Jeremy Quiachon Abacan

ABSTRACT The Graduate School of Health Science and Social Welfare Department of Public Health Education Sahmyook University Jeremy Quiachon Abacan This study assesses health-promoting lifestyles and depression among nursing students and to examine relationship between the student’s characteristics, depression and health-promoting lifestyle in Korea. A cross-sectional descriptive and correlational design was conducted using a sample of 252 nursing students at Sahmyook University and Sahmyook Health University in South Korea. Lifestyles and Depression were assessed using the revised Korean Version of the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II) and the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that the total average score for students was 2.3(SD=0.4). Highest mean score was for interpersonal relationship subscale (M=2.3, SD=0.4), and the lowest mean score was for health responsibility (M=1.9, SD=0.5). There were significant negative correlations between spiritual growth (r=-0.193, p=0.002), interpersonal relationship (r=-0.167, p=0.008), stress management (r=-0.257, p=0.000), total HPLP-II score (r=-0.176, p=0.005) and depression among the nursing students in Korea. This study suggests that the department of nursing must develop programs and continually integrate health promotion courses in the curriculum to help the students understand the importance of healthy lifestyle behavior. Depression was common to low and medium levels of health-promoting lifestyle. High scores in lifestyle behaviors such as interpersonal relationship, spiritual growth, and stress management were less likely to develop depression. Healthy lifestyle should be further promoted in the Korean nursing students and measures should be taken for improving their depression. Importance of the Study Healthy lifestyle and health-promoting activities had proven to play a major role in preserving the well-being of an individual (Haddad, Kane, Rajacich, Cameron, and Al‐Ma'aitah 2004). Previous studies have shown that unhealthy lifestyle choices pose a great risk to develop non-communicable diseases which is on the top of the list of global burden of diseases (Fleetwood & Packa, 1991; Li, 2008, Lim, 2013). Health promotion is an important determinant of one’s individual health status which enables that person to realize his responsibility for his own well-being (Shaheen, Nassar, Amre & Hamdan-Mansour, 2015). Pender’s health promotion model shows that physical activity, nutrition, stress management, health responsibility, interpersonal support and self-actualization are dimensions that comprises health-promoting lifestyles (Pender, Murdaugh & Parsons, 2002) Nurses have a great influence in supporting health promotion and prevention efforts (DeCola, Benton, Peterson & Matebeni, 2012). Clinical nursing practices and health-promoting lifestyle of nurses will play a crucial role in promoting healthy lifestyle. A healthy nurse should focus on creating and maintaining a balanced synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual well-being at both personal and professional levels. American Nurses Association (ANA) stated that Nurses life should live to the outmost potential in the wellness or illness continuum, as a strong role model, advocating and educating for their families, communities and work environments, and most especially for their patients. Jane Wills, Professor of Health Promotion at London Southbank University, stated that the health lifestyle of nurses affects the delivery of practice. Nurses’ unhealthy lifestyles adversely affect their ability to provide quality care. Health care providers should keep their full responsibility on having healthy lifestyles, since it is their responsibility to p
