      • Projections of summertime ozone concentration over East Asia under multiple IPCC SRES emission scenarios

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have developed the Integrated Climate and Air Quality Modeling System (ICAMS) through the one-way nesting of global–regional models to examine the changes in the surface ozone concentrations over East Asia under future climate scenarios. Model simulations have been conducted for the present period of 1996–2005 to evaluate the performance of ICAMS. The simulated surface ozone concentrations reproduced the observed monthly mean concentrations at sites in East Asia with high R<SUP>2</SUP> values (0.4–0.9), indicating a successful simulation to capture both spatial and temporal variability. We then performed several model simulations with the six IPCC SRES scenarios (A2, A1B, A1FI, A1T, B1, and B2) for the next three periods, 2016–2025 (the 2020s), 2046–2055 (the 2050s), and 2091–2100 (the 2090s). The model results show that the projected changes of the annual daily mean maximum eight-hour (DM8H) surface ozone concentrations in summertime for East Asia are in the range of 2–8 ppb, −3 to 8 ppb, and −7 to 9 ppb for the 2020s, the 2050s, and the 2090s, respectively, and are primarily determined based on the emission changes of NO<SUB>x</SUB> and NMVOC. The maximum increases in the annual DM8H surface ozone and high-ozone events occur in the 2020s for all scenarios except for A2, implying that the air quality over East Asia is likely to get worse in the near future period (the 2020s) than in the far future periods (the 2050s and the 2090s). The changes in the future environment based on IPCC SRES scenarios would also influence the change in the occurrences of high-concentrations events more greatly than that of the annual DM8H surface ozone concentrations. Sensitivity simulations show that the emissions increase is the key factor in determining future regional surface ozone concentrations in the case of a developing country, China, whereas a developed country, Japan would be influenced more greatly by effects of the regional climate change than the increase in emissions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Change in ozone level is determined by the combination of NO<SUB>x</SUB> and NMVOC emissions. </LI> <LI> Ozone level over East Asia would get worse in the near future (the 2020s) than far future. </LI> <LI> A high-concentration event generally increases and more frequently occurs in the future. </LI> <LI> Change in ozone air quality in a developing country depends more on emissions change. </LI> <LI> Change in ozone air quality in a developed country depends more on climate change. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Diagnostic Significance of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials in Microvascular Decompression of Patients with Hemifacial Spasm or Trigeminal Neuralgia

        The purpose of this study was to analyse brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) wave change data during microvascular decompression (MVD). The nerve function of Cranial Nerve VIII is at risk during MVD. Intraoperative monitoring of BAEP can be a useful tool to decrease the danger of hearing loss. Between January and December 2009, 242 patients had MVD for hemifacial spasm (HFS) and trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Among intraoperative BAEP changes, amplitude of V-V’ was the most frequently observed during cerebellar retraction and decompression step of the MVD procedure. 138 patients (57%) had no BAEP change while 104 patients (42.98%) had BAEP change. 69 patients (28.5%) had Type A-I, 16 patients (6.6%) had Type A-II, 5 patients (2.1%) had Type B, and 13 patients (5.37%) had Type C. MVD is a surgical procedure to relieve the symptoms (e.g. pain, muscle twitching) caused by compression of a nerve by an artery or vein. During BAEP intraoperative monitoring, the surgical step is important in interpreting the changes of wave V. Several potential mechanisms of injury may affect the cochlear nerve, and complete loss of BAEP is often associated with postoperative hearing loss. Intraoperative BAEP monitoring may provide an early warning of hearing disturbance after MVD.

