        In Vitro Antiviral Activity of Ribavirin Against Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus Myung Jin LEE1, Kye-Hyung KIM1, Jongyoun YI2, SuJin CHOI1, Chung-Jong KIM1, Nak- Hyun KIM1, Kyoung-Ho SONG1, Pyoeng Gyun CHOI1, Ji-Hwan BANG1, Wan Beom PARK1, Eu Suk KIM1, Sang-Won PARK1, Hong Bin KIM1, Nam Joong KIM1, Myoung- Don OH1 Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea1, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Korea2 Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel Bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). No effective antiviral therapy is proven yet, but clinical use of ribavirin (RBV) has been tried. We investigated the antiviral effect of RBV against SFTSV in vitro. Methods: To test for cytotoxicity of RBV, Vero cells were treated with different concentrations of RBV (3.90 to 500 μg/mL, two-fold dilution) and analyzed by cell viability MTS assay 48h post-infection. To determine antiviral activity of RBV against SFTSV, Vero cells were infected with SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 at 100 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) per well in a 96-well plate, and RBV was added at the concentrations showing no or minimal cytotoxicity. Viral RNAs were extracted from the culture supernatants and quantifi ed using one-step real-time reverse transcription- PCR to amplify the partial large segment of SFTSV. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA with Tukey`s post hoc test. Results: Cytotoxicity due to RBV was not observed at RBV concentration =31.3 μg/ mL. Viral RNAs at 24h post-RBV treatment were reduced with increasing RBV concentrations (1-32 μg/mL), compared with those of mock-treated cells (P <0.01, Figure). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RBV was 3.69 μg/mL at 24h post-RBV treatment. Conclusions: Our study shows that RBV has antiviral effect against SFTSV in a dose-dependent manner. Further studies are required to evaluate the effi cacy of RBV in SFTS.

        Nanoparticulate silica sols could be synthesized by an interfacial hydrolysis reaction between TEOS and high alkaline water. The silica sols were extremely stable at pH of 8 and their average particle sizes were less than 3 nm, while very unstable between 4 and 5 of pH. The sol particles grew up to about 10 nm within 1 day in the region of pH less than 7. It was found that the silica sol with pH less than 2 was stabilized without further growing after 1 day-aging. The particle size of γ-AlOOH sols synthesized via the modified Yoldas-method could be controlled according to the mole ratio of nitric acid/aluminium tri-sec-butoxide(0.07∼1.0). The stable γ-AlOOH sol with the average particle size of 45 nm, which was prepared using the mole ratio of 0.07, was estimated to be suitable for coating reproducible γ-AlOOH membrane layers with the high specific surface area.

      • 건설현장 근로자들의 안저예방실태와 사고예방과의 개선요인 조사연구

        This study was conducted to examine aspects of health and safety education and demand level of safety education in construction job sites in order to provide direction of safety education development. The subjects of this study were 566 workers who were working in construction job sites located in Daegu City and Kyungbuk Province. Data were collected from June 1, 2002 to August 30, 2002. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. According to safety education by experience methods, the proportion of education by lecture was highest (90.6%). The proportion of education by field practice was 13.1%. 2. Among the education methods which they thought as the most desirable method, the proportion of audio-visual education was 39.4% and the proportion of education by experience was 37.5%. Those who had more monthly income and higher education level preferred audio-visual education, while those who were younger and less educated preferred education by experience. 3. In the case of the contents of the safety education which they thought as the most important one, the proportion of enhancement of safety awareness and education of risk factors was highest (24.7%). The groups of older workers, having longer working period, and belonging to higher education level preferred these contents. 4. According to the factors which were most important to increase effectiveness of the safety education were workers' voluntary participation (27.7%), 40 to 49 years old (27.7%), and monthly income of one million, five hundred thousand won to one million, nine hundred ninety thousand won (32.0%). The proportions of lower educated workers and working as daily workers were also high. 5. The variable which most influenced the safety education was age. The safety awareness of construction job sites was the second highest influential variable. From above results, it is clear that the workers' participation in the safety education was low since most of the safety educations were formal education by lecture. Although they participated in the education, the education was also not effective because they compulsorily participated in it. Therefore, it can be concluded that effective alternative policies must be formulated.

        This study was conducted to examine the effects of Propyl Dihydro Jasmonate on the growth responses, chilling tolerance and yields on the direct seeding on dry paddy at seedling stage in two rice cultivars The emergence rate of two rice cultivars (Seoan byeo and Dasanbyeo) were increased more by the treatment of 0.05μM PDJ than those of others. Higher concentration of PDJ was found to be inhibitory for germination. Number of emergence of cultivar Seoanbyeo was higher in 0.05μM PDJ treatment for 24hour as compared to 12hour, whereas, no significant difference was observed in case of cultivar Dasanbyeo Plant height and number of tillers of two rice cultivars were increased by the treatment of 0.05μM PDJ for 24 hour Rice yield of the tested cultivars were increased high in the PDJ treatment plot due to increment of the panicle number in the dry seesed paddy field.

