• A Multi-voxel Pattern Analysis of Neural Representation of Vibrotactile Location

        Junsuk Kim,Yoon Gi Chung,Soon-Cheol Chung,Jang-Yeon Park,Heinrich Bulthoff,Sung-Phil Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2013 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2013 No.10

Previous neural decoding studies have mainly focused on discrimination of activation patterns evoked by active movements. Nonetheless, comparatively, little attention has been devoted toward understanding how brain signals are observed with passive stimulus. In this study, we examined whether the stimulus locations on between fingers, one of the most fundamental features of passive vibrotactile stimulation, can be distinguished from human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Whole brain searchlight multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) has found two brain regions, which make a contribution to decode stimulus sites, in contralateral posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and contralateral secondary somatosensory cortex (S2). No significant area for the decoding of activity to stimulus site in primary somatosensory cortex (S1), which is well-developed brain region for finger somatotopy. On the other hand, a whole brain univariate group analysis has discovered activity in S1, not in PPC and S2 areas. These results suggest that PPC and S2 regions play a key role in the differentiation of passive vibrotactile stimulus locations, and thus decode tactile events from finger somatotopic.

A Comparative Study of AI translation - Google Translate and Papago

Junsuk Park 한국중원언어학회 2022 언어학연구 Vol.- No.65

Since the mid 2010s, there have been a number of studies on the reliability of the translation capability of AI translation programs. Shin (2017) notes how machine translation systems have developed from a translation researcher’s perspective. Johnson et al. (2016) proposes a simple solution to use a single Neural Machine Translation (NMT) model to translate between multiple languages. Kim (2017) discusses how human spiritual aspect can be kept intact in the AI technology-dominated society. Kwak et al. (2020) conducted a study on AI translation focusing on proverb translation. Besides, Bahdanau et al. (2015) and Chung (2020) conducted research on machine translation. Following Park (2017, 2018)’s seminal research on the accuracy of the translation capability of Google Translate, this study investigates whether Google Translate and Papago, a translation program developed in Korea, have acquired native-like ability in translating sentences with semantically ambiguous Korean expressions such as –ya hayssta (had to vs was supposed to), -su issessta (could vs was able to), construction involving negation and sayngkakhata (think), mitta (believe), nukkita (feel) + embedded clause, and –cul alassta (knew or thought).

Understanding Food Waste in Bulk in Incheon: Based on Naver Blog Big Data

Junsuk Choi,Joonhyeong Joseph Kim,Sang Mook Lee People & Global Business Association 2024 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.29 No.1

Purpose: This study aims to provide insight into the contemporary food waste issue for the better management of food waste in large quantities in Incheon, one specific region in Korea, based on the analysis of the Naver Blog corpus, employing analysis techniques including text mining and LDA topic modeling. Design/methodology/approach: In order to achieve the aforementioned objectives, the current study has employed the R program for the analysis (e.g., TF, tf-idf, correlation, and LDA) of 868 Naver Blog posts which included information about food waste, and/or garbage produced in bulk by foodservice operators in the context of Incheon. Findings: The frequently addressed keywords in the dataset include food, waste, garbage, processor, workplace, food waste dewaterer, microorganism, pulverizer, plastic, compressor, restaurant, sink, cafeteria, and bean sprouts. The correlation analysis demonstrated that waste is largely generated by food material, and food material is closely related to specific types of private companies (e.g., cafeterias) and public places (e.g., military bases, prisons, hospi-tals). The LDA identified three topics: the implications for food waste produced by the workplace, recent equipment and technologies used for food waste processing, and effect of waste on the environment and call for remedies. Research limitations/implications: While this study has shed light on contemporary issues in relation to food waste in Incheon, it is suggested that the involved parties in the waste management industry pay more attention to the development of effective waste management strategies by hospitality operators in a specific region. Originality/value: This study responds to a lack of understanding underpinning foodservice operators who produce a large quantity of food waste in Incheon, albeit much attention has been paid to some recent research on food waste.