        Background: Treatment of alopecia areata (AA) is often empiric and not yet satisfactory. Recently, Janus kinase inhibitor showed promising results in Caucasians. Objectives: To investigate efficacy, tolerability, and hair growth trajey of oral tofacitinib monotherapy for Korean AA patients over extended period. Methods: This is a retrospective study of adult AA patients treated with tofacitinib monotherapy for least 4 months. Results: Thirty-six Korean patients with median initial SALT score of 98.9 were included; 91.7% had refractory AA. Twenty-nine (80.6%) patients demonstrated more than 5% SALT change. Twenty patients (55.6%) achieved 50% SALT change at median 7.5 months with 5 mg twice dosage. There were significant differences between SALT 50 achievers and non-achievers: duration of current episode (ρ = 0.009), duration of disease since first onset (ρ = 0.026) and age at onset of first episode (ρ = 0.011). Tofacitinib was well tolerated and there was no any serious adverse effect such as malignancy or tuberculosis reactivation. Conclusion: Oral tofacitinib monotherapy may be effective and tolerable in patients with AA. SALT 50 achievement was associated with followings: duration of current episode, duration of disease since first onset, and age at onset of first episode.

        Aptamer‑linked immobilized sorbent assay for detecting GMO marker, phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT)

        Background Development of genetically modified crops has rapidly increased in last few years. The most widely grown GM crops express genes that confer herbicide tolerance and insect resistance. Detection system of GM crops is important for safety evaluation before its consumption. Objective The purpose of this research is to detect GM crops, especially PAT, in food-samples. Results The bar gene (PAT protein, herbicide resistant) was cloned in pGEX-4T-1 and expressed by E. coli. The high-affinity PAT-specific single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) aptamers were obtained from a random DNA library. MOE docking study was performed to identify the potential binding region of the selected aptamers on PAT. Aptamer-linked immobilized sorbent assay (ALISA) method was used to detect PAT. Conclusion We screened aptamer against PAT for developing an efficient detection method. The selected PAT specific aptamers, HRPA-05 and HRPA-07, showed the distinct target binding behaviors, and detected PAT protein by aptamer-linked immobilized sorbent assay method with high efficiency and selectivity.

        Characterization of changes in global gene expression in the brain of neuron-specific enolase/human Tau23 transgenic mice in response to overexpression of Tau protein.

        <P>Tau is a neuronal phosphoprotein responsible for the formation of the neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease. To characterize the changes in global gene expression in the brain of transgenic mice that overexpress human Tau23 protein in response to the increase of Tau23 phosphorylation, total RNA extracted from the hippocampus of 12-month-old transgenic and wild-type mice was converted to cDNA, labeled with biotin and hybridized to oligonucleotide microarrays. The microarray results were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting method. It was determined that 43 genes were up-regulated and 8 genes were down-regulated by Tau23 in transgenic mice compared to controls, based on the arbitrary difference in the 2-fold change. Among the up-regulated transcripts, those encoding for transporter and oxidoreductase were dramatically over-represented, followed by those related to regulatory molecule, cytoskeletal protein, signaling molecule, and extracellular matrix protein. Genes encoding for transcription factor, regulatory molecule, miscellaneous function, and chaperone were significantly reduced in the down-regulated group. The major genes in the up-regulated categories included Ecrg4, Folr1, Defb11, Aqp1 and Soctdc1. The major genes in the down-regulated categories were Ncor1, Gpm6a, and Hspd1. These results indicate that the microarray analysis identifies several gene functional groups and individual genes that respond to a sustained increase in Tau23 phosphorylation levels in the brain of transgenic mice. In addition, the results suggest the microarray test is a useful tool for increased understanding of the role of Tau23 protein in regulating neurodegenerative disorders.</P>

        자동차 칵핏 모듈용 플라스틱 소재의 열화 동특성 평가

        플라스틱 소재는 온도, 습도 및 자외선 등 다양한 환경의 영향으로 인해 기계적 물성변화가 심하기 때문에 체결부의 견고함이 느슨해지고 형태의 변형에 의해 부품간의 마찰 등을 유발하여 잡음이 발생하게 된다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 자동차 칵핏 모듈에 사용되는 다양한 플라스틱 소재에 대해 온도변화에 따른 동 특성시험을 통해 유리전이온도, 저장탄성계수, 손실계수 등을 측정하여 상온 및 열화조건에 따른 물성변화를 파악하였다. 시험결과, 온도가 높을수록 저장탄성계수는 감소하고 손실계수는 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. Engineering plastics are used in instrument panels, interior trim, and other vehicle applications, and the thermomechanical behaviors of plastic materials are strongly influenced by many environmental factors such as temperature, sunlight, and rain. As the material properties change, the mechanical parts create unexpected noise. In this study, the dynamic mechanical property changes of plastics used in automobiles are measured to investigate the temperature effects. Viscoelastic properties such as the glass transition temperature and storage modulus and loss factor under temperature and frequency sweeps were measured. The data were compared with the original ones before aging to analyze the behavior changes. It was found that as the temperature increased, the storage modulus decreased and the loss factor increased slightly.

