        Vegetable consumption is associated with health benefits. Recently, the interest in these food groups has grown among due to the identification of new compound in their chemical composition. Most of the vegetables are cooked by blanching, boiling, steaming, microwaving before consumed. These cooking processes may change not only food physical characteristics but also chemical composition. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of different cooking methods on phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity in Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam stem. The result of study, Total polyphenol of phytochemical in Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam stem was 6.88-12.65 mg GAE/100 g and flavonoid was 3.16-10.46 mg CE/100 g. Compared with the raw of Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam stem, all cooking methods were found to significant correlations between the antioxidant activity assessed by ABTS, DPPH and polyphenol(p<0.05). These results can be provide the basic data how to prevent lose of nutrition in Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam stem when cooking.

        Linking Goal-Directedness, Leader Support, and Employee Outcomes

        본 연구는 조직의 목표지향성(goal-directedness)이 조직구성원의 직무만족과 이직의도에 미치는 영향을 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 선행연구들에서는 효과적인 조직목표의 설정과 구성원들의 조직에 대한 태도가 직접적이고 정(+)적인 관계에 있다는 논의에 그치고 있지만, 본 연구에서는 조직의 목표와 구성원들의 태도 간 관계에 있어 잠재적인 요인들이 영향을 줄 수 있다는 최근의 논의들을 실증적으로 규명하고자 팀 리더(team leader)의 지원(support)에 대한 구성원들의 인식을 매개변수로 포함하여 분석하였다. 분석결과, 목표지향성과 팀 리더의 지원은 조직구성원들의 직무만족에 모두 정(+)의 영향을, 이직의도에는 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 리더지원은 직무만족과 이직의도에 유의미한 매개효과가 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과는 조직 구성원들의 직무만족과 이직의도에 있어 팀 리더의 역할이 매우 중요하며 특히 조직의 목표와 구성원들의 역할, 구성원들의 업무수행에 필요한 지원에 대해 지속적인 의사소통이 필요하다는 점을 시사한다. This study examines how public employees’ perceptions about goal-directedness in the workplace impact their perceived leader support and attitudinal outcomes (i.e., job satisfaction and turnover intention). Specifically, this study focuses on public employees’ perceived leader support as a mediator in understanding the relationship between goal-directedness and employee outcomes. This study empirically found that goal-directedness plays an important role in enhancing public employees’ perceived leader support and in their behavioral outcomes. More importantly, findings show that public employees’ perceived leader support mediated the relationship between goal-directedness and their behavioral outcomes such as job satisfaction and turnover intention. The findings of this research provide new insights about underlying processes in understanding the relationship between goal-directedness and employees’ work attitudes and behavioral outcomes.

        A Case Study of Food Advertising Regulations

        증대하는 비만율과 설탕가공식품간의 상관관계가 어떻든 간에 아동을 대상으로 한 설탕이 들어간 가공식품 광고에 대한 정부개입을 위한 최적의 역할에 대해서는 논란이 있다. 식품규제지지자들은 규제행정기관으로부터 보다 엄격한 광고지침을 요구하는데 비해 반대자들은 식품광고에 대한 정부간섭은 가부장적인 것이며 광고들은 언론자유의 원칙에 따라 보호되어야만 한다고 반박한다. 본 연구 결과 규제행정기관들은 상당한 논란 속에서 식품광고 규제를 효과적으로 집행하고 있지 못하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이의 원인은 크게 세 가지로 설명할 수 있다. 첫째, 식품광고를 규제하는 관할영역 내에는 상충되는 이해관계가 존재하며 이는 규제행정기관들 사이에 협동적인 규제집행보다는 책임전가내지 책임회피를 유발했다. 둘째, 의회에 의한 권한위임과 행정기관에 의한 규제집행 사이에는 정책불연속이 존재한다. 셋째, 의회와 대통령의 이념과 같은 정책중개자로부터의 정치적 압력은 변화될 수 있으며, 이는 능동적으로 집행하려는 것을 꺼리게 만드는 분위기를 조성한다. 따라서, 적합한 규제설계 및 정부개입 범위와 관련하여 적절한 최소한의 변화가 필요하다고 생각한다. There is controversy regarding what the optimal roles for government intervention on food advertising should be of sugar-based processed foods to children and whether or not this correlates to an increased obesity rate. Food regulation proponents call for tighter advertising guidelines from regulatory agencies, whereas opponents retort that government intervention on food advertisement is paternalistic and their advertisements should be protected by the principles of free speech. This research finds that the regulatory agencies fail to effectively implement food advertising regulations amid considerable controversy: (i) there are overlapping or conflicting interests in their sphere of jurisdiction to regulate food advertising: it led to shirking among regulation agencies in terms of shifting the responsibility rather than cooperative regulation implementation (ii) there is policy discontinuity between delegation by Congress and regulation implementation by the agency, and (iii) political winds or pressures from the policy broker such as Congress and Presidents’ ideology may shift: which may cultivate a reluctance to implement actively. As a conclusion, this paper emphasizes the “libertarian paternalism,” or “nudge” for an appropriate regulation design and the scope of government intervention.

