Background/Aims To evaluate the effectiveness of pantoprazole magnesium (pantoprazole-Mg) 40 mg in the relief of esophageal and extra- esophageal symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), particularly night-time symptoms. Methods Patients (aged 18-50 years) with 3-month history of heartburn and/or acid regurgitation plus at least one other symptom in the last week were enrolled in a nationwide, prospective and observational study in Mexico. Patients received pantoprazole-Mg 40 mg once daily during 4 weeks. Symptoms were assessed through a physician-administered structured interview and the patient- completed ReQuest in PracticeTM questionnaire. Night-time GERD was defined as arousal from sleep during the night due to GERD-associated symptoms. Results Out of 4,343 patients included at basal visit, 3,665 were considered for the effectiveness per protocol analysis. At baseline, patients had a median of 8 GERD related symptoms. Patients with night-time GERD symptoms (42.7%) were more likely to have extra-esophageal symptoms (P < 0.001) than other GERD patients. Pantoprazole-Mg 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks improved a broad range of GERD-associated symptoms from baseline (80% reduction on physicians assessments; 68-77% reduction on ReQuest in PracticeTM dimensions), including both day- and night-time GERD symptoms; improvements were the greatest for extra-esophageal symptoms in patients with night-time symptoms. Pantoprazole-Mg was well tolerated. Conclusions Pantoprazole-Mg 40 mg significantly improved a broad range of esophageal and extra-esophageal GERD related symptoms including sleep disturbances, as well as well-being, in patients with daytime or night-time GERD, making it a good option for patients with GERD, especially when extra-esophageal and night-time symptoms are present. IoET enabled classrooms to foster Education 4.0 in Mexican elementary schools
Juan Contreras-Castillo,Pedro C. Santana-Mancilla,Norma Barón-Ramírez,Elba Abigail Morales Vanegas APEC국제교육협력원 2020 Asia-Pacific Cybereducation Journal Vol.16 No.1
The changes of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) are inevitable in all areas of daily life, from government to healthcare and commerce, including the educational field. Education 4.0 brings potential challenges to schools around the globe, such as digital technology, personalized data, and a connected world. Thus, this paper presents a Mexican case study about a classroom enhanced with digital technology to study the challenges that both students and teachers face to acquire and transmit the skills and competencies that Industry 4.0 requires. As a preliminary result, we found that the probability of students accepting this technology for learning is very high.
Graphene exfoliation with supercritical fluids
Rodolfo Morales Ibarra,Motonobu Goto,Juan Garc?a‑Serna,Saida Mayela Garc?a Montes 한국탄소학회 2021 Carbon Letters Vol.31 No.1
Graphene is an unconventional material with a two-dimensional hexagonal crystalline array of elemental carbon atoms and outstanding properties; accordingly, a desirable objective in the line of research of graphene is the development of novel and more productive methods of synthesis, validating its properties and applications. In our exploratory research, we have effectively exfoliated graphene from graphite using supercritical fluids (water, ethanol and carbon dioxide). The exfoliated graphene was properly characterized; via scanning electron microscopy, the morphology of graphene was observed; Raman spectra confirmed the exfoliation of graphene depicting the characteristic shift towards smaller Raman number in the 2D band (2676 cm?1) compared to that of graphite (? 2700 cm?1); COMMIT; transmission electron microscopy analysis exhibited the crystalline structure of graphene attesting also the expected transparency of exfoliated layers. Graphene exfoliation from graphite by supercritical fluids promises to be a simple large-scale method for graphene production.

Acrylamide can be generated from food componentsduring tortilla chips frying. Thus, the aim of thisresearch was to study different nixtamalization processesas traditional (TNP) with lime [Ca(OH)2], ecological(ENP) with CaCO3, classic nixtamalization (CNP) thatuses wood ash and extrusion (EXT) with no Ca?2 sourceon mitigating the acrylamide formation in deep-fat fryingtortilla chips. Acrylamide quantification was done throughHPLC–UV. Lower acrylamide content in tortilla chips wasfor CNP with 46.3 lg/kg, followed by TNP with 55.0 lg/kg, ENP with 694.6 lg/kg and EXP with 1443.4 lg/kg. Differences in acrylamide values among samples can berelated to effect of cations (Ca2?, Mg2?, Fe2?, Zn2?, Na?and K?) present in wood ashes, lime and salts used as rawmaterials. Correlation of (r = 0.85; p\0.0005) wasobserved in color of tortilla chips, moisture, texture, blisters, and oil with acrylamide. Nixtamalization process is aneffective and inexpensive strategy for acrylamidemitigation.

Obesity is an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in the body that exacerbates metabolic and inflammatory processes, and impairs the health of afflicted individuals. β-caryophyllene is a natural sesquiterpene that is a dietary cannabinoid with anti-inflammatory properties and potential activity against metabolic diseases. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of β-caryophyllene on C57BL/6 mice using a diet-induced obesity model. Male mice were randomly assigned to the following groups over a 16-week period: (1) standard diet as lean control, (2) high-fat diet (HFD) as obese control, and (3) HFD + β-caryophyllene with β-caryophyllene at 50 mg/kg. Treatment with β-caryophyllene improved various metabolic parameters including increased total body weight, fasting glucose levels, oral-glucose tolerance, insulin tolerance, fasting triglycerides, adipocyte hypertrophy, and liver macrovesicular steatosis. β-caryophyllene also modulated the levels and expression of immune response factors including adiponectin, leptin, insulin, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-a, and Toll-like receptor-4. Our data indicate that chronic supplementation with β-caryophyllene can improve relevant metabolic and immunological processes in obese mice. This protocol was approved by the Institutional Committee for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals from the University of Guadalajara with protocol code CUCEI/CINV/CICUAL-01/2022.

Native and heated hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) hydrolysates were isolated by hydrolysis with pepsin at pH 2.0 in situ in a cation exchange membrane to isolate and identify antibacterial peptides of the HEWL hydrolysates. Native and heated HEWL was partially hydrolyzed with pepsin at pH 2.0. The fractions were eluted with 5 M ammonia to identify 23 antibacterial peptides using a tandem mass spectrometry. Then, these fractions were eluted with a solution of NaCl 1 M, and seven positively charged peptides f(23–28) YSLGNW, f(122–129) AWIRGCRL, f(123–129) WIRGCRL, f(124–129) IRGCRL, f(82–96) ALLSSDITASVNCAK, f(103–129) VAWRNRCKGTDVQAWIRGCRL, and f(97–123) KIVSDGNGMNAWVAWRNRCKGT were identified using tandem mass spectrometry. Native HEWL hydrolysate presented an enzymatic activity of 23.0%, heated HEWL hydrolysate at pH 6.0 presented a residual enzymatic activity of 22.0%, and heated HEWL hydrolysate at pH 7.0 presented an enzymatic activity of 21.33%. Native and heated HEWL hydrolysate presented antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus carnosus. Native HEWL hydrolysate presented a higher enzymatic activity than heated HEWL hydrolysates.
