      • Utilisation of Municipal Waste Water in Aerobic Composting of Solid Organic Waste of Bhubaneswar City

        Panda, S.P.,Mishra, C.S.K.,Behera, D.K.,Kim, Jung Wk 서울大學校 環境大學院 2003 環境論叢 Vol.41 No.-

Approximately 600 tons of solid organic wastes and a huge bulk of sewage water are generated in Bhubaneswar city, Orissa, India daily endangering the urban environment. Solid wastes in windrows with sewage water inoculum decomposed faster compared to cow dung slurry and plain water treated wastes. C:N and C:P ratios declined relatively faster in sewage water treated windrows than cow dung slurry and water treated windrows during the experimental period of 45 days. The results indicated that the Bhubaneswar Municipal sewage water would be successfully utilised in solid waste composting.

Maximizing Biomass Productivity and CO2 Biofixation of Microalga, Scenedesmus sp. by Using Sodium Hydroxide

        ( Manoranjan Nayak ),( Swagat S Rath ),( Manikkannan Thirunavoukkarasu ),( Prasanna K Panda ),( Barada K Mishra ),( Rama C Mohanty ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2013 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.23 No.9

A series of experiments were carried out with three native strains of microalgae to measure growth rates, biomass, and lipid productivities. Scenedesmus sp. IMMTCC-6 had better biomass growth rate and higher lipid production. The growth, lipid accumulation, and carbon dioxide (CO2) consumption rate of Scenedesmus sp. IMMTCC-6 were tested under different NaOH concentrations in modified BBM. The algal strain showed the maximum specific growth rate (0.474/day), biomass productivity (110.9 mg l-1d-1), and CO2 consumption rate (208.4 mg l-1d-1) with an NaOH concentration of 0.005 M on the 8th day of cultivation. These values were 2.03-, 6.89-, and 6.88-fold more than the algal cultures grown in control conditions (having no NaOH and CO2). The CO2 fixing efficiency of the microalga with other alternative carbon sources like Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 was also investigated and compared. The optimized experimental parameters at shake-flask scale were implemented for scaling up the process in a self-engineered photobioreactor. A significant increase in lipid accumulation (14.23% to 31.74%) by the algal strain from the logarithmic to stationary phases was obtained. The algal lipids were mainly composed of C16/C18 fatty acids, and are desirable for biodiesel production. The study suggests that microalga Scenedesmus sp. IMMTCC-6 is an efficient strain for biodiesel production and CO2 biofixation using stripping solution of NaOH in a cyclic process.

Shear strengthening effect by bonded GFRP strips and transverse steel on RC T-beams

        Panda, K.C.,Bhattacharyya, S.K.,Barai, S.V. Techno-Press 2013 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.47 No.1

This study focuses on shear strengthening performance of simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams bonded by glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) strips in different configuration, orientations and transverse steel reinforcement in different spacing. Eighteen RC T-beams of 2.5 m span are tested. Nine beams are used as control beam. The stirrups are provided in three different spacing such as without stirrups and with stirrups at a spacing of 200 mm and 300 mm. Another nine beams are used as strengthened beams. GFRP strips are bonded in shear zone in U-shape and side shape with two types of orientation of the strip at $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to the longitudinal axis of the beam for each type of stirrup spacing. The experimental result indicates that the beam strengthened with GFRP strips at $45^{\circ}$ orientation to the longitudinal axis of the beam are much more effective than $90^{\circ}$ orientation. Also as transverse steel increases, the effectiveness of the GFRP strips decreases.

Shear behaviour of RC T-beams strengthenedwith U-wrapped GFRP sheet

        K.C.Panda,S. K. Bhattacharyya,S. V. Barai 국제구조공학회 2012 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.12 No.2

This paper presents an experimental investigation on the performance of 2.5 m long reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams strengthened in shear using epoxy bonded glass fibre fabric. Eighteen (18) full scale, simply supported RC T-beams are tested. Nine beams are used as control beam specimens with three different stirrups spacing without glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheet and rest nine beams are strengthened in shear with one, two, and three layers of GFRP sheet in the form of U-jacket around the web of T-beams for each type of stirrup spacing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, the cracking pattern and modes of failure of the GFRP strengthened RC T-beams. The test result indicates that for RC T-beams strengthened in shear with U-jacketed GFRP sheets, increase the load carrying capacity by 10-46%.