      • Effect of sucrose on the functional composition and antioxidant capacity of buckwheat (<i>Fagopyrum esculentum</i> M.) sprouts

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, the effects of sucrose on nutritional and functional composition as well as antioxidant activities in buckwheat sprouts during germination were investigated. Treatment with 1%, 2%, or 3% sucrose resulted in an increase in the amount of vitamins, four <I>C</I>-glycosylflavones, and rutin. Tocopherols and β-carotene in sprouts treated with 1%, 2%, and 3% sucrose were increased in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, the sum of individual flavonoid was 1.35, 1.29, and 1.60 times higher than that of control sprouts. Sucrose treatment increased tyrosine and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities resulting in an increase in the flavonoid content. Moreover, treatment of HepG2 cells with buckwheat sprouts ameliorated oxidative damages by modulating reactive oxygen species production, malondialdehyde generation, and antioxidant enzyme activities. These results suggest that sucrose treatment could improve the nutritional composition and antioxidant effects of germinating buckwheat sprouts.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Sucrose was used as an elicitor during buckwheat sprout germination. </LI> <LI> Sucrose treatment increased bioactive compounds of buckwheat sprout. </LI> <LI> Sucrose treatment increased tyrosine and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities. </LI> <LI> Buckwheat sprouts treated with sucrose modulated antioxidant enzyme activity in HepG2 cells. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Fast HEVC Intra Coding by Predicting the Rate-distortion Cost for a Low-complexity Encoder

        High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) intra coding achieves significant improvements in coding efficiency compared with H.264/AVC intra coding by adopting 35 spatial intra prediction modes and a quadtree-based block partitioning structure. However, the encoding complexity is extremely high from performing rate-distortion optimization (RDO) on each mode and depth level. This paper proposes fast intra mode decision algorithms for real-time HEVC encoding. For a fast intra prediction mode decision, we estimate the lower bound on the rate-distortion (RD) cost of a prediction unit with non–most-probable modes (non-MPMs). If the RD cost of the MPM is lower than the lower bound, the MPM is selected as the best mode. For a fast intra coding unit (CU) size decision, we predict the RD cost of four split sub-CUs from the RD of the current CU using the relationship between the RDs of the current CU and its split sub-CUs. In the HEVC Test Model software, the proposed algorithm saves 48.56% of the encoding time, on average, while the RD loss is only 0.59%. In x265, the proposed algorithm improves the encoding speed to 71.95 fps, on average, from 49.46 fps. It achieves 1.8 times faster speed with a bit increase of only 0.44%, compared to x265.

        Protective effect of the methanol extract of Polyopes lancifolia (Harvey) kawaguchi et wang against ionizing radiation-induced mouse gastrointestinal injury

        The radioprotective efficacy of a methanol extract of the red algae Polyopes lancifolia (Harvey) kawaguchi et wang (mPL) was evaluated in mice subjected to total-body gamma irradiation. mPL protection against radiation-induced oxidative stress was examined by histological evaluation of intestinal crypt-cell survival and liver activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). mPL (100 mg/kg body weight) administered intraperitoneally at 24 h and 1 h prior to irradiation protected jejunal crypt cells from radiation-induced apoptosis (p < 0.01). The pretreatment of mPL attenuated a radiation-induced decrease in villous height (p < 0.05), and improved jejunal crypt survival (p < 0.05). The dose reduction factor was 1.14 at 3.5 days after irradiation. Treatment with mPL prior to irradiation resulted in significantly higher (p < 0.01) levels of SOD and CAT activities, compared to those levels of irradiated control mice with vehicle treatment. These results suggest that mPL is a useful radioprotective agent capable of defending intestinal progenitor cells against total-body irradiation, at least in part through mPL antioxidative activity.

