      • DRG2 Deficient Mice Exhibit Impaired Motor Behaviors with Reduced Striatal Dopamine Release

        <P>Developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein 2 (DRG2) was first identified in the central nervous system of mice. However, the physiological function of DRG2 in the brain remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that knocking out DRG2 impairs the function of dopamine neurons in mice. DRG2 was strongly expressed in the neurons of the dopaminergic system such as those in the striatum (Str), ventral tegmental area (VTA), and substantia nigra (SN), and on neuronal cell bodies in high-density regions such as the hippocampus (HIP), cerebellum, and cerebral cortex in the mouse brain. DRG2 knockout (KO) mice displayed defects in motor function in motor coordination and rotarod tests and increased anxiety. However, unexpectedly, DRG2 depletion did not affect the dopamine (DA) neuron population in the SN, Str, or VTA region or dopamine synthesis in the Str region. We further demonstrated that dopamine release was significantly diminished in the Str region of DRG2 KO mice and that treatment of DRG2 KO mice with l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), a dopamine precursor, rescued the behavioral motor deficiency in DRG2 KO mice as observed with the rotarod test. This is the first report to identify DRG2 as a key regulator of dopamine release from dopamine neurons in the mouse brain.</P>

        Activity-guided fractionation of the roots of Anthriscus sylvestris resulted in the isolated and characterization of five cytotoxic compounds, deoxypodophyllotoxin (1), falcarindiol (2), and angeloyl podophyllotoxin (5) from the hexane soluble fraction and morelensin (3), bursehernin (4) from the choloroform soluble fraction. It is the first report of the occurrence of compound 5 in nature.

        유기성 폐수처리 공정에서 발생되는 악취저감에 관한 연구

        현재 우리나라는 산업화·공업화의 발달에 따른 하수도 보급증대로 생활폐수와 하수슬러지의 발생량이 증가하고 이에 따라 악취의 문제도 가속화 되고 있다. 하수슬러지의 발생량이 증가함에 따라 악취관련 민원도 해마다 급증하는 추세로 2010년 기준으로 7,247건에 이른다. 하수 및 유기성 폐수(가축분뇨·분뇨 등) 처리 시 발생되는 슬러지(생슬러지, 잉여슬러지)의 성상은 수분 외에 자연석에 근접한 무기물과 비료성분이 있는 유기물로 구성되어 있으며, 수처리 과정에서 뿐만 아니라 슬러지 처리 과정에서도 많은 악취가 발생하고 있다. 이 악취를 해결하기 위하여 수처리 과정의 구조물 상부를 복개하거나 커버를 씌워 발생된 악취를 강제로 흡입하여 탈취기에서 탈취한 후 대기중으로 방출하고 있는 실정이나, 100% 포집이 어렵고 악취가 새어나가고 시설비 및 유지관리비가 높아 운영에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있는 실정이다. 또한 상기한 처리 과정에서 발생되는 상징수 및 탈리 여액은 오염도가 매우 높아 이를 재처리하기 위하여 하수 유입부분 혹은 포기조 유입 부분으로 이송하는데 심한 악취가 발산되고 탈수된 케익 또한 안정화가 이루어지지 않아 파리, 모기 등 유해 곤충의 서식지가 되고 있어 처리장 근무자는 물론 주민의 보건 위생에 많은 피해를 주고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구에서 분뇨, 축산분뇨 및 생슬러지를 처리하는 과정에서 발생하는 근본적인 악취를 저감시키기 위하여 악취발생 억제 및 제거능력을 가진 슬러지를 배양 시킬 수 있는 배양조를 설치하였다. 배양 된 슬러지는 처리과정을 통해 각 공정도의 유입됨으로써 악취저감효율을 알아보고자 한다. 또한 배양된 슬러지의 미생물들의 군집종과 군집구조를 알아봄으로써 처리능력에 대해서 연구하였다. With the development of industrialization and manufacturization in Korea, the penetration rate of sewerage has increased, and thereby living wastewater and sewage sludge have more occurred. As a result, the problem of odors has become more severe. With the rising sewage sludge, the number of civil complaints about odors has been on the rise every year, reaching 7,247 cases as of 2010. In terms of shape, sludge (raw sludge and excess sludge) that occurs in the process of treating sewage and organic wastewater (e.g., livestock excrements, feces and urine) is comprised of moisture, inorganic matter close to a natural stone, and organic matter. A lot of offensive odors occur not only in the water treatment process, but in the sludge treatment process. As a solution to the problem of offensive odors, the upper part of a structure has been opened or covered in the water treatment process in order to absorb the offensive odors by force and then emit them in the air. However, in such a method, it is hard to collect offensive odors 100% and thus the odors leak, and facility and maintenance costs are so high that it is difficult to operate relevant systems. In addition, upper cleaned water and decanted water that occur in the above treatment process have a high pollution level. Therefore, severe offensive odors can occur in the process of transferring them to sewage inflow part or aeration tank which is required to retreat them. Dehydrated cake also fails to be stabilized. Harmful insects, such as flies and mosquitos, are able to inhabit. As a result, it greatly damages not only workers in treatment plants, but health and hygiene of residents. Accordingly, it has been required to develop the technology to remove high-concentration matters that make offensive odors fundamentally. In order to reduce offensive odors emissions from the process of treating feces, urine, livestock excrements, and raw sludge, to stabilize sludge, to corrode sludge to use the final sludge dehydrated cake as a soil conditioner, this researcher installed a culture tank that has the ability to control and remove offensive odors and can culture sewage treatment excess sludge and studied offensive odor emission reduction efficiency rate and the treatment abilities of microorganisms.

