To develop an effective system for analyzing the mechanical property of cells, a silicon specimen that carries skeletal muscle cells is fabricated by MEMS process. Fabrication of micro-scale specimen includes backside photoresist patterning, reactive ion etching (RIE), and potassium hydroxide (KOH) etching. As-fabricated specimens provide opportunities for cell growth in a freestanding form. Afterward, by culturing skeletal muscle cells on the specimen, the biocompatibility of the specimen is verified. Ongoing measurements of the mechanical property of skeletal muscle cells using the developed testing system will also be presented.