        종창성 홍반 루푸스 18예의 임상, 병리조직학적 고찰

        Background: Lupus erythematosus tumidus (LET) is a rare subset of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and LET is clinically characterized by erythematous, succulent, urticarial plaques on the sun-exposed areas and LET is histopathologically characterized by the presence of perivascular and periadnexal lymphocytic infiltrates with interstitial mucin deposition. Objective: We investigated the clinical and histopathological features of LET in Korean patients. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 18 patients who were diagnosed with LET between 1993 and 2010. The clinical characteristics, histopathological and laboratory findings, association with other subsets of lupus and the course of disease were analyzed. Results: LET occurred predominantly in females, with the gender ratio being 1:8. The mean age at diagnosis was 31.3 years. Two of 18 patients (11.1%) were previously diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or they had discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) simultaneously. The most common clinical features were erythematous patches, nodules or plaques and the most common site was the face. Eight of eighteen patients (44.4%) had photosensitivity and this value was lower than that of the previous reports. The antinuclear antibody (ANA) was negative or weakly positive in 13/15 (86.7%) cases. The main histopathological characteristics were perivascular and/or periadnexal lymphocytic infiltrates, and interstitial mucin deposition. Epidermal changes were absent or there were minimal changes. The treatments included antimalarial drugs, dapsone and topical and systemic corticosteroid. The patients showed a good response to the treatments without scarring. Conclusion: A clinicopathological review of 18 LET cases revealed results that were similar to those of the previous reports, although there were some differences in the gender ratio and frequency of photosensitivity. Further studies are needed to elucidate the cause of such differences. (Korean J Dermatol 2010;48(5):402~408)

      • CO2 농도 및 기온 상승이 현사시나무의 수분생리 특성에 미치는 영향

        기후변화에 적응력이 높은 조림수종을 탐색하기 위하여 CO2 농도 및 기온 상승이 현사시나무의 수분생리에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 현사시나무는 CO2 농도 및 기온이 상승된 조건에서 엽량 및 엽면적이 감소하였고, 섬모의 엽면 피복도가 현격하게 증가하였다. 또한, 기공전도도 및 증산속도는 낮은 값을 유지하였으며, 광도 및 CO2 농도 상승에 따른 변화가 거의 나타나지 않았다. 이로써 처리구의 수분이용효율 및 상태함수율은 대조구에 비해 높은 값을 가질 수 있었다. 이러한 결과로부터 CO2 농도 및 기온 상승된 조건에서 현사시나무는 엽면경계층과 기공저항의 증가로 수분손실을 억제하는 능력이 뛰어남을 알 수 있었다. 현사시나무는 수분스트레스에 대한 높은 가소성과 조직의 형태를 변화시키는 기작으로 기후변화 환경에 적응하고 있는 것으로 사료된다. This study was conducted to investigate the water physiology characters of Populus alba× glandulosa cuttings in response to elevated CO2 concentration and air temperature for selecting tree species adaptive to climate change. The poplars under the elevated treatment showed a decrease in the leaf number and area, compared with those under the ambient condition. Having denser leaf hairs, the poplars under the treatment maintained lower stomatal conductance and slower transpiration rate. These results indicate that increased leaf boundary layer and stomatal resistance of poplars under elevated treatment allowed higher water use efficiency and water retentivity. The phenotypic plasticity of leaves in response to water stress would probably enable the poplars to cope with possible climate change conditions.