      • Influence of silpozz and rice husk ash on enhancement of concrete strength

        Panda, K.C.,Prusty, S.D. Techno-Press 2015 Advances in concrete construction Vol.3 No.3

This paper presents the results of a study undertaken to investigate the enhancement of concrete strength using Silpozz and Rice Husk Ash (RHA). The total percentage of supplementary cementitious material (SCM) substituted in this study was 20%. Six different concrete mixes were prepared such as without replacement of cement with silpozz and RHA (0% silpozz and 0% RHA) is treated as conventional concrete, whereas in other five concrete mixes cement was replaced by 20% of silpozz and RHA as (0% silpozz and 20% RHA), (5% silpozz and 15% RHA), (10% silpozz and 10% RHA), (15% silpozz and 5% RHA) and (20% silpozz and 0% RHA) with decreasing water-binder (w/b) ratio i.e. 0.375, 0.325 and 0.275 and increasing super plasticiser dose. New generation polycarboxylate base water reducing admixture i.e., Cera Hyperplast XR-W40 was used in this study. The results of this research indicate that as w/b decreases, super plasticiser dose need to be increased so as to increase the workability of concrete. The effects of replacing cement by silpozz and RHA on the compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength were evaluated. The concrete mixture with different combination of silpozz and RHA gives higher strength as compared to control specimen for all w/b ratios and also observed that the early age strength of concrete is more as compared to the later age strength. It is also observed that the strength enhancement of concrete mixture prepared with the combination of cement, silpozz and RHA is higher as compared to the concrete mixture prepared with cement and silpozz or cement and RHA.

      • Water Quality Assessment for Wells Located Near Municipal Waste Dumping Sites in Bhubaneswar City, India

        Panda, S.P.,Mishra, C.S.K.,Muduli, R.,Behera, D.K.,Kim, Jung Wk 서울대학교 환경대학원 2004 環境論叢 Vol.42 No.-

Certain physicochemical and biological characteristics of well waters located near major solid waste disposal sites of Bhubaneswar city were studied in the dry and wet seasons of 2001 and 2002. Higher levels of NO₃^(-), PO₄^(--), Cl^(-), SO₄^(---), Fe, Ca, Mg, total hardness, and total and fecal coliform bacteria have been observed in the water samples in wet seasons relative to dry seasons. Most of the physicochemical and biological parameters exceeded the Indian drinking water standards prescribed by IS:10500:1991. The results indicated that in wet seasons, the well waters within 50 meters from municipal waste dumping sites were not suitable for drinking.

Effect of Post Hatch Feed Deprivation on Yolk-sac Utilization and Performance of Young Broiler Chickens

Bhanja, S.K.,Anjali Devi, C.,Panda, A.K.,Shyam Sunder, G. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.8

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of post-hatch feed deprivation on yolk sac utilization andsubsequent performance of young broiler chickens (280) up to 35 days of age. The experimental treatments included access to feed at 8 h intervals after hatch, up to 48 h (0, 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 or 48 h). Water was offered ad libitum to all the groups immediately after placement. Results indicated that chicks with access to feed immediately after hatch used up the residual yolk more quickly. Access to feed between 8-24 h post-hatch, supported faster utilization of residual yolk compared to those chicks that remained unfed for 40-48 h (p<0.05). Further, deprivation of feed up to 24 h did not alter the lipid and protein contents in residual yolk, but fasting of chicks beyond 24 h (32, 40 and 48 h) led to retention of higher lipid and lower protein content in the yolk sac (p<0.05). At 7 days of age, the weights of proventiculus and gizzard were not affected by feed deprivation up to 48 h. However, the liver, pancreas and jejunum recorded significantly (p<0.05) heavier weights in chicks that were fed during the initial 24 h period compared to delayed feeding (32-48 h). Chicks fed within 24 h after hatch gained significantly (p<0.05) higher weight at 5 weeks of age than those that received feed between 32 and 48 h. Feed deprivation for 48 h was more detrimental to growth than 24-40 h. This study revealed the significance of early posthatch feeding (<24 h) on faster utilization of yolk sac nutrients and optimum development of intestines and organs, culminating in improved weight gain (>10.5%) of broilers at 5 weeks of age.

        Jena, T.,Panda, K.C. Techno-Press 2018 Advances in concrete construction Vol.6 No.1

This article reports the utilization of fly ash (FA) waste product from industry and silpozz which is an agro-waste from agriculture as an environmental friendly material in construction industry. The evaluation of strength and durability study was observed using FA and silpozz as a partial replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The studied parameters are compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength and bond strength as well as the durability study involves the acid soluble chloride (ASC), water soluble chloride (WSC), water absorption and sorptivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XRD of selected samples are also done. It reveals from the test results that the deterioration factor (DF) in compressive strength is 4% at 365 days. The DF of split tensile strength and flexural strength is 0.96% and 0.6% at 90 days respectively. The minimum slip is 1mm and 1.1mm after 28 days of testing bond strength for NWC and SWC sample respectively. The percentage decrease in bond strength is 10.35% for 28 days SWC samples. The pre-cast blended concrete samples performed better to chloride diffusion. Modulus of elasticity of SWC samples are also studied. The water absorption and sorptivity tests are conducted after 28 days of curing.
