• Tunable multi-cycle THz generation in organic crystal HMQ-TMS.

        Lu, Jian,Hwang, Harold Y,Li, Xian,Lee, Seung-Heon,Kwon, O-Pil,Nelson, Keith A Optical Society of America 2015 Optics express Vol.23 No.17

We report on the generation of continuously tunable multi-cycle THz pulses with center frequencies from 0.3 to 0.8 THz in the organic nonlinear crystal, HMQ-TMS [2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyryl)-1-methylquinolinium 2,-4,-6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate], by collinearly phase matched optical rectification of temporally shaped 800 nm pulses. The generation of harmonic frequency components inherent in the pulse shaper is selectively suppressed by varying the generation crystal thickness. THz pulses generated from HMQ-TMS show up to 20 times higher pulse energies compared to the benchmark inorganic THz generator ZnTe under identical conditions. The THz energy conversion efficiencies are measured to be on the order of 10-5.

      • Knocking Down Nucleolin Expression Enhances the Radiosensitivity of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer by Influencing DNA-PKcs Activity

        Xu, Jian-Yu,Lu, Shan,Xu, Xiang-Ying,Hu, Song-Liu,Li, Bin,Qi, Rui-Xue,Chen, Lin,Chang, Joe Y. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.8

Nucleolin (C23) is an important anti-apoptotic protein that is ubiquitously expressed in exponentially growing eukaryotic cells. In order to understand the impact of C23 in radiation therapy, we attempted to investigate the relationship of C23 expression with the radiosensitivity of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. We investigated the role of C23 in activating the catalytic subunit of DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PKcs), which is a critical protein for DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) repair. As a result, we found that the expression of C23 was negatively correlated with the radiosensitivity of NSCLC cell lines. In vitro clonogenic survival assays revealed that C23 knockdown increased the radiosensitivity of a human lung adenocarcinoma cell line, potentially through the promotion of radiation-induced apoptosis and adjusting the cell cycle to a more radiosensitive stage. Immunofluorescence data revealed an increasing quantity of ${gamma}$-H2AX foci and decreasing radiation-induced DNA damage repair following knockdown of C23. To further clarify the mechanism of C23 in DNA DSBs repair, we detected the expression of DNA-PKcs and C23 proteins in NSCLC cell lines. C23 might participate in DNA DSBs repair for the reason that the expression of DNA-PKcs decreased at 30, 60, 120 and 360 minutes after irradiation in C23 knockdown cells. Especially, the activity of DNA-PKcs phosphorylation sites at the S2056 and T2609 was significantly suppressed. Therefore we concluded that C23 knockdown can inhibit DNA-PKcs phosphorylation activity at the S2056 and T2609 sites, thus reducing the radiation damage repair and increasing the radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells. Taken together, the inhibition of C23 expression was shown to increase the radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells, as implied by the relevance to the notably decreased DNA-PKcs phosphorylation activity at the S2056 and T2609 clusters. Further research on targeted C23 treatment may promote effectiveness of radiotherapy and provide new targets for NSCLC patients.

      • Stable 2D anti-ferromagnetically coupled fluorenyl radical dendrons

        Wang, Jian,Kim, Gakhyun,Sandoval-Salinas, Marí,a Eugenia,Phan, Hoa,Gopalakrishna, Tullimilli Y.,Lu, Xuefeng,Casanova, David,Kim, Dongho,Wu, Jishan Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Chemical Science Vol.9 No.13

        <▼1>
The first class of stable two-dimensional anti-ferromagnetically coupled dendritic polyradicaloids was synthesized, which show polyradical character and unique properties.
</▼1><▼2>
We report the first class of stable, two-dimensional (2D) anti-ferromagnetically coupled dendritic polyradicaloids. A kinetically blocked fluorenyl radical was used to build up the first and second generation dendrons FR-G1 and FR-G2 containing three and seven fluorenyl units, respectively. The neighboring fluorenyl radicals in FR-G1 and FR-G2 show moderate anti-ferromagnetic exchange interaction, resulting in a doublet and quartet ground state, respectively, with a small doublet–quartet energy gap. From FR-G1 to FR-G2, the energy gap decreased and the two-photon absorption was enhanced owing to more extended 2D π-conjugation. Both compounds showed multiple redox waves due to their polyradical character.
</▼2>

Numerical approach to fracture behavior of CFRP/concrete bonded interfaces

        Hai X. Lin,Jian Y. Lu,Bing Xu 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.20 No.3

Tests on the fracture behavior of CFRP-concrete composite bonded interfaces have been extensively carried out. In this study, a progressive damage model is employed to simulate the fracture behaviors. The crack nucleation, propagation and more other details can be captured by these models. The numerical results indicate the fracture patterns seem to depend on the relative magnitudes of the interface cohesive strength and concrete tensile strength. The fracture pattern transits from the predominated adhesive-concrete interface debonding to the dominated concrete cohesive cracking as the interface cohesive strength changes from lower than concrete tensile strength to higher than that. The numerical results have an agreement with the experimental results.