      • Two-Step Nickel Plating Technique for Fabrication of MEMS Electrostatic Microjet Injector

        In this paper, two-step nickel plating technique with high plating rate and good thickness uniformity is explored for the purpose of fabrication of MEMS electrostatic microjet injectors. The electrostatic microjet injector is composed of composed of micro nozzles and high pressure micropump with thick nickel membrane. The effect of nickel membrane parameters on pull-in voltage is investigated. Then two-step plating technique is suggested for the fast fabrication of thick nickel membrane. From the experimental results, good uniformity of 13% and high plating rate of 0.6 ㎛/min are obtained. These results are consistent with the literatures and acceptable for the fabrication of microjet injector.

        Social Construction of Euthanasia in Korea

        안락사는 한국에서 논쟁이 되고 있는 이슈인데, 최근 대법원은 소극적 안락사를 받아들이는 판결을 내렸으며, 이와 관련하여 몇몇 종교 단체들은 강한 반대를 표명했다. 안락사와 관련하여 여전히 법적으로 허용할 수 있는 범위 등에 관해 논쟁소지가 있다. 안락사처럼 가치관에 영향을 많이 받는 쟁점들에 대해서, 여론은 정책결정자들에게 중요한 영향요인으로 작용을 한다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라 진보언론, 보수언론의 안락사에 대한 보도내용을 검토하여 언론의 이념적 성향이 안락사와 관련된 이슈에 대해 각 언론의 논조에 영향을 미치는지를 논의하였다. 결론적으로, 안락사와 연관된 집단은 소수이고, 그들의 견해, 이해관계, 가치관 등이 사회적 담론과정에서 무시되기 쉽기 때문에, 사회적인 합의과정에서 그들에게 참여 기회를 제공하는 것이 우선적으로 가장 중요하다고 생각한다. The euthanasia is a controversial issue in Korea. The recent Supreme Court rulings accepted the “passive euthanasia.” Some religious groups strongly oppose to this decision. There are still debates on the scope of legally permissible euthanasia. In this kind of value-ridden issues, the public opinions are important factors for policy makers. However, the target group of euthanasia tends to be a minority and its opinions and interests and values are likely to be ignored in the social discussion. So giving them the chance of participation in the formation of social construction is important. This research tried to classify the target group of euthanasia by deciding whether euthanasia and its target group are viewed positively or negatively by mass media. This paper examines the coverage of euthanasia by liberal and conservative newspapers, and determined whether the ideological slant of these newspapers influence their attitudes on euthanasia issue. In the process of answering this question, this study gave some recommendations for the policy makers to enhance the participation of target groups in the formation social construction of this issue.

      • Effect of mesocelluar carbon foam electrode material on performance of vanadium redox flow battery

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Languid reaction rate of VO<SUP>2+</SUP>/VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> redox couple is a problem to solve for improving performance of vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). To facilitate the slow reaction materials including large pore sized mesocellular carbon foam (MSU-F-C and Pt/MSU-F-C) are used as new catalyst. Their catalytic activity and reaction reversibility are estimated and compared with other catalysts, while cycle tests of charge–discharge and polarization curve tests are implemented to evaluate energy efficiency (EE) and maximum power density (MPD). Their crystal structure, specific surface area and catalyst morphology are measured by XRD, BET and TEM. The new catalysts indicate high peak current ratio, small peak potential difference and high electron transfer rate constant, proving that their catalytic activity and reaction reversibility are superior. Regarding the charge–discharge and polarization curve tests, the VRFB single cells including new catalysts show high EE as well as low overpotential and internal resistance and high MPD. Such excellent results are due to mostly unique characteristics of MSU-F-C having large interconnected mesopores, high surface area and large contents of hydroxyl groups that serve as active sites for VO<SUP>2+</SUP>/VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> redox reaction and platinums (Pts) supporting the MSU-F-C. Indeed, employment of the catalysts including MSU-F-C leads to enhancement in performance of VRFB by facilitating the slow VO<SUP>2+</SUP>/VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> redox reaction.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We adopt large pore sized mesocellular carbon foam (MSU-F-C) as a new catalyst for enhancement in VRFB performance. </LI> <LI> The MSU-F-C plays a role in promoting a slow reaction rate of VO<SUP>2+</SUP>/VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> redox couple. </LI> <LI> Catalysts including MSU-F-C cause improvement in peak current ratio and electron transfer rate constant. </LI> <LI> VRFBs including MSU-F-C show high energy efficiency and maximum power density. </LI> <LI> Better VRFB perfomances are due to high surface area and large contents of hydroxyl groups of MSU-F-C. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