        Nickel-Calcium Phosphate/Hydroxyapatite Catalysts for Partial Oxidation of Methane to Syngas : Effect of Composition

        Nickel-calcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite catalysts have recently been reported to exhibit high activity and selectivity in partial oxidation of methane (POM). In this work the optimum composition was determined. The optimum mole ratio of Ca/PO₄ was around 10/6 and that of Ni/PO₄ was in a range from 1.0/6 to 3.0/6 with the optimum Ca/PO₄, and the activity could be related with the amount of metallic nickel. In a temperature range from ca.400 to 700K, an apparent autothermal reaction was observed to occur in some cases. This is due to the fact that the actual catalyst temperature is higher than the measured temperature, which comes from the exothermic nature of the reaction. The mixing sequence of the precursors during the catalyst preparation does little affect the catalyst activity and characteristics. Deactivation of the catalyst occurred slowly, but the catalyst could easily be regenerated. Moreover, the nickel-calcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite catalyst showed higher activity than the nickel-strontium phosphate catalyst.

        본 논문은 Push Up 운동 추적을 위해서 개발한 웨어러블 기기인 HUX (Health User Experience) Device 의 개발을 연구한다. 이 디바이스는 ‘Push Up 운동 시 사용자의 운동 상태 측정’을 목표로 하여 운동 정보를 사용자들이 알기 쉽게 시각화해 주는 방향으로 진행한다. 근력운동에 대해 압력센서로 모아진 데이터를 통하여 사용자에게 실시간으로 적합한 운동을 진행한 횟수를 LED Counting 으로 표현한다. 본 연구를 통해 개발된 디바이스 형태로 현대인들의 운동부족과 혼자 운동하게 되었을 때 발생하는 정보부족을 해결하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. In this paper, to study the development of HUX (Health User Experience) Device of the wearable device was developed for the Push Up motion tracking. This device, traveling in the direction that will visualize the user easy to understand the movement information with the aim of ‘Push Up measurement of the user"s motion state at the time of exercise’ The strength movement to express the number of times subjected to the real time at the right exercise to the user via the data gathered by the pressure sensor LED Counting. And it is expected to contribute to solve the lack of information that occurs when it is practiced alone and lack of exercise in modern man in the form of devices that have been developed throughout the study.

