In the recent 20 years, extreme droughts have occurred more widespread over the western U.S. causing billions dollar worth of damages and enormous in 2021. Particularly, extreme water cycle in California such as the 2013-2014 drought and 2016-2017 flood are accompanied by persistent anomalous upper-level atmospheric circulation patterns over North America. The structure of this circulation pattern is anomalous ridge near the west coast and the trough over the eastern seaboard and the location and polarity is distinctly matched with the winter stationary wave over North America which is called North America Winter Dipole (NAWD). On the other hand, its relationship to the Pacific-North American (PNA) pattern and North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) are the traditionally well-recognized patterns across North America remains unresolved. Here we report the linkage between three dominant winter atmospheric teleconnection patterns in the last 70 years. and they have remarkable relationship in recent decades and these relationship are revealed with winter hydroclimate variables over western U.S. Possible mechanisms for this phenomenon include the long-term change of the upper-level Jetstream under global warming.

Abstract

Background

In Traditional Korean and Chinese medicine, the herbal remedy Yijin (Erchen)-Tang (YJT) is widely used to treat obesity-related disorders, and its therapeutic potential has been demonstrated in numerous studies. However, the systemic effect of YJT on obesity status and change of lipid metabolism by YJT still remains unknown.

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic mechanism of the YJT on obesity by using lipidomics.

Methods

To evaluate the effects of treatment with YJT on obesity, C57BL/6 J mice were fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol (HFHC, 40% fat and 1% cholesterol) diet for 8 weeks and treated them with YJT for an additional 6 weeks. We then performed untargeted lipidomic analysis using ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry mass spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistical analysis.

Results

YJT ameliorated obesity induced systemic inflammation and improved insulin resistance. Additionally, YJT protected against HFHC-diet-induced hepatic inflammation. To explore specific changes in lipid metabolism associated with the therapeutic effects of YJT, we performed untargeted lipid profiling of the plasma. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) score plots showed that YJT altered the lipid metabolic pattern of HFHC mice. In particular, ceramides and triglycerides with saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids were significantly changed by YJT, which were significantly associated with insulin resistance, the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications and adipocytokine signaling pathway in pathway enrichment analysis. Thus, we analyzed the changes in adipocytes and adipokine caused by YJT, and confirmed that YJT alleviated adipocytes inflammation and macrophage infiltration, and reversed HFHC-induced alterations in leptin and adiponectin levels in adipose tissue and plasma.

Conclusion

These data suggest that YJT ameliorates obesity-induced systemic inflammation and insulin resistance by regulating lipid metabolism, and demonstrated that lipidomic profiling is a useful method to investigate the therapeutic effects of herbal decoctions in traditional Korean and Chinese medicine.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

This paper presents an experimental measurement of the thermal conductivity of bovine cortical bone by an improved parallel plate method to increase the accuracy of the measurement. An experimental apparatus was designed to measure the thermal conductivity of the cortical bone using a reference material with a known thermal conductivity by the heat transfer through the samples. To improve the measurement accuracy, a reference material was selected as quartz, which is of the same order of magnitude of the thermal conductivity of bovine cortical bone reported in the existing literature. Additionally, the temperatures at the heat source and heat sink were set to <TEX>${\pm}5^{\circ}C$</TEX> from the ambient temperature to reduce the inevitable heat loss in the measurement. The temperature offset was determined numerically. The current experimental measurement was validated by an in-house finite-difference numerical program. The heat loss in the measurement was predicted from the numerical program. The thermal conductivity of the bovine cortical bone was then determined to be <TEX>$0.55{\pm}0.02W/mK$</TEX> with compensating heat loss.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been extensively investigated to treat cancer since it induces cell death through the activation of photosensitizers by light. However, its success has been hampered by the insufficient selectivity of photosensitizers to tumor tissues. In an attempt to increase the therapeutic efficacy of PDT by targeting the photosensitizer specifically to the tumor site, we prepared chlorin e6 (Ce6)-loaded gold-stabilized carboxymethyl dextran nanoparticles (Ce6-GS-CNPs). Ce6-GS-CNPs possessed highly stable nanostructures and no significant change was observed in their particle size in the presence of serum for 6 days. When Ce6-GS-CNPs were intravenously injected into tumor-bearing mice, they exhibited prolonged circulation in the body and gradually accumulated in the tumor tissue. Under laser irradiation of the tumor site which could be recognized by the near-infrared fluorescence imaging system, Ce6-GS-CNPs effectively suppressed tumor growth. Overall, Ce6-GS-CNPs might have potential as nanomedicine for image-guided photodynamic cancer therapy.

Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean medicine is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in Korean medicine lacks experimental evidence. According to Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, the earliest book of herbal medicine, Bupleuri Radix (BR) and Scutellariae Radix (SR) possess the Sangsoo relationship, which means they have synergistic features when used together. Therefore these two are frequently used together in prescriptions such as Sosiho-Tang. In this study, we used the network pharmacological method to predict the interaction between these two herbs and then investigated the effects of BR, SR, and their combination on obesity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. BR, SR, and BR-SR mixture significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenic factors, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha (C/EBPα), and their downstream genes, Adipoq, aP2, and Lipin1 in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the BR-SR mixture had synergistic effects compared with BR or SR on inhibition of adipogenic-gene expressions. BR and SR also inhibited the protein expressions of PPARγ and C/EBPα. Furthermore, the two extracts successfully activated AMP-activated protein kinase alpha (AMPK α), the key regulator of energy metabolism. When compared to those of BR or SR, the BR-SR mixture showed higher inhibition rates of PPARγ and C/EBPα, along with higher activation rate of AMPK. These results indicate a new potential antiobese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in Korean medicine.

The Personal Color Makeover: An Alternative Means to a Better Life in Neoliberal South Korea
Jueun LEE 한국학중앙연구원 한국학중앙연구원 2023 Korea Journal Vol.63 No.1
Personal color, known as a set of colors that harmonize with a person’s natural physical coloring, rose rapidly as a trend among young Korean women in the 2010s. Based on anthropological fieldwork at personal color consultation studios, this study analyzes personal color as an alternative aesthetic makeover practice to plastic surgery in which the body is deemed the source of originality instead of change. Instead of altering the body, improvement through personal color is supposed to be achieved through a change in color consumption, about which the consultant provides guidance as a choice connoisseur. Through the journey of personal color makeover, the customer is encouraged to transform into a better-looking, efficient color consumer and an estimable authentic self with a strong sense of individuality and self-esteem. Deeply related to producing each individual as an attractive and marketable personal brand, the practice erects itself as an alternative means to increase one’s value and chances in life— an option that is seemingly more body-positive than plastic surgery but entails a more ceaseless endeavor of self-government in all aspects of everyday life for the production of a better self.
