        Novel signaling axis for ROS generation during K-Ras-induced cellular transformation

        Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are well known to be involved in oncogene-mediated cellular transformation. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying ROS generation in oncogene-transformed cells are unclear. In the present study, we found that oncogenic K-Ras induces ROS generation through activation of NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1), which is a critical regulator for the K-Ras-induced cellular transformation. NOX1 was activated by K-Ras-dependent translocation of p47<SUP>phox</SUP>, a subunit of NOX1 to plasma membrane. Of note, PKCδ, when it was activated by PDPK1, directly bound to the SH3-N domain of p47<SUP>phox</SUP> and catalyzed the phosphorylation on Ser348 and Ser473 residues of p47<SUP>phox</SUP> C-terminal in a K-Ras-dependent manner, finally leading to its membrane translocation. Notably, oncogenic K-Ras activated all MAPKs (JNK, ERK and p38); however, only p38 was involved in p47<SUP>phox</SUP>-NOX1-dependent ROS generation and consequent transformation. Importantly, K-Ras-induced activation of p38 led to an activation of PDPK1, which then signals through PKCδ, p47<SUP>phox</SUP> and NOX1. In agreement with the mechanism, inhibition of p38, PDPK1, PKCδ, p47<SUP>phox</SUP> or NOX1 effectively blocked K-Ras-induced ROS generation, anchorage-independent colony formation and tumor formation. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that oncogenic K-Ras activates the signaling cascade p38/PDPK1/PKCδ/p47<SUP>phox</SUP>/NOX1 for ROS generation and consequent malignant cellular transformation.

        Novel method for investigation of a K-Mg-based CO<sub>2</sub> sorbent for sorption-enhanced water-gas shift reaction

        CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorption reactions at 20 bar and two different temperatures (i.e., 180 and 220 <SUP>o</SUP>C) using a K-Mg-based CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorbent were carried out in a custom-designed high-pressure thermogravimetric analyzer (pressurized bubbling fluidized bed reactor on a scale) coupled with a gas chromatograph. The experimental apparatus, including the thermogravimetric analyzer, was custom-designed to measure weight changes caused by either CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorption or water sorption or both. Analysis of the CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorption reaction revealed that water sorption takes place rapidly with a moderate CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorption rate at the early stage of the reaction. Then, the reaction migrates to CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorption with simultaneous water desorption. Therefore, the mechanism of the CO<SUB>2</SUB> sorption reaction is assumed to consist of fast hydration of K<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>3</SUB> and MgO, formation and decomposition of KHCO<SUB>3</SUB>, and finally carbonation of Mg(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> resulting in MgCO<SUB>3</SUB> as the main product. K<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>3</SUB> is assumed to provide an efficient pathway for CO<SUB>2</SUB> and water to travel into the core region of the sorbent via a reversible reaction between K<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>3</SUB> and KHCO<SUB>3</SUB>.

        Verification of a tree canopy model and an example of its application in wind environment optimization

        In this paper, the method of introducing additional source/sink terms in the turbulence and momentum transport equations was applied to appropriately model the effect of the tree canopy. At first, the new additional source term for the turbulence frequency ω equation in the SST k-ω model was proposed through theoretical analogy. Then the new source/sink term model for the SST k-ω model was numerically verified. At last, the proposed source term model was adopted in the wind environment optimal design of the twin high-rise buildings of CABR (China Academy of Building Research). Based on the numerical simulations, the technical measure to ameliorate the wind environment was proposed. Using the new inflow boundary conditions developed in the previous studies, it was concluded that the theoretically reasonable source term model of the SST k-ω model was applicable for modeling the tree canopy flow and accurate numerical results are obtained.

        본 연구는 자체 제작한 전체 패드가 부착된 드로잉 금형을 이용하여 SUS, 연강, AI, 6:4황동 판재를 드로잉 가공하여 생산된 제품의 특성을 자유드로잉 하여 얻은 제품의 특성과 비교 분석하였다. SUS 판재의 경우 제품에 발생하는 현상은 벽 주름, 구변주름, 수직 파단, 드로잉상처, 이어링이 발생하였으며 길이변화는 펀치어깨부분에서 가장 많이 늘어남을 볼 수 있었고 벽 주름 부분에 있어서 접혀진 부분은 상대적으로 적게 늘어남을 볼 수 있었다. 연강 판재는 SUS 판재에서 보여준 현상을 나타내었으나 SUS 판재에 비해 수직 파단은 적게 일어난 반면 이어링이 더 크게 일어났다. AI 판재의 경우 수직 파단은 일어나지 않았으나 플랜지 주름과 밑면터짐이 발생하였다. 6:4황동의 경우는 전체패드의 AI 판재 드로잉에서와 같이 밑면터짐과 플랜지 주름의 발생이 일어났다.

      • 신체동작과 소품을 활용한 영어노래 활동이 대학생의 영어듣기와 흥미도에 미치는 사례연구

        Except with special cases, most of the college students in Korea show weakness on English listening more than reading. The reason might be that students learn reading first, even though they should be learning English as the way they learn their own language. In foreign language learning that focuses on listening, "Suggestopedia" which provides relaxed situations to improve learning concentrative -ness, and "Total Physical Response" which uses body movements have been already proved to be effective teaching. Then, if these two teaching methodologies are combined, there is a possibility that a teaching method using body movements and music can influence positive impact on English listening. In fact, a few studies suggested that music activities using body movements help to learn English(Gina, Yi. 2006; Rieg et al., 2008; Wiggins, 2007). However, studies investigating if this type of teaching method is applicable for college students are still rare. Therefore, the researcher proposed two research questions related to ‘English listening’ and ‘music activities’ for fourteen two-year-college students for this case study. One is to observe how singing activity using body movements and props affects college students" English listening. And the other is to investigate if this type of activity elicits interest on learning English. The former was done through English listening evaluation, and the latter through interview with the students and student survey. In this study, the participants have shown high interest in regard to music activities, and as a result of instruction, their English listening skill improved considerably. More important, 72% of the students who had negative attitudes on learning English changed to positive attitudes after the study. The interview and the survey suggested that the music activities were perceived as ‘fun’ and ‘easy‘ that it helped their learning. Therefore, the music activities in this study provided motivation to learn to students who gave up English learning more than to students who were confident.

      • 기초영어 과정에서 영어 팝송에 대한 대학생들의 반응

        It’s not difficult to find studies about English learning with English songs for young children or lower grades who enjoy to sing the songs regardless of languages. In that sense, most people commonly think that English pop songs will be useful or helpful for learning English. Nevertheless, there still remain questions of whether college students or adults sing pop songs very well without language barrier like young children do. Therefore, this paper was conducted to investigate college students’ responses of English pop songs in connection with English learning – listening, speaking, reading, grammar, and vocabulary. The study was held 2 times in 2-year college located in the east part of Geonggi-do. Participants were 81 students in the first and 74 students in the second in basic English classes. English pop songs were presented about 15 minutes during the end of each class. In this study, six case studies are introduced: 김진성, 강문구, 2013; 이헬렌계순, 2013; Carmen Cheong-Clinch, 2009; Yi-Chun Chen & Pi-Ching Chen, 2009; Paola X. Romero, 2017; Swasti Nourmawati, 2012. Data collections are by means of questionnaire surveys created by author. The each questionnaire survey uses a five-point Likert type scale. In the first surveys, the students’ positive responses of the English pop songs were diminished at the end of the course even though they were pretty high before starting the course. In the second surveys, however, the results of the survey after course were more positive than the one before the course. To conclude, the difference of the results between the first and the second survey were depend on frequency, familiarity, and learning method of English pop songs.