        Clinical Characteristics of Marfan Syndrome in Korea

        Background and Objectives: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a connective tissue disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance and a highly variable clinical spectrum. However, there are limited data available on the clinical features of Korean patients with MFS. The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of Korean patients with MFS. Subjects and Methods: We included all patients who were diagnosed with MFS between January 1995 and May 2015 at a single tertiary medical center. Patients with an MFS-related disorder including MASS phenotype (myopia, mitral valve prolapse, borderline and nonprogressive aortic root dilatation, skeletal findings, and striae), mitral valve prolapse syndrome, and ectopia lentis syndrome were excluded. A total of 343 Korean patients aged ≥15 years who satisfied the revised Ghent nosology were included. Results: The mean patient age at diagnosis was 35.9±12.6 years and 172 (50.1%) patients were male. Median follow-up duration was 52.8 months. A total of 303 patients (88.6%) had aortic root dilatation with Z score ≥2 or aortic root dissection. Ectopia lentis was relatively less common (163 patients, 55.1%) and systemic score ≥7 was found in 217 patients (73.8%). Among 219 probands, a family history of MFS was present in 97 patients (44.5%) and sporadic cases in 121 patients (55.5%). Among the 157 probands who underwent genetic analysis, 141 (89.8%) had an FBN1 mutation associated with aortic root aneurysm/dissection. Aortic dissection (AD) or intramural hematoma (IMH) was identified in 110 patients (32.1%). Among the 221 patients without AD or IMH, descending aortic aneurysms were identified in 19 patients (8.6%). Two hundred thirteen patients (62%) underwent cardiovascular surgery of any type. Eight patients died during follow-up. Conclusion: We described the clinical characteristics and outcomes of Korean MFS patients. Cardiovascular manifestations were commonly detected and FBN1 mutation was present in approximately 90% of patients. In contrast, ectopia lentis was identified in approximately half of patients. Our findings will be informative for the evaluation of patients with MFS.

        Characterization of a Nickel-Strontium Phosphate Catalyst for Partial Oxidation of Methane

        A nickel-strontium phosphate catalyst was recently reported to exhibit high activity and selectivity in partial oxidation of methane(POM). Further characterizations hane been performed in the present work in order to better understand the characterizations of this catalyst. TEM showed that very fine nickel particles of a few nanometers of the size were present in the needle shape in the sample after the reaction. TPR showed the presence of three nickel species, reduced during the reaction. As the calcination time during the preparation increased, the total re-oxidation temperature became higher. This is considered due to larger crystallite size owing to the longer calcination, which results in a smaller amount of nickel coming out of the matrix to the surface.

      • “Positive Incentive” Approach To Enhance the Operational Stability of Quantum Dot-Based Light-Emitting Diodes

        <P>Balanced charge injection promises high efficiency of quantum dot-based light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs). The most widely used approach to realize charge injection balance impedes the injection rate of the dominant charge carrier with energetic barriers. However, these approaches often accompany unwanted outcomes (e.g., the increase in operation voltage) that sacrifice the operational stability of devices. Herein, a “positive incentive” approach is proposed to enhance the efficiency and the operational stability of QD-LEDs. Specifically, the supply of hole, an inferior carrier than its counterpart, is facilitated by adopting a thin fullerene (C<SUB>60</SUB>) interlayer at the interface between the hole injection layer (MoO<SUB><I>X</I></SUB>) and hole transport layer (4,4′-bis(9-carbazolyl)-1,1′-biphenyl). The C<SUB>60</SUB> interlayer boosts the hole current by eliminating the universal energy barrier, lowers the operation voltage of QD-LEDs, and enhances the charge balance in the QD emissive layer within the working device. Consequently, QD-LEDs benefitting from the adoption of the C<SUB>60</SUB> interlayer exhibit significantly enhanced device efficiency and operation stability. Grounded on the quantitative assessment of the charge injection imbalance within the QD emissive layer, the impact of electrical parameters of QD-LEDs on their optoelectronic performance and operational stability is also discussed.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
