        Effects of Tinnitus Sound Therapy Depending on Stimulating Sound

        Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effects of sound therapy according to various types of stimuli for 3 months in people with chronic tinnitus. Methods: Fifty-eight participants with chronic tinnitus based on inclusive and exclusive criteria were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: broadband noise group, nature sound group, and music sound group. Each group received sound therapy for 3 months and the level of stimulus was set to the level of the mixing point. To measure the change in participants’ tinnitus, the Korean version of the Tinnitus Primary Function Questionnaire (K-TPFQ) was used at the initial and 3-month follow-up sessions. Results: In the mixed model analysis of variance, the main effects of time were significant in almost all the K-TPFQ categories, except for the hearing category. However, the main effect of groups was not significant in most of the K-TPFQ categories, except for the sleep category. The main effects of interaction with group × time were not significant. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that sound therapy for 3 months could be effective in the management of tinnitus. However, no difference in the effect of sound therapy according to the type of stimuli was noted. These results show that sound therapy could be an effective method for people with tinnitus, regardless of the type of stimulus.

      • A System-on-Chip Solution for Point-of-Care Ultrasound Imaging Systems: Architecture and ASIC Implementation

        <P>In this paper, we present a novel system-on-chip (SOC) solution for a portable ultrasound imaging system (PUS) for point-of-care applications. The PUS-SOC includes all of the signal processing modules (i.e., the transmit and dynamic receive beamformer modules, mid- and back-end processors, and color Doppler processors) as well as an efficient architecture for hardware-based imaging methods (e.g., dynamic delay calculation, multi-beamforming, and coded excitation and compression). The PUS-SOC was fabricated using a UMC 130-nm NAND process and has 16.8 GFLOPS of computing power with a total equivalent gate count of 12.1 million, which is comparable to a Pentium-4 CPU. The size and power consumption of the PUS-SOC are 27 x 27 mm(2) and 1.2 W, respectively. Based on the PUS-SOC, a prototype hand-held US imaging system was implemented. Phantom experiments demonstrated that the PUS-SOC can provide appropriate image quality for point-of-care applications with a compact PDA size (200 x 120 x 45 mm(3)) and 3 hours of battery life.</P>

        지역아동센터 만족도가 지역아동센터 이용 아동의 주관적 안녕감에 미치는 영향: 긍정적 자아관, 일상적 스트레스의 매개적 역할을 중심으로

        본 연구의 목적은 지역아동센터를 이용하는 초등학교 6학년 아동의 지역아동센터 만족도가 주관적 안녕감에 미치는 직접적인 영향과 긍정적 자아관 및 일상적 스트레스를 통해 주관적 안녕감에 미치는 간접적 영향을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 지역아동센터 아동패널 2기 중 제3차(2016년)에 조사된 자료를 활용하여 지역아동센터를 이용하고 있는 초등학교 6학년 아동 662명(남아: 325명, 여아: 337명)을 대상으로 측정한 지역아동센터 만족도와 긍정적 자아관, 일상적 스트레스, 주관적 안녕감의 자료를 사용하였다. 자료는 AMOS 22.0 프로그램을 이용하여 구조방정식 모형(Structural Equation Modeling: SEM)을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 지역아동센터 만족도는 주관적 안녕감에 직접적인 영향을 미쳐 지역아동센터에 만족도가 높을수록 주관적 안녕감을 높게 지각하였다. 또한, 지역아동센터 만족도는 긍정적 자아관 및 일상적 스트레스를 통해 간접적으로도 영향을 미쳤다. 즉, 지역아동센터 만족도가 높을수록 자아를 긍정적으로 인식하게 되고, 스트레스 수준은 낮았으며 주관적 안녕감이 높아졌다. 본 연구는 지역아동센터를 이용하는 아동의 주관적 안녕감에 영향을 미치는 요인으로서 지역아동센터 만족도와 긍정적 자아관, 일상적 스트레스를 동시에 고려했다는 점에서 의의가 있으며, 본 연구결과는 지역아동센터를 이용하는 아동의 주관적 안녕감을 향상시킬 수 있는 프로그램 개발의 기초자료로 활용될 것으로 기대된다. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of community child center satisfaction on children’s subjective well-being and the mediating effects of positive self and daily hassles. To achieve this, a total of 662 6<SUP>th</SUP> grade elementary school children (325 boys and 337 girls), using survey on Community Child Center Panel, were utilized and all variables were assessed by means of self reporting by the children involved. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), making use of AMOS 22.0. As a result, the level of child satisfaction with community child centers affected their subjective well-being directly; meaning higher levels of satisfaction with community child centers led to higher subjective well-being. Additionally, the level of child satisfaction with community child centers affected their subjective well-being indirectly through their positive self and daily hassles. In other words, the higher the satisfaction level with community child centers, the more positive self images were observed, and the lower the stress levels, which in turn led to higher overall levels of happiness and satisfaction in their lives. These findings have implications for research and practice by emphasizing the crucial influences of community child center satisfaction and positive self image, and daily hassles on children’s subjective well-being. Moreover, the results of this study are expected to be used as a basic data for developing programs that can improve children’s subjective well-being in community child centers.

