U.S. Sub-prime Crisis and the Global Economy

2007년에 발생한 “서브프라임 모기지 사태”는 신용상태가 좋지 못한 대출자들이 주택담보대출의 원리금을 제대로 갚지 못함으로써 비우량주택담보대출채권에 투자한 기업들이 대출금 회수불능상태에 빠지고 신용 시장에 큰 변동성을 가져왔다. 미국 정부는 구제금융을 통한 개입을 하지 않을 것이라고 공언하였고 이 때문에 유동성위기에 처한 미국의 대형 금융사, 증권회사의 파산이 이어졌다. 이것은 세계적인 신용경색을 가져왔고 실물경제에 악영향을 주어 세계 경제시장에 타격을 준 사건이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 이해하고 해결방안을 모색하기 위해, 글로벌 신용 위기 사태에 둘러싸인 미국 주택담보대출인 서브프라임모기지론 산업과 관련된 주요 요인들을 시스템 다이나스믹스 방법으로 접근하여 분석해보았다. 본 연구의 장점은 시스템에 대한 이해를 통해, 유동성의 문제와 가계소비 및 투자 위축과 관련된 특정 외부 요인들을 분리시켜 문제점을 제시하고, 해결책을 제시하는 데 있다. 본 연구에서 적용된 시스템 다이나믹스 방법론은 다른 분야 또는 다른 비즈니스 문제에도 적용이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. The Global Economy crisis termed the "Subprime Mortgage Crisis" is affected by the ongoing contraction in the credit markets where companies are unable to receive loans from financial institutions and homeowners are unable to repay their mortgages. Government bailouts are rampant and large corporations are nationalized in order to save consumer confidence to prevent a long and dire recession in the world and curb a repeat of The Great Depression of the 1930s. To understand and put a halt to this systemic problem affecting the globe, it is important to understand the system dynamics surrounding the reason for the credit crisis which begun from the U.S. housing subprime mortgage industry and exacerbated to the financial institutions to the rest of the world. Through understanding the system, it is then possible to isolate certain external factors that can be introduced to put a band aid on the bleeding liquidity and encourage consumer spending and investment.
