Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production.The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

        한국피아노교수법학회논문집 : 라벨, 드뷔시의 피아노 음악에서 나타나는 물의 영상

        본 연구에서는 라벨과 드뷔시의 미적, 사상적 배경이 ‘물’이라는 동일한 음악외적인 소재를 피아노 음악 과 연관시키는 과정에서 어떤 차이를 유발하였는지를 연구하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 라벨과 드뷔시의 미적 견해, 사상적 배경, 그리고 음악외적 소재 (혹은 언어적 힌트)와 음악과의 관계에 대한 견해를 문헌적인 연 구를 통하여 알아보았다. 각 작곡가의 물과 관련된 작품들 중 라벨의 물의 희롱과 밤의 가스파르 중 온딘, 그리고 드뷔시의 물의 반영을 형식, 물을 표현하기 위한 피아니스틱한 기제들, 그로 인한 음색에 초점을 맞 추어 분석해 보았다. 라벨은 각 작품의 주제를 매우 효과적으로 묘사하고 있으나 작곡가 본인의 감정 이입 은 발견하기 어려웠으며, 드뷔시의 경우 인상주의보다는 상징주의에 부합하는 기제들을 사용함으로써 단순 한 묘사보다는 내면적인 어떤 것을 표현하려 하였음을 알 수 있다. This study focuses on Ravel, Debussy’s aesthetic attitudes or philosophical tendencies and their effect on the individuality of their own water pieces. The research relies on literature study for the composers’ aesthetic attitudes and philosophical tendencies. It also analyses Ravel’s Jeux d’eau, Ondine in Gaspard de la Nuit, and Debussy’s Reflets dans l’eau focusing on the their form, pianistic devices for expressing water, and the sound resulted. It finds that Ravel effectively depicts water, the subject of his pieces rather than expresses his emotion. On the other hand, Debussy tried to express something behind consciousness by using devices for Symbolism rather than Impressionism.

        A review on sensors and systems in structural health monitoring: current issues and challenges

        Sensors and systems in Civionics technology play an important role for continuously facilitating real-time structure monitoring systems by detecting and locating damage to or degradation of structures. An advanced materials, design processes, long-term sensing ability of sensors, electromagnetic interference, sensor placement techniques, data acquisition and computation, temperature, harsh environments, and energy consumption are important issues related to sensors for structural health monitoring (SHM). This paper provides a comprehensive survey of various sensor technologies, sensor classes and sensor networks in Civionics research for existing SHM systems. The detailed classification of sensor categories, applications, networking features, ranges, sizes and energy consumptions are investigated, summarized, and tabulated along with corresponding key references. The current challenges facing typical sensors in Civionics research are illustrated with a brief discussion on the progress of SHM in future applications. The purpose of this review is to discuss all the types of sensors and systems used in SHM research to provide a sufficient background on the challenges and problems in optimizing design techniques and understanding infrastructure performance, behavior and current condition. It is observed that the most important factors determining the quality of sensors and systems and their reliability are the long-term sensing ability, data rate, types of processors, size, power consumption, operation frequency, etc. This review will hopefully lead to increased efforts toward the development of low-powered, highly efficient, high data rate, reliable sensors and systems for SHM.

        The prevalence of prostate cancer is stiffly increasing in Korea. In contrasts to the frequency of occurrence, there is no definite guideline for the cut off value of serum PSA. So, we reviewed the usefulness of serum PSA and recently reported guidelines in the prostate cancer detection. Nowadays, the cut off value of PSA continued to change, moreover, it is difficult to satisfied both sensitivity and specificity, at the same time. Also, the value of PSA relies on the assay method or laboratory. Various methods such as the percent of free PSA, PSA velocity and PSA doubling time have been used to enhance the detection rate during prostate biopsy. However, these methods did not make certainty in deciding whether performing the prostate biopsy. To complement the uncertainty of PSA and its derivatives, the new ways such as proPSA, PCA3 and gene fusion have been recently documented. Currently, the clearly indication of prostate biopsy is placed in controversy. Therefore, in the future, new methods to overcome non-specificity of PSA should be considered.