        Ductile coupled flexural wall is the primary seismic load resisting system of buildings. In these systems, connections are generally headed stud bolt connection. The purpose of experimental study is to evaluate the seismic behavior of these connection under cyclic loading. A comprehensive experimental test involving 4 specimens has been performed and this program is used to study the effect of value of moment and edge distance. Through experimental test, the seismic behavior of typical headed stud bolt connections was established.

        This study was conducted to have basic and applied informations to establish the cultivation method and to improve the cultivation techniques of Angelica gigas Nakai through investigating the rates of germination and seedling establishment with treatment of plant growth regulator and seed priming. The germination rates of round shape seed were about 0.3~12% higher than those of parallel shape. The germination rates with different storage durations were increased at the level of 25oC and 4oC with the storage days, while they were clearly higher at -20oC compared to those at 4oC and 25oC without the storage durations. With the results of germination rates with treating of plant growth regulator and seed priming, their rates with the round shape seeds were comparatively higher about 6% than those with parallel shape seed and they were increased with increasing of the storage durations. The germination rates were generally appeared higher with GA3 than did those with seed priming. The highest germination rate was appeared at 50 ppm GA3 of plant growth regulator and at -0.5 MPa PEG6000 of seed priming. The germination rates?ㅤ ?ㅤ of Angelica gigas were different with different temperature, storage durations and the treatments of plant growth regulator and seed priming. These results could be used according to different cultivating conditions.

      • 유기질비료 시비량에 따른 오미자 묘목의 초기 생육특성에 관한 연구

        This study was carried out to have basic and applied informations to find the optimum nitrogen fertilization level for organic cultivation and to investigate early growth characteristics of Schizandra chinensis Baillon. Different application levels of the organic fertilizer were based on the recommended rate of N fertilizer. Five different levels of the organic fertilizer were applied to S. chinensis and early growth responses such as the length of vine, the diameter of vine, the number of leaves, and the number of branches were investigated. Lengths of main and total vines were shown longer at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer than those at others. The vine length at early growth was the highest at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer among the treatments. Stem diameter was shown thicker level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer than others on August and September, whereas on October it was the thickest in the conventional cultivation. Number of leaf was increased higher at the level of 1.0 and 2.0 times organic fertilizer than that in the compared to conventional. The number of branches was appeared the lowest at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer at early growth, however they were increased through progressing their growth stages. They were not significantly difference among the treatments except for the level of 2.0 times organic fertilizer. Based on the research results, the growth of S. chinensis was commonly higher at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer compared to other treatments.

        Dynamic SOC Compensation of an Ultracapacitor Module for a Hybrid Energy Storage System

        The ultracapacitor module has recently been recast for use in hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs). As a result, accurate state-of-charge (SOC) estimation for an ultracapacitor module is as important as that of primary sources in order to be utilized efficiently in an energy storage system (ESS). However, while SOC estimation via the open-circuit voltage (OCV) method is generally used due to its linear characteristics compared with other ESSs, this method results in many errors in cases of highcurrent charging/discharging within a short time period. Accordingly, this paper introduces a dynamic SOC estimation algorithm that is capable of SOC compensation of an ultracapacitor module even when there is a current input and output. A cycle profile that simulates the operating conditions of a mild-HEV was applied to a vehicle simulator to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

      • Verification of battery system model for environmentally friendly vehicles using a battery hardware-in-the-loop simulation

        <P>Owing to high oil prices and the efforts to reduce greenhouse gases according to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, there has been active research and development on environmentally friendly, high-efficiency vehicles. In developing the system design and specifications of an environmentally friendly vehicle, various simulations have been performed on the different components and the overall system. Although a precise modelling of each part and the system as a whole is necessary for an accurate simulation, detailed modelling of a high-capacity battery system - which directly affects the performance of an environmentally friendly vehicle - is difficult to achieve owing to the non-linear electrochemical properties of the battery. In this study, an electrochemical impedance measurement technique is used to implement a battery cell model, upon which a battery system model for environmentally friendly vehicles that takes into account the ancillary components of the battery pack is developed. And we used an actual battery system that requires complex and difficult modelling owing to non-linear and irreversible properties of the battery. In addition, to verify the developed battery system model, we used models implemented for other vehicle components and systems to construct a hardware-in-the-loop simulation of a battery reflecting an actual driving environment.</P>
