A novel series of 5-benzofuranyl-substituted cyclohexane-1,3-dione oxime derivatives were synthesized to optimize the herbicidal activity, and found to possess good selectivity between grass crops (벼, 밀, 수수 등) and grass weeds (피, 바랭이, 미국개기장 등) at low rate. The structure-activity relationships analyses were carried out to understand the drug-receptor interaction. The weed control and crop selectivity of a specific example, EK-2612, are presented in detail (physical properties, herbicidal activity, vertical migration, acetylcoenzyme carboxylase inhibitory activity).

We developed an efficient three-step synthetic protocol of $\gamma$-hydroxybutenolides starting from the Baylis-Hillman adducts: (i) bromination, (ii) Barbier reaction and (iii) one-pot $K_2CO_3$-mediated synthesis of $\gamma$-hydroxybutenolides. In addition, we showed the synthetic applicability of butenolides including self-dimerization, conjugate addition reaction, and alkylations.
