure of plates in hull structures subjected to in-plane biaxial low-cycle fatigue loading are generally a combination of accumulative plasticity and biaxial low-cycle fatigue damage. A biaxial low-cycle fatigue crack growth analysis of a hull structure that accounts for the accumulative plasticity effect can be suitable for the actual evaluation of the overall fracture induced failure of the hull structure in severe sea conditions. An analytical model of biaxial low-cycle fatigue crack propagation with a control parameter for the J integral was presented for hull inclined-crack plate. The test was conducted for cruciform specimens made of Q235 steel with an inclined crack to validate the presented analysis. The biaxial accumulative plasticity behaviour and the effects of the biaxiality and stress ratios were investigated by numerical analysis. The results of this study reveal a strong dependence of biaxial low-cycle fatigue crack propagation on biaxial accumulated plasticity.

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlations big five personality traits, abnormal eating behavior, depression and, life satisfaction among female university students. Methods: The subjects for this study were female university students in Seoul, Korea. The data were collected from 151 female university students from August 13, 2019 to August 22, 2019. They were asked to fill out Big Five Inventory- Korean version(BFI-K), The Korean Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(KCES-D), The Korean Version of Eating Attitudes Test-26(KEAT-26), and, Satisfaction With Life Scale(SWLS). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, T-test, ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Result: First, College students’ nervousness among the five personality traits was significantly associated with depression and life satisfaction. Second, College students’ agreeableness among the five personality traits was significantly associated with abnormal eating behavior and life satisfaction. Third, College students’ abnormal eating behaviors were significantly associated with depression. Conclusion: These results suggest that female university students with higher level of nervousness are vulnerable to depression. And, it suggests that female university students with higher level of agreeableness are vulnerable to abnormal eating behavior. The intervention to consider five personality traits may improve mental health among female university students.

      • Improved Ion-Selective Detection Method Using Nanopipette with Poly(vinyl chloride)-Based Membrane

        <P>Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are widely used to detect targeted ions in solution selectively. Application of an ISE to a small area detection system with a nanopipette requires a special measurement method in order to avoid the enhanced background signal problem caused by a cation-rich layer near the charged inner surface of the nanopipette and the selectivity change problem due to relatively fast saturation of the ISE inside the nanopipette. We developed a novel ion-selective detection system using a nanopipette that measures an alternating current (AC) signal mediated by saturated ionophores in a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane located at the conical shank of the nanopipette to solve the above problems. Small but reliable K<SUP>+</SUP> and Na<SUP>+</SUP> ionic current passing through a PVC membrane containing saturated bis(benzo-15-crown-5) and bis(12-crown-4) ionophore, respectively, could be selectively detected using the AC signal measurement system equipped with a lock-in amplifier.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpcbfk/2014/jpcbfk.2014.118.issue-19/jp502715q/production/images/medium/jp-2014-02715q_0005.gif'></P>

        An experimental investigation on the pressure characteristics of high speed self-resonating pulsed waterjets influenced by feeding pipe diameter

        The destructive power of a continuous waterjet issuing from a nozzle can be greatly enhanced by generating self-resonance in the nozzle assembly to produce a Self-resonating pulsed waterjet (SRPW). To further improve the performance of SRPW, effects of feeding pipe diameter on the pressure characteristics were experimentally investigated by measuring and analyzing the axial pressure oscillation peaks and amplitudes. Four organ-pipe nozzles of different chamber lengths and three feeding pipes of different diameters were employed. Results show that feeding pipe diameter cannot change the feature of SRPW of having an optimum standoff distance, but it slightly changes the oscillating frequency of the jet. It is also found that feeding pipe diameter significantly affects the magnitudes of pressure oscillation peak and amplitude, largely depending on the pump pressure and standoff distance. The enhancement or attenuation of the pressure oscillation peak and amplitude can be differently affected by the same feeding pipe diameter.

      • Suppression of the <i>β-carotene hydroxylase</i> gene increases β-carotene content and tolerance to abiotic stress in transgenic sweetpotato plants

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>β-carotene, a carotenoid that plays a key photo-protective role in plants is converted into zeaxanthin by β-carotene hydroxylase (CHY-β). Previous work showed that down-regulation of <I>IbCHY-β</I> by RNA interference (RNAi) results in higher levels of β-carotene and total carotenoids, as well as salt stress tolerance, in cultured transgenic sweetpotato cells. In this study, we introduced the RNAi-<I>IbCHY-β</I> construct into a white-fleshed sweetpotato cultivar (cv. Yulmi) by <I>Agrobacterium</I>-mediated transformation. Among the 13 resultant transgenic sweetpotato plants (referred to as RC plants), three lines were selected for further characterization on the basis of <I>IbCHY-β</I> transcript levels. The RC plants had orange flesh, total carotenoid and β-carotene contents in storage roots were 2-fold and 16-fold higher, respectively, than those of non-transgenic (NT) plants. Unlike storage roots, total carotenoid and β-carotene levels in the leaves of RC plants were slightly increased compared to NT plants. The leaves of RC plants also exhibited tolerance to methyl viologen (MV)-mediated oxidative stress, which was associated with higher 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity. In addition, RC plants maintained higher levels of chlorophyll and higher photosystem II efficiency than NT plants after 250 mM NaCl stress. Yield of storage roots did not differ significantly between RC and NT plants. These observations suggest that RC plants might be useful as a nutritious and environmental stress-tolerant crop on marginal lands around the world.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Transgenic sweet potato plants were generated by RNAi silencing of the <I>IbCHY-β</I> gene. </LI> <LI> Transgenic sweet potato plants had increased β-carotene and total carotenoid content. </LI> <LI> Transgenic sweet potato plants exhibited strong antioxidant capacity and salt stress tolerance. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Experimental investigation of the preferred Strouhal number used in self-resonating pulsed waterjet

        Self-resonating pulsed waterjet (SRPW) is superior to plain waterjet in many ways and is being employed in numerous applications. To further improve the performance of SRPW, the optimal value of the preferred Strouhal number (S d ), which is used to determine the chamber length of a self-resonating nozzle, was experimentally studied at inlet pressures of 10 MPa and 20 MPa. The axial pressure oscillation peak and amplitude were used to evaluate the performance of SRPW, in order to find the optimum S d value. Results show that S dvalue determines the self-resonance behavior of an organ-pipe nozzle and greatly affects the intensity of the axial pressure oscillation. Under the experimental conditions, the optimum S d values are 0.315 and 0.278 respectively, corresponding to inlet pressures of 10 MPa and 20 MPa. Compared with the default value of 0.3 obtained from air jet experiment, the optimum S d value at inlet pressure of 10 MPa is a little larger and oppositely a bit smaller at inlet pressure of 20 MPa. Thus, if the inlet pressure is not considered, S d value of 0.3 is reasonable for determining the chamber length of a self-resonating nozzle for generating effective SRPW.