        On Movement

        Junsuk Park 한국중원언어학회 2020 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.54

In this empirical research, we delve into the long-held discussion between raising and control and discuss the pros and cons of the movement theory of control (Hornstein, 2001; Hornstein & Polinsky, 2010). Following Sportiche (1988) and Bobaljik (1998), this study illustrates that a quantifier which appears and gets stranded within the embedded infinitive clause of control construction exhibits syntactic behaviors which cannot be accounted for under Hornstein (2001)’s MTC framework. Through analysis of numerous English and Korean data, this study shows that, unlike a quantifier in raising, a quantifier stranded in the embedded clause of control construction is not always associated with the matrix subject. In many instances, a quantifier base-generated in the embedded infinitive clause of control construction is observed to be associated with some other elements which are outside the matrix CP. This phenomenon is observed uniformly both in English and Korean. From these findings, this study concludes that a quantifier’s syntactic behaviors exhibited in control construction can only be accurately and properly explained under the PRO theorem(Chomsky 1981, 1986), hence no movement.

A Study of the Syntactic Nature of English Accusative Case and Korean Accusative Case

        Junsuk Park 한국중원언어학회 2016 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.41

This paper explores whether the fixed SVO English word-order has contributed to the extended use of accusative case in English. If so, this study will further explores to what extent it does so. For this purpose, this study compares English accusative case and Korean accusative case-marker along with considerable examples. First of all, this study examines what syntactic factors enable non-objects to receive accusative case in English and Korean. This study refers to previous theoretical perspectives that clausal subjects do not allow several syntactic operations such as subject auxiliary inversion and sentence-initial topics. Moreover, this study observes that accusative case-marked subjects exhibit exactly the same syntactic patterns as clausal subjects with respect to these syntactic operations. Based on these, I argue that accusative case-marked subjects in English are topicalized DPs just like clausal subjects. This study also examines what syntactic or other linguistic factors are at work in marking accusative lul on adverbials in Korean. Lastly, I argue that ka or i marked objects in siphta construction are a case of topicalization.

A Study of the Derivation of Relative Clauses : Focusing on Case-Assignment and Co-indexing

        Park, Junsuk 한국중앙영어영문학회 2020 영어영문학연구 Vol.62 No.2

This paper aims to provide a new account for the derivation of relative clauses. Under the traditional framework, relative clauses are the result of two major operations: base-generation and movement of a relative pronoun and merge of an antecedent DP with the relative clausal CP. This study reveals that this line of approach is vulnerable to issues such as the number checking of the relative CP-internal verb and co-indexing of anaphors. This study also shows that the above two issues cannot be accounted for without the violation of PIC and Binding Principle A. As discussed in the paper, a nominative relative pronoun which is based-generated cannot check the number feature of a relative CP-internal verb and co-index with anaphors. To address these issues, this study proposes that a relative clause is derived by the movement of the antecedent. This study also argues that the antecedent which moves to the edge of the relative clause after its base-generation, checks the number feature of the relative CP’s internal verb and co-indexes with anaphors consecutively. Lastly, from German data, this study suggests that the antecedent receive Case from the matrix clause, not from any constituent of the relative clause in English.

Pseudo 1-D Micro/Nanofluidic Device for Exact Electrokinetic Responses

        Kim, Junsuk,Kim, Ho-Young,Lee, Hyomin,Kim, Sung Jae American Chemical Society 2016 Langmuir Vol.32 No.25

Conventionally, a 1-D micro/nanofluidic device, whose nanochannel bridged two microchannels, was widely chosen in the fundamental electrokinetic studies; however, the configuration had intrinsic limitations of the time-consuming and labor intensive tasks of filling and flushing the microchannel due to the high fluidic resistance of the nanochannel bridge. In this work, a pseudo 1-D micro/nanofluidic device incorporating air valves at each microchannel was proposed for mitigating these limitations. High Laplace pressure formed at liquid/air interface inside the microchannels played as a virtual valve only when the electrokinetic operations were conducted. The identical electrokinetic behaviors of the propagation of ion concentration polarization layer and current voltage responses were obtained in comparison with the conventional 1-D micro/nanofluidic device by both experiments and numerical simulations. Therefore, the suggested pseudo 1-D micro/nanofluidic device owned not only experimental conveniences but also exact electrokinetic responses.