        식이성 인지질이 흰쥐의 혈청 및 장기조직의 지질성분에 미치는 영향

        For the study of the effect of dietary phospholipid(PL) on the lipid components of serum and organ tissues in Sprague-Dawley rats, 56 Male-rats were divided into 8 groups, which was composed of 7. One group was fed with basal diet(normal group). And other experimental groups were fed ad libitum with the mixture of carbohydrate : casein: salt mixture : vitamin mixture(60 : 18 : 4 : 1) and at the same time fed administratively with 1 gram of phospholipid -free soybean oil, corn oil and sesame oil, and phospholipid-containing soybean oil, corn oil and sesame oil respectively. After 60 days the rats were fasted for 12 hours and then decapitated to collect blood and separate organ tissues. The lipid and protein components of serum and organ tissues were analized. The results of this study are summarized as follows. The supplementation of dietary phospholipid decreases the food efficiency ratio and the growth rate of experimental rats ; it increases the level of serum phospholipid and cholesterol ester, but decreases the value of total-cholesterol (T-chol.)/PL ; it decreases the value of albumin/globulin (A/G ratio)of serum protein and it increases the level of phosphatidyl ethanolamine(PE) in serum and organ tissues. And the correlation coefficients among the contents of T-chol., of HDL-chol. and of phospholipid in serum and liver are negative in general. Therefore I think that we must eat dietary phospholipid unpurified from vegetable oil to prevent development of atherosclerosis and fat liver.

      • 양파가 흰쥐의 혈청 성분에 미치는 영향

        For the study of the effect of dietary onion on the serum lipid, protein and glucose of Sprague-Dawley rate, 48 male rate had been raised for 8 weeks. They were fed basal diet with 2.5% corn oil-soluble cholesterol in addition to raw onion juice, concentrated onion juice and onion ethanol extract respectively. At last day of experimental periods, the rats were fasted for 12 hours and then decapitated to collect blood. Lipid, protein and glouse of serum, food efficiency ratio(FER) and weight gain were measured. This results are summarized as follows. 1. The dietary onion increases the weight gain and FER of rat. 2. The dietary onion increases HDL-cholesterol level of serum in rat. 3. The dietary onion decreases the albumin/globulin ratio and glucose level and T-chol/PL ratio of serum in rat. Therefore I think that onion is available for diabetes and atherosclerosis.

        Economic Burden of the Inadequate Management of Allergic Rhinitis and Urticaria in Asian Countries Based on the GA2LEN Model

        Purpose: Across Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, (referred to as Asia) approximately 30-53 million individuals of the 151 million employed suffer from allergic rhinitis (AR) and urticaria. It is estimated that approximately 90% of patients with these allergic conditions are insufficiently treated, impacting the socioeconomic burden in terms of absence from work and decreased productivity. This study aims to estimate the socioeconomic burden of allergies in Asia and the cost savings that their adequate management can provide. Due to the limited availability of regional data, this study focused AR and urticaria in selected countries. Methods: Published literature, information from statistical bureaus, clinician surveys and extrapolation of selected data from the European Union were used to determine the socioeconomic costs of AR and urticaria. Results: Many patients in Asia suffer from perennial allergies and experience symptoms of AR and urticaria for up to 298 days per year. An estimate of the indirect costs of patients insufficiently treated for AR and urticaria amounts to USD 105.4 billion a year, which equates to USD 1,137-2,195 per patient due to absenteeism and presenteeism. Adherence to guideline-approved treatment can lead to estimated savings of up to USD 104 billion. Conclusions: The current study suggests that within Asia, the socioeconomic impact of AR and urticaria is similar to that seen in the European Union in spite of the lower wages in Asia. This is due to the mainly perennial allergens prevailing in Asia, whereas the sensitization patterns observed in the European Union are dominated by seasonal exposure to pollen. These results underline the need for governmental initiatives to increase public awareness on the prevention and treatment of these and other allergic diseases as well as greater research funding and large-scale studies to reduce their growing socioeconomic burden in coming years.