      • Enhancement of photoacoustic image quality by sound speed correction: ex vivo evaluation.

        <P>Real-time photoacoustic (PA) imaging involves beamforming methods using an assumed fixed sound speed, typically 1540 m/s in soft tissue. This leads to degradation of PA image quality because the true sound speed changes as PA signal propagates through different types of soft tissues: the range from 1450 m/s to 1600 m/s. This paper proposes a new method for estimating an optimal sound speed to enhance the cross-sectional PA image quality. The optimal sound speed is determined when coherent factor with the sound speed is maximized. The proposed method was validated through simulation and ex vivo experiments with microcalcification-contained breast cancer specimen. The experimental results demonstrated that the best lateral resolution of PA images of microcalcifications can be achieved when the optimal sound speed is utilized.</P>

        Purpose, Procedure, and Contents of Counseling according to Tinnitus Interventions

        Tinnitus refers to the perception of ringing sounds in the ear that are not heard by others. Counseling plays a vital role in tinnitus intervention. Counseling provides correct information about tinnitus and hearing loss, corrects any misunderstandings related to tinnitus, and suggests precise alternative interventions for tinnitus. In this review, we aimed to examine the counseling contents in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Tinnitus Activities Treatment (TAT) to identify information that could be useful for counseling approaches and contents for the various tinnitus intervention methods. We searched Web of Science, Embase, Science Direct, and PubMed for relevant articles. Of the 5,283 articles, 31 were included in the final review of counseling contents for TRT, CBT, and TAT. Based on our findings, we were able to summarize the main contents of counseling in TRT, CBT, and TAT. Although the contents of counseling may vary depending on the individuals with tinnitus, our review provided information that may help audiologists or hearing professionals further understand the fundamentals of counseling for each tinnitus intervention. Our review may serve as a guideline for tinnitus counseling according to tinnitus interventions.

      • A single FPGA-based portable ultrasound imaging system for point-of-care applications

        <P>We present a cost-effective portable ultrasound system based on a single field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for point-of-care applications. In the portable ultrasound system developed, all the ultrasound signal and image processing modules, including an effective 32-channel receive beamformer with pseudo-dynamic focusing, are embedded in an FPGA chip. For overall system control, a mobile processor running Linux at 667 MHz is used. The scan-converted ultrasound image data from the FPGA are directly transferred to the system controller via external direct memory access without a video processing unit. The potable ultrasound system developed can provide real-time B-mode imaging with a maximum frame rate of 30, and it has a battery life of approximately 1.5 h. These results indicate that the single FPGA-based portable ultrasound system developed is able to meet the processing requirements in medical ultrasound imaging while providing improved flexibility for adapting to emerging POC applications.</P>
